NEW YORK (AP) — Hip-hop artist Nas is protesting Fox News's coverage of Barack Obama.

The rapper joined members of the activist groups MoveOn.org and ColorofChange.org to deliver more than 600,000 petitions Wednesday to the network's New York City headquarters.

Nas, whose new album Untitled was released last week, said in a statement that "Fox poisons the country with racist propaganda and tries to call it news."

The network responded by saying, "Fox News believes in all protesters exercising their right to free speech including Nas who has an album to promote." Fox also noted that its anchor Bill Hemmer was scheduled to interview Obama this weekend.

Last month, Fox News referred in a graphic to Michelle Obama, the wife of the Democratic presidential candidate, as "Obama's baby mama." Later, the network said a producer "exercised poor judgment" during the segment.

Earlier, two other Fox personalities apologized for referring to an affectionate onstage fist bump shared by the couple as a "terrorist fist jab" and, in another case, for joking about an Obama assassination.

Nas' new song, Sly Fox, takes direct aim at Fox. "Watch what you watchin', Fox keeps feeding us toxins ... I pledge allegiance to the fair and balanced truth, not the biased truth, not the liar's truth," the song says.

MoveOn.org, a liberal public advocacy group, and ColorofChange.org, an online group of black activists, said the petition signatures were gathered online in the past month.

Andre Banks, a spokesman for ColorofChange.org, said that after Fox refused to take the petitions Wednesday afternoon, Nas took them to Comedy Central's The Colbert Report. Fox couldn't immediately say whether security guards at their midtown building accepted the petitions.

[sarcasm] Nas is a true patriot for going after the right wing Fox Noise channel. Bill O'Reilly's such a racist even though he's had Jesse Jackson, Rev. Al, Malik Shabazz, Juan Williams, Cam'ron, Dame Dash, and DJ Star on his show.

All hail Nas [/sarcasm]

O'Reilly's a douche bag. And yeah, he is racist. Buncha bitches.

Plus, he argues like a big baby.

If he gets mad, he comes outta nowhere and starts screaming at people on his show.

Admitted trangressions. What more do you need? Kissing someones ass in one show doesn't negate other behavior.

He's horrible. As soon as someone comes with a rebuttle, he just cuts them off in mid-sentence, interrupting their whole reply, and talking loudly over them like a child. He makes sure that you hear what HE has to say.

Pegs Bill O'Reilly gets angry because he has a temper. I sympathize, because I'm Irish and I have it too.

He also gets angry because while he can take the easy route out and not invite people he disagrees with, but he invites people who don't share his views on and they piss him off.

This stuff happens all the time in the media David Shuster with the "pimping Chelsea Clinton," Chris Matthews and what he says, Olbermann and what he says, Lou Dobbs, Don Imus etc. Nobody should condone that, and I'm not condoning that.

By doing this Nas has become a partisan hack. He's no better than anyone on Fox News simply because he promotes a progressive agenda.

Wow, for someone with the name 'Real' that is some of the most fake stuff I have read in a long time. I'm not sure which part you were being saracastic about, obviously you don't like Nas. But are are you seriously trying to argue that O'Reilly isn't racist just because he had black people on his show? Are you aware of how much racism, for example, NBA players hear from fans during a game? People will pay to see AI, and then shout racial slurs during the game, just because they are at the game doens't mean they aren't racist.

Same thing with Billy O. There is no excuse to get mad at someone for having an opinion different than yours and then yell at them. That's ignorance, don't try to use that excuse that you can relate because you have the same Irish temper he has, sad. I never realize that things like racism, one's temper, etc were genetic.

Nas did nothing wrong, he just happens to be the frontman for something that should have happened a long time ago. For Billy to refer to the MoveOn group as a modern day KKK is downright disrespectful, and no, him being Irish doesn't make it okay

I could go on

Where's the beef? (Not TheBeef). Seriously. The clip looks to me like they're grilling this awful woman about how bad it is to say this kind of thing about Obama's wife.

Having Jackson, Sharpton, or most of those dudes on his program doesn't indicate a lack of racism. It just shows that he wants a token black foil against which he can make broad, unwarranted generalizations.

CNN LIVE EVENT/SPECIAL

America Votes 2004

Aired November 2, 2004 - 22:00 ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

WOLF BLITZER, HOST: 10:00 p.m. on the East Coast and we can project, as expected, no great surprise, Utah and its five electoral votes going for the president of the United States. This has been widely expected.

...

BLITZER: We'll dip in and listen to Barack Obama once he eventually gets to that stage.

WATSON: Eventually.

BLITZER: Barack Obama, a lot of Democrats have a lot of hope in this young man.

GREENFIELD: Well, I must say that, you know, in an era when conventions are scripted to the nines and you go to conventions because you sort of have to go, every once in a while somebody gets up and does something that absolutely blows the place apart.

And I think when Obama began to speak the sign for me of a really great speaker, as a retired speech writer, is not when people jump up and yell. They always do that. They'll jump up and yell for the phone book. When he quieted the crowd down as he told his story and the story of America this guy is a compelling figure.

BLITZER: Was he the first president of the Harvard Law Review?

WATSON: First African American president of the Harvard Law Review.

BLITZER: That's what I meant.

KING: He's made it. I think he's coming.

WATSON: He's coming up.

BLITZER: We can take a look. Maybe he will and maybe he won't but she looks like she's about to introduce him. Let's listen in.

MICHELLE OBAMA, WIFE OF BARACK OBAMA: My baby's daddy Barack Obama. Yeah!

BARACK OBAMA, SENATOR-ELECT, ILLINOIS: Thank you, Illinois. Thank you. Thank you, Illinois. I don't know about you but I'm still fired up. I am fired up. Look at this crowd. Thank you, Illinois.

Thank you Chutney, I'm glad that someone else gets it. Besides, Real if you saw the show with Cam'ron and Dame Dash, that was O'reilly attacking hip hop. The funny thing about that one is that he (Bill) brought in another black guy on the show (a high school principal) as well to question Dash and Cam'ron, that way he washed his hands of it.

I find it funny, sad actually, that Fox News dismisses Nas as someone who has an album to promote. This isn't some Janet Jackson ish, this is real. Nas sells regardless, but I'm sure Fox News didn't know that.

I think Bill'O has said some off-color things, at the same time Nas is getting carried away.

I don't care about his show but to me it seems like both "sides" here are wrong.

Exactly. Like FOX News is where musicains' careers are born or enhanced. They have an inflated opinion of themselves, and its clearly a diversion from the real point.

Nas is being a political hack, no question there. There are a lot of folks that can be accused of that from all sides of the issues.

We can accuse FOX as having a "regressive" agenda.

I think it is quite important to watch all the News Channels (as well as do a bit of reading online at least). In most cases hearing a retort on an issue is the only way to come to a reasonable conclusion.

Like I said, he could take the Keith Olbermann route and just create a place where O'Reilly only has Republicans and Conservatives on his show, and they just compliment each other on being "great Americans."

It's ridiculous for Nas to say that Fox News more or less limits the marketplace of ideas when he's affiliated with MoveOn.org no?

Not once?

I did some digging.

E.D. Hill made the terrorist fist jab comment, apologized for it, and has not been seen on the air since (that I know of).

Contributor (not a staff person) Liz Trotta made a bad joke when Hillary brought up RFK's assassination while she was still in the race (it happened to RFK, it could happen to Obama is what she was accused of, remember?). She apologized on-air the next day, and has not appeared on Fox since.

People have mistakenly called Obama "Osama" and it's not all been people from Fox News or the republican side. MSNBC, one of Obama's unpaid press agencies, once showed a picture of Osama while Chris Matthews was talking about Obama. There are several similar instances on CNN, too.

What is clear is there's a ridiculous amount of scrutiny into these things these days; one gaffe by a politician along these lines and you go from being one of the favorites for presidential nominee to being the guy who fucked himself by saying "macaca."

I believe these on-air people and producers of the 24/7 cable news networks have to fill all those hours and are bound to make a mistake once in a while. While trying to be cute.

Anyone remember David Schuster of MSNBC, who I think is a fine reporter, was suspended for 2 weeks by NBC for saying the Clinton campaign was "pimping out" Chelsea Clinton?
