I was thinking of this while watching the NFL Draft today. You have guys like JaMarcus Russell, LaRon Landry, Marshawn Lynch, LaMaar Woodley, and others. In the NBA you have Lebron James, Amare Stoudemire, Udonis Haslem, etc. Why is it that some black people seem to have odd names such as above? I rarely see someone with a different racial makeup have a name like that. I've never ever seen a white person named LaKeesha.Again, I'm not trying to be racist or stereotypical, but it's something I've noticed. I have a feeling Gentile will have the answer for me.

There are a lot of black women who make up names for their children, and the famous people with made up names have more people named after them.Same in the Jewish community, hence me being named Maclen, which is a previously unheard of name outside 18th century ireland and indonesia.

I think you should focus your attention on celebrity baby names instead, if you want odd.Honestly, I don't see anything wrong with names by the black community. They are mostly derived from their culture just like the names you see from the asian community. Also, from the white culture. But since your white, you think it's not odd. To them, our names are probably weird.

But why make up a name? Why not just name them Marcus instead of JaMarcus, or Ron rather than LaRon, or Shawn instead of Marshawn? Is it to make it sound more African?I don't see anything wrong with it, I don't care what someone wants to name their kid, but I'm wondering why there is a pattern in the black community with compound/different names. That's what I'm wondering.

But if you want a straight up answer, most likely the parents want their kid to have a distinguishable and creative name.

Why is that prevalent in the black community though? Is it to separate themselves from white names? To try and sound more African? Or are they just more creative than white people. That's what I'm trying to figure out. Bill Cosby feels the same way.

White people tend to think that naming their kids something like that would be less educated. I don't know what black people are thinking, but they must be thinking something.

sorry for the typos, but its currently 1:55 AM and revising really isn't on my mind right nowwell one thing I know for sure, names like, lebron, marshawn and antawn, are made up to be more creative then white people or to sound more african, if you dont belive me say amobi okoye, then say antawn jamison and see if it sounds similiar just a little bit, nd if you say it does you will be lying to your self, now as for the issue of trying to br "more creative then white people" I highly doubt, that after a mother has child after 9 months of labor, and a father just cheated having a heart attack and has adreniline still pumping through his veins from going 80 in 35 trying to get the hospitol, are thinking, lets make sure our childs name is more creative then other white kids. most "creative names are combo of two name which happen for two main reasons. one the parents want to name their child after two people, like jamal and marcus make jamarcus, or Mark and Shawn make marshawn, and lauren and keisha, make lakeisha, that way you can please grandparents on both side of the familly. now the 2nd reason is because of bad guessing, meening you thought you were getting a boy and you had a name for your unborn son, but he came out to be your daughter, so thats how names like shawnice, donicka, and karold come about. now for the rest of them like lebron, udonis, and amare, they sound weird, because their either, from another language, from the bible, or have a deeper meening, for instance, im nigerian, and my name is olugbnega, my friend has a french name, jourdan, and she gets pretty pissed when people spell it like jordan, my nephew is name mathius or somthing like that, well you get what im saying, the names were made for many reason, and as a result, their creative, and make a person stand out and more distinguishable as a result, and trust me, names that seem normal to you, in other parts of the world they are viewed as weird.

another interesting thing prevalent in the black community is naming their kids preppy rich kid names like "Chauncey", "Judge", etc.

Another thing I cannot understand is how people misspell names. I mean, I know you technically have free range to spell a name whatever and call a kid whatever, but realistically Dwyane Wade's parents did not intend to shout DEE-WHY-ANE everyday.

Actually with a name like Dwyane or Dwayne it doesn't really matter on spelling that much the y is not needed actually say window pane the wayne the y doesn't make a difference.I don't really find it different, well I guess it's since I lived in a black neighborhood and I'm black really, its only weird when I have to talk to theese twins called LaNeighsha and LeNeeshia.

I'm still wondering why this mostly only happens in the black community.I don't see any LaChing Lee's out there.Or JaCarlos Rodriguez's either.

Winchester is asking a question, wondering why black people make unique names. Get off his back.

I know lots of black people with common names too. Some people just wan some individuality. Caucasion people and Hispanic people and all kinds of people have individual different names too. They just don't start with a La or something like that. They have other effects on them. THe point is this is not really a racial idea, it's more of just a thing where people want to distinguish their kids.

Thank god we have PFF to say what everyone else in this thread has basicly said.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Bohemian @ Apr 29 2007, 06:24 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'>you say this like their aren't any rich and preppy black people?</div>There are rich and preppy black people, they're not the ones being named Chauncey and Chadrick for the most part. Since it's a less prevalent demographic there's no point in mentioning it.And btw, just to add more fuel to this conversation, statistically speaking, black kids with creative names are a lot less likely to be economically successful. It's mostly teenage mothers who have kids who name them creative names like that.

T-time is a perfectly good example of a black person with a completely normal name.

My computer access has been limited due to my mother's timely, yet unfortunate demise. My take on this is that in a world where black people control so very little, we go just about crazy with what we can control. Who wants to fit in with this American blandness (great word, whoever used it first in this thread)? You might as well ask, "Why invent rock, jazz, hip-hop, graffiti, or breakdancing?" We need some color to rebuild this drabness we live in. We seem to prize originality and beauty over regimentation.
