What’s going on with Greg Oden?

Portland’s 7-foot center continues with his recovery program following November 2010 microfracture surgery to his left knee.

Why he isn’t back by now remains a mystery.

When I approached the No. 1 pick in the 2007 draft in the locker room before Sunday night’s game with Cleveland at the Rose Garden, he told me, “I’m still not talking about it right now.”

Wow could you imagine us trading our pick to Chicago for Deng and Noah? During that time, I bet Chicago does it in a heartbeat.

He's done with us, we're done with him. All parties are in agreement, time to move on.

Wow, is Eggers trying to channel Dwight Jaynes circa 1999? What a bitter, venom filled article. Eggers seems to have taken Oden's "no comment" stance personally.

Why else take so many digs at Oden:

Calls him a "would-b player"

The inevitable Sam Bowie reference

follwed by snarky "Other than that, the dude has been pretty healthy" comment

and "On July 1, Oden walks (surely he won’t run) into unrestricted free agency."

I used to like Eggers. Now, I think he's a douche.

TO be perfectly honest, I think he is expressing what many fans think. It really seems Brass is just allowing Oden to come back when he feels ready; just to walk this offseason. I think his "homer" is getting the better of him.

And to be perfectly honest, if Oden does walk this summer; I will put him on my "Most hated list". His choice, I know; but fuck him if he thinks he can grab millions from this organization, only to play on some other team.

If the Blazers had no interest in re-signing him, why pay him anything this year? If he failed his physical, it seems to me that they could have said goodbye and saved a bit of money. It seems more likely that they figure it's worth the investment in order to be in the driver's seat with Bird Rights should Greg be able to show by the end of the season that he's worth a good sized contract next year.

Mags said he's betting anyone and giving 4:1 odds that Oden will play at least one minute in a game as a member of the Blazers before this season concludes.

I've moved on and just don't give a shit anymore about Greg or his playing here - good riddance!

No the homer in me wouldn't allow me to.

It's really simple......

If Greg wanted to be here... he'd grab a little air time which they'd give him in a heartbeat and would say something like....

"I'm working hard to get back soon, want to make sure I come back healthy and can't wait to be a Blazer for many years to come, I owe it to the fans, Paul Allen and everyone who's made me a millionaire for doing not much as of yet. I want to repay all the kindness with a championship trophy here in Portland!"

What you hear is Crickets!!! This guy is gone! I'm surprised they let him sit on the bench anymore....

Do playoffs count as "this season?"

Ding-dong, the witch is gone!

Yeesh.

WORD! I'm so over Oden as of now, doesn't matter what happens next in his career. I used to pay attention to him on the bench for body language and the ever so slight appearance of a limp. I would obsesse about "what could be". Honestly, i haven't looked twice in his direction all year.

Good luck in future endeavors, but seriously It's become time for him to move on. Time for thefranchise to get over that 7 foot question mark and rain cloud that seems to constantly hover over the top of his head.

My thought on Greg is this.... he's got the opportunity to do the right thing with Ptown and be the star we wasted a #1 draft pick on. If he gets healthy and contributes all will be forgotton. However if he bolts after taking 20+ million of this franchise and plays somewhere else? What can someone say about a man like that? I'm sure we all have our own list of colorful adjectives.....

The Blazers may be shutting him up. This all might be beyond his control.

Without a doubt. Which leads to Kerry Eggers frustration with the organization and a recap article about what's been recapped a gazillion times.

Yeah I'm for Oden needing to prove himself before we accept him. Obviously our fans and Brass have proven that we've been supporting him through this process.

If Oden goes to another team and suddenly proclaims "it's a miracle...I can play basketball again" - then what will you say?

Simple, I'll then quit believing in The Wizard Of Oz.

Unfortunately the Blazers Brass aren't buying season tickets and 10 dollar beers at the game. Our #1 draft pick and franchise player has been a no show for 4 years.... and the blazer organization has taken a role of handling the season ticket holders with false hope and avoidance techniques... They had Blazer fans believing B Roy would be back this year and have dangled Oden like saviour for how many years now? Come on already, a little honesty would be nice!

Lose lose for oden here. He comes put and talks to the media they will find a way to negatively spin it, if he doesnt the media still finds a way to negatively spin it.
I dont think oden was supposed to be cleared to play tell the end of january. Well thats what they said after the surgery anyhow.

Eggers is one of the most fair minded and even-handed journos that cover the Portland market ... and there's nothing in his article that dissuades me from that point of view after reading this story.

Yeah I actually am more concerned knowing he wrote this article than a Quick or Cansuckoff. Maybe there really is some truth to this crap. Kinda depressing, coming from the source, IMO.

I know there are plenty of people that will hold it against him, but it's not like he chose to get hurt and it's not as though anybody but Paul Allen will have actually lost anything tangible -- It's his 20+ million after all, not the fans'.

About all I can and will say if he chooses to play elsewhere (or retires and becomes a dentist) is "good luck."

The only "truth" that Eggers talks about is that Oden is being very quiet about his status and that the team isn't talking ... it's a little odd.
