Who should coach Portland in 2023/24?

  • Chauncey - still don't know if he is 'good' or 'bad' given the circumstances of the last 2 years

  • Monty - bring him back to where he started his coaching career

  • 'Bud' - sure he won with Giannis, but he was really good in Atlanta which is quite rare.

  • Nurse - shorter resume' than most, but still won a title with a unreliable Kawhi.

  • Vogel - won in Indiana.....not easy to do.

  • D'Antoni - still has some gas left in the tank.

  • Other

Well Mark Jackson couldn't figure it out. Kerr made some key changes to take that group from good to great like the small ball unit that absolutely blasted teams to close games.

Mark Jackson couldn't coach a preschool basketball team. Kerr is better than Jackson, but that's not saying much. We saw once Kerr was without one of his two star guards for a year, things didn't go to well.

He was better than Mark Jackson, which I think might not be that high a bar to cross. Speaking of which, how is Mark Jackson a candidate for Milwaukee?

Yeah, not a high bar to clear at all. Jackson won't get that job. Probably Monty Or Nick.

I would at least hire one of these guys to sit down and watch game tape of every Portland game and come up with some conclusions on things to do differently and then talk with Billups.

They hired some consultant to do that for Stotts. They let him go after just a few weeks. I'm guessing the coaching staff didn't want to hear about how bad the defense was and how ISO oriented the offense was.

Are we talking about Stotts or Billups?

I’m not against Billups as the Blazers’ coach next season. Monty Williams has some grit and dignity. I heard him speak in person months ago, and I’d like him as a Blazers head coach next year. Treat Billups well if the change is going to be made.

What does Mikal Bridges think of him? Make it a two-fer.

Yep.

Mass exodus in Philly.
If there is a max exodus in Philly and we get the first pick, maybe we acquire Embiid and probably move Ant to a third team and Nurk to the Sixers along with Wemby. That puts us with Dame, Embiid, Grant, Sharpe and a hole at the other forward spot that we would try to fill with our draft assets and TPE or the TPMLE. I don't see the Sixers trading the reigning MVP but if they did Wemby would go a long way towards it. I think they would stick with Joel, trade Harden in a S&T for someone they see as more complementary to Embiid and Maxey.. and go forward from there with or without Dox.

We should try to get Tucker too.

Doc is most definitely gone. Harden is out the door. I could see them sign and trading with Houston netting some youth and picks.

Embiid may want out and ask for a trade. If he wants to play badly enough with Dame, he could ask out and the Blazers could make a move.

Yeah if we are giving them the next LeBron (meaning guy who changes the entire game) along with Nurk and whatever a third team returns for Ant we should get more back than just Embiid even if he's the reigning MVP. I don't know if I'd actually want tucker but the return of Wemby, Ant and Nurk might be more than even the MVP.

So from reading this thread you would think Billups was on the hot seat?
I am not reading that anywhere else? Chauncey Billups is the Blazers coach and that isn’t changing is it?

I don't think anyone is suggesting Chauncey is on the hot seat. However, by comparison of coaches who have been highly successful or achieved the ultimate success, it could be suggested it is quite the ironic comparison to keep coaches like Stotts who produced very average results for so long and also keep Chauncey with his abysmal (albeit made worse by tanking directives from above) record. Dame wants a veteran roster, but is okay with a rookie coach.

I think Portland fans, while they would like a championship, are at the least looking for a direction of improvement. That hasn't existed for a LONG time.

I think it would be ideal from a Portland standpoint if Monty took the year off. Firing Chauncey right now might not sit well with the players since he has essentially had one hand tied behind his back while he was forced to tank at the end of both seasons. Give him one more year. (or at least to the all-star break)

Sources tell me Monty Williams is expected to take time to himself after his shocking ouster from Phoenix, which The Athletic first reported Saturday evening. But his services will have significant interest.

I think I would also. He's getting paid anyway. Maybe he was the problem but it sure seems like he was the fall guy in that situation.

Billups. Dame and Grant want him, as well as pull to potentially bring in another star. Blazers need to add veteran talent before a head coaches ability to win matters.

If we instead rebuild then Billups has been good developing Sharpe, Ant, and other youth. It's only been two years that Billups has been coach, and he's had shit rosters.

I think it helps to stick with a coach for multiple season, it also makes the position more desirable for the other great coaches if we eventually decide to pivot to a different direction. Maybe that time to pivot happens in the next few years, but it's not now.

Adjustments are adjustments, or lack there of. How many double digit leads did we blow this year….16? 17? THAT is on coaching
Thats what happens in today's NBA when you depend on the 3 ball a lot and aren't very talented. It's not the coaches.

While I generally think the never-ending coaching debate is silly as it's mostly about the talent, Kerr is the type of quality person/smart guy I'd love to lead the Blazers. Living in the Bay Area, I hear him on local sports talk regularly and think he's about as good as it gets. Local reports on his predecessor Jackson's firing relayed that he was extremely religious leading long daily prayer groups which everyone was expected to attend, and that of course not every W's player was into that.

Ok then, Chauncey is a great in game coach
you sir, have absolutely & completely failed at understanding/characterizing what I've written in this and prior posts. So sorry, I wish you better luck next time

Seems you just like arguing? I just wanna get through another day. We are on completely different timelines

Like arguing? Not really. I made my point about generally not placing that much value on coaching (it's mostly the talent who win/lose) which you mangled to mean that I think Chauncey is a great game day coach. Intentional or not, it seems you are the one going out of their way to have a dispute.

I hope today is a beauty that we all remember for the rest of our timelines
