Multnomah County residents who moved away took more than $1 billion in income with them during the first year of the pandemic, as remote work allowed people to keep jobs in cities but live anywhere.

That’s according to The Oregonian/OregonLive’s analysis of data released by the Internal Revenue Service. Numbers gleaned from annual income tax returns provide the most detailed information available on where Americans are moving — and taking their money.

Multnomah county lost the highest % of residents, a net loss of 2.5%. Portland is one of the fastest declining cities in the nation. Neighboring Washington and Clackamas county have grown slightly.

I wonder why people are fleeing Multnomah county? I think it's because they hate trees and waterfalls.

Space. During a pandemic, you want more space of your own. You don't want to be in crowded places (because that's how you get sick).

Clackamas and Washington Counties have a LOT more space than Multnomah County.

More space for parking, so less need to be in crowded busses or Max, larger sidewalks and roads, etc...
