Nice collection. I used to collect cards until I got into high school. It was a fun hobby, but got expensive and I started getting shit faced drunk and talking smack on message boards instead. It was right about the time game used cards were coming out so I have quite a few of those. I collected mainly baseball. My whole closet is full of boxes and binders full of baseball, basketball and football cards.

Before going to the military, I was doing card shows and supplying card shops with cheap inserts. Donruss not putting trademarks or a different air hole pattern on packs that had Elite cards in 1992 paid alot of bills. I sold a handfull of them for $2k at the 1993 Chicago National. Put all of the sets together a few years ago for just under $1k.

I still collect, but have to be smart about it. Will buy lots off Ebay or Craigslist if I can keep a few cards, then sell the others to get my money back. CheckoutmyCards.com has also been nice since I can by multiple cards from different dealers and only pay one shipping charge.

BTW, anyone have football cards out of the Montana rookie year, 2007-08 Stadium Club, or 1991 and 1992 Pro Line Autographs?

You really have to be careful. Just about everything is supposedly limited. I do not have one nickel of my kids college money invested in cards.

I have only gotten a few autographs in person and most were at spring training baseball. Very few on cards since signed baseballs are alot nicer to show. The cards you buy are supposedly authenticated by the card companies. I would not be surprised if you have signed a few of them.

The 2008 autographed HCP card is one of the best in my S2 collection. Well, that and the BenDavis503 with the FAMS signature.

What I was referring to was players using ghost signers. Companies used to give the player the cards it wanted autographed and then get them back at a later date. It was rumored that the player would then have anyone they knew help them sign. Some of the Pro Line autographs are said to be machine stamped.

It is now very common for then to have the player sign on a piece of tape during one session where they make sure it is him. They then put the sticker on the card at a later date.

All mine come direct from the card companies. The exquisite label, which is what all my Brandon Roy cards are, are the most expensive. They cost around $700 per box, and each box contains only 5 cards. VERY high end product. But you can pull cards out that sell for upwards of $15K, so some think its worth the risk. Others, like me, just enjoy it as a hobby. Ive bought most of my singles from either ebay or card sites.

Well, exquisite cards are all hand signed cards from the player, hence why they charge the price, and hence why they are the only cards I collect. You get a Jordan, Kobe, Lebron, Bill Russell etc auto and its worth big bucks. Upper deck gets the player in for a signing date, or sends the cards out to that player with a UD representative to be signed. That date is then recorded with UD, so they are all authentic.

Probably should learn facts before accusing.

As far as if the appreciate in value, my answer would be hell no. If you collect cards for "investment" purposes, you really should go and talk to an accountant and sort out some better places to stash your money. If you collect just for a hobby, treat it as no different to someone who tinkers with cars or collects stamps or coins, then it remains just that, a side hobby.

No where in my statement do I say that your Exquisite cards are fake. I was commenting on the fact that I have many cards that are supposedly authentic because they come from packs. HCP has ties with the Blazers and it would come as no surprise if he were a ghost signer.

I don't buy the ghost signer thing. Players have contracts with different card companies. I've heard representatives are there when they sign.

Apologies, given the thread was about my collection, after reading "You probably signed a few of them yourself", I took that as meaning me.

Its just Ive been in and out of the hobby for 18 years or so, and the biggest blight on it is frauds doing it themselves, then listing it on ebay as an "EXCLUSIVE ONE OF A KIND!!!!" 9 out of 10 of them are SO obviously fake, but every now and then someone will get done. Ticks me off.

Not really. It ruins the value of the card for the most part and does not look as nice. Of the autographs I have gotten in person, only a couple were not acting like they would rather be doing anything else. Curt Schilling was by far the biggest asshole.

Surprisingly, Paul Allen was quiet but very cool.

in regards to the above point, yes. some people do get things signed in person - but as not everyone lives IN portland or another city that has an NBA team there really isn't a good plan B floating around. Some stars do sign mailed cards and return them though. if you are planning to keep as a part of a personal collection the cards signed in person are cool as hell, but in the 'market' they aren't really given any credit at all - comes down to authenticity, proof, non-endorsed etc
