NBA Draft picks thread (MERGED)

The Blazers will regret passing on DeJuan Blair twice in the 2nd round this year, just like they came to regret passing on Paul Millsap at 30, 31 and 45 in 2006. What makes it worse, is he went to San Antonio. The Spurs don't draft dumb. They know value when they see it, and Blair will be an important role player for them.

I'm very disappointed in this draft. I can't see anything we've done to address any of our needs. We drafted a European tweener who is years away from being NBA ready, got a third string center and an undersized, weak rebounding "power" forward. I can't see any of these guys contributing anything to the team in the coming season - if any of them even make the team (which is doubtful).

How do you know that if the Spurs were in Portland's position they wouldn't do the same? Maybe the Spurs had Pendergraph and Cunningham rated higher than Blair, given health issues.

Lee who? Lee Majors? Hey, I'd take the 6 Million Dollar Man over anyone we drafted. And, at $6 million, a guy who can run and jump like that and see into the other team's huddle would be a bargain in today's NBA.

And who's our 3rd sting PG now? What if Blake gets injured? I'd rather have Blake/Bayless/Sergio than Blake/Bayless/Mills as out PG rotation.

Of course, I'm hoping this means there will be a trade or free agent signing that will bring us back on upgrade at PG.

One would guess this makes sense. With so many point guards taken in the draft - there will be some that will be at least as good as Sergio available. Heck - with Minni taking about 62 of them - maybe we can bring Bassy to backup the backup before Mills...

Blair had a WS/40 of 21.8. Pendergraph had a WS/40 of 13.4. And Blair put up his stats in a tougher conference. Blair is younger and better.

Concerning the health issues - in two years at Pitt Blair never missed a single game, or a single practice. How unhealthy can he be? He would have filled a need and I'm disappointed we passed on him multiple times in the 2nd round - and that he will make the Spurs better.

Valid points for sure, the trouble is that with a couple of balky knees it's not what happens this year or next, it's 3 years, 4 years, 5 years into his career. Can he hold up? I'm not so sure.

You don't have to point out the stats to me. I know them well. Prior to tonight I rated Blair very high, and higher than the two 4s we drafted. There's two things I hadn't considered though, that I'm glad our managers did. That's defense and longevity.

What if our medical doctors found something very troubling with his knees? Something that would lead them to believe that his career would not be a long one.

Or, what if they didn't care for his character, personality? These are trivial things to some, but have been reasons why Portland has been successful. Do you think these types of "details" aren't important?

Who knows in the end what the reasons are. I'm sure though that their are reasons why they decided against Blair.

He has skills that will be needed next year. Super fast. He can hit the 3. He can get to the rim. You just want to ignore this? He's not perfect. Then again, he's being selected in the second round. Maybe he won't amount to anything more than Taureen Green. I don't believe this to be true, but maybe. Or, he could be a second round streal. Either way, it's a low risk/moderate reward type move. Pretty smart to me.
