Colomo and de Vries share lead
Spaniard Javi Colomo and Dutchman Floris De Vries share the lead on four under par 67 after the first round of the Mugello Tuscany Open in Italy.
The pair finished one shot clear of Swede Peter Gustafsson, Norway’s Jan-Are Larsen, Portugal’s Ricardo Santos and Austrian Roland Steiner after mastering some tricky conditions on the challenging 7,114 yard, par 71 course at UNA Poggio dei Medici Golf Club, near Florence.
De Vries was bogey-free in his round, picking up three shots on the back nine to add to his solitary birdie on the fifth hole before the turn.
“I’m very happy with that start and I holed some great putts and my short game was very good,” he said. “I made a lot of up and downs to save par and that kept my momentum going.
“I was one under through 12 and nothing was really happening. I birdied 13 then on 15 I was 20 metres from the hole and my putt was flying past but it hit the flag and went in. That was a bit of luck for me then I hit it to two feet on 16 for another birdie to go to four under. I was a bit disappointed not to birdie 18 but it was a good start.”
The 20 year old opened with a 64 in the last event, the ALLIANZ Open Côtes d’Armor Bretagne, before finishing in a share of 17th place but he is determined to keep it going this week following another fine start.

De Vries and Meitinger in Tuscany stalemate
Floris De Vries and Nicolas Meitinger remain locked together at the top of the leaderboard going into the final round of the Mugello Tuscany Open after both carded level par rounds of 71 in Italy.
After matching each other stroke-for-stroke for most of the third round, German Meitinger looked to have edged ahead of the Dutchman when he birdied the 17th hole after De Vries had dropped a shot on the 16th.
However Meitinger lost his ball on the last after pushing his tee shot right into the rough and could only make bogey, while De Vries took advantage of that rare slip by birdieing the 18th to draw level on seven under par 206.
The pair, who had held two stroke overnight lead, are one clear of Sweden’s Joel Sjöholm, who shot a two under par 69 at UNA Poggio dei Medici Golf Club.

Floris De Vries Wins Title
Floris De Vries fought back from a nervous ending to his final round to defeat Denmark’s Thorbjorn Olesen in a play-off after a dramatic conclusion to the Mugello Tuscany Open.
Dutchman De Vries had appeared to be coasting to victory when he opened up a commanding three stroke lead over the field, reaching the 15th hole four under par for his round, but the Dutchman bogeyed both the 16th and 17th holes at UNA Poggio dei Medici Golf Club to fall a stroke behind Olesen, who led in the clubhouse after a superb seven under par 64.
Remarkably though, De Vries gathered his thoughts before hitting the “best shot” of his short career – a superb three wood from 239 yards to six feet - on the last hole to set up an eagle chance. However he pushed his putt agonisingly past the hole and had to settle for par and a place in the play-off after the pair tied on ten under par 275.
