Federer, Nadal on Madrid Collision Course

Roger Federer could meet Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals of the Mutua Madrid Open as the Swiss star continues his return to the ATP World Tour. Nadal also will have a bigger task on his mind in Madrid: Fighting off World No. 1 Novak Djokovic to become the outright ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title leader with 29 championships.

Johanna Konta pulls out of the Mutua Madrid Open with illness

Britain’s top seeded WTA player, Johanna Konta, has withdrawn from the Mutua Madrid Open as a result of a respiratory illness.

The Australian-born competitor was trailing 6-4, 2-1 to Caroline Garcia of France at the time, but would inform the umpire that she would be unable to continue.

Federer Withdraws From Madrid

Roger Federer has withdrawn from the Mutua Madrid Open because of a back injury, the World No. 3 announced on Monday. The Swiss was scheduled to play on Wednesday in just his second tournament back since undergoing knee surgery in February.

“Sorry to the tournament for coming and leaving without playing,” Federer said. “I arrived and I was okay, and then I practised on Saturday and hurt my back a little bit in practice and then stopped early.”

Cuevas Outlasts Monfils, Fights Into Third Round

Pablo Cuevas produced tough clay-court tennis on Wednesday to outlast Gael Monfils and achieve his best result at the Mutua Madrid Open. The World No. 27 beat the confident Monfils 6-7(5), 6-3, 7-6(4) in two hours and 29 minutes to move into the third round. Cuevas, whose previous best result in Madrid was a second-round showing, will face Australian Nick Kyrgios, who beat Stan Wawrinka earlier Wednesday.

NICK Kyrgios’ Madrid Open campaign is over after he fell to a three-set 6-7 (8-6) 7-6 (7-1) 6-3 loss to world No.6 Kei Nishikori in a high-quality quarter-final clash.

In the women’s draw, world No.7 Simona Halep reached her first final of the season in comprehensive fashion with a 6-2 6-0 thrashing of Stosur.
