My dad worked at ESI from 1974-1982, and again from 1989-2006, got his degree from OIT.
OIT is a great school. Had a buddy at Tek who graduated from OIT, that's all he could talk about. Witness to a murder at a nightclub there. Had to testify. Last I heard he was the quality control chief engineer for Tek's solid state lab.
My buddy at ESI was Richard Coates, ask you dad if he knew him.

I’m not buying... I bought in Tigard for less than $400k but they kinda don’t like my kind, so I’m leaving.
Don't like your kind? They have all kinds in Tigard, well, maybe not in the old Street of Dreams location. Rick Adelman lives near that Street of Dreams, or at least I think he still does.
Can't be Asian 'cause I know they've got Asians.

I’m transgender.

The name sounds familiar but dad’s gone so I can’t ask him.

I guess I am wealthy. I don't expect to "work" again. Also I always have what I want, often I need to make it to have it.
But then, I really don't have much money.

How do people know enough to show you "they don't like your kind"?

I get called sir even shen I dress like a woman, wear makeup and lipstick, lighten up my voice as best I can, and say my name is [feminine name]... there’s also a lot it long stares and frowns... these don’t happen downtown... downtown they ask me what I’d like to be called, and don’t stare.

I take it from what you say is, you don't look the part you want to play. I was wondering if you are telling them or difference is obvious.

You probably knew my dad.

I worked out at Tek often from about 65 to 70, usually in the computer room or near by offices. I helped the engineers test a new high definition video terminal
they were working on.

I got a terrible vibe out in the Tek computer room one day, probably about 1965. A young fella was there in the computer room that day in a wheel chair, the nephew of the Computer operations manager as I recall. He was quite happy and exuberant to be out and about, noticeable so considering his condition. No arms or legs, only about 19 years old. One of the first to return home from Vietnam in this sort of condition. Everyone was doing their best to help make his day.

The question ran through my head then, God Damn! How many more will come back this way from this fucked up war?

I wonder if anyone knew the decades of needless wars they were in for.

Geez! It became much worst than the vision I had then in 1965. I was aghast at the conjured up incident of the Gulf of Tonkin. As a Fire Controlman
I knew it was no big issue at all. A couple of torpedo boats is simple practice for a well tuned Destroyer and crew. Not a friggin reason to go to war.
Now the SOB that conjured up that crap sure needed to be impeached.

I can think of things more cruel to say to someone like me than what you have just said, but the list is honestly pretty short.

It was not my intent to be cruel in anyway. It simply was a question I got from what you said. I was curious as to why you were having trouble. No intention of causing you more.

Coming from someone who has heard fat comments off and on for almost 40 years I get it but it seems like an honest if not pleasant question.

The person in the Gamestop video that got so angry a few months ago (I think it was Gamestop) unfortunately has to expect that type of reaction. I think I would have called her Ma'am if I interacted with her but honest to God I wouldn't have bet my life if someone asked me for sure what to call her.

I saw this sort of discussion started in the what's wrong with westbrook thread about autism.

It is becoming a very difficult discussion. Reminds me of a story I saw years ago about two deaf parents deciding if their child should get cochlear implants. The parents didn't want the child to think being deaf was wrong. It obviously isn't wrong but it was a no brainer to me. They finally did decide to do it and the kid was happy.

Anyway, I don't want to come off sounding like a total asshole and this probably isn't a discussion we even need to have but this is a topic that always interests me.

On topic, glad you found a place you want to make home. Congrats

As my boss at Boeing used to say when we'd come back from some pretty intensely nasty meetings, "You've gotta have alligator skin."

You probably knew my dad.
When I quit there were about 22,000 employees.
I worked first in assembling 585, 581 and 545 oscilloscopes, then I worked briefly on the loading dock, then I worked in probes, finally working in TM500 first as a technician and then as an engineer. I got to liaise with a number of other engineers and some in assembly and some technicians here and there. Had lunch with Earl Wantland and lunch and dinner with (and I just can't recall his name but he was the executive vice president). I knew a few of the upper managers but not a lot. A lot of fond memories there.

It simple really; I can move somewhere where I’m treated like a human so I did. That’s what this thread was about. Being treated like a citizen is worth moving to a little apartment in NE to me.

I already have alligator skin. If you think I’m being too sensitive it’s because you don’t and honestly can’t know my fight. So... whatever. Thank you for the well wishes.

I'm not being critical of you at all. I consider you a normal human being and I'm certain I would object if I saw you being mistreated as I would speak up whenever I saw anyone being mistreated. I'd only back out if it were some sort of nasty physical fight.

Edit:
One time when I went to the Oktoberfest in Mt. Angel. As I was leaving to go home I saw two bikers in a very nasty fight. They were rolling in the street up against a curb. Each one had a hold of the other one's hair and they were trying to smash their opponent's head on the cement. I got the hell out of there.
