NBA to seed conference playoff teams by record

no point in having divisions at all anymore. Just east and west.

Not much point in conferences either. If they want to play within the region more, fine, but seed the whole damn NBA. The NBA plucked out a sliver but left a plank in their eye. The big problem is crappy eastern teams getting into the playoffs while good western teams sit out. Fucking morons.

Why have a regular season at all? Just have a tournament to choose the champ.

The regular season is silly, in terms of the goal to reaching the championship. It only filters out the worst of the worst, and seeding and home court don't mean crap.

And also, the shot clock should reset to 14 instead of 24 after an offensive rebound.

I like this a lot. Somewhat out of place in this thread, but I still agree.

Why have playoffs? Why not have only one team. Then have a big ceremony and give them a trophy.

Also, the team should have only 1 player, not 15.

We can definitely simplify the NBA.

Exactly.

Conferences do make sense because they minimize coast to coast travel, and affect the schedule.

Getting rid of divisions will still leave eastern conf teams with losing records in the playoffs..it really just allows all the Texas teams to get higher seeds in the west

Better yet - let's contract the league! Delete 2-4 teams. CHA and ORL would be the top two to delete. Then move NOP to the ECF.

He didn't offer to abolish the conferences altogether, just for the playoffs and it makes perfect sense.
So teams travel more for 1-3 weeks, so what? it's not like we're still in the 50's and the players have to travel on buses.

Eastern conference teams making the playoffs with poor records sucks. The whole point of the regular season is to eliminate scrub teams in order for the playoffs to be as competitive as possible.

Every NFL game is a huge event, because every game is so meaningful. There are only 16 games in a season, and only 12 playoff spots, and the top 4 teams get a first round bye. Compare than to 16 teams, no byes, and 7 game series. Also, in the NFL, home field advantage means more, because there is a tangible advantage to the noise factor.

If I were to re-design the NBA, I'd play 50 games, and have the top 12 teams make the playoffs with 4 byes. Seeding would go regardless of division or conference.

^David Stern missed that train in the 90's imo. Now players think they deserve billions of dollars.

I know when I travel to the east coast, the time zone difference is a bitch. I'm trying to sleep at 5PM my time and waking up at 3AM to be on their schedule.

First, the Blazers should have been declared the NW division champions every season since the Sonics moved to OK. The Blazers are the only true NW team. The division concept has been distorted to the point of being faulty.

Second, the change to seed the Conference playoffs by record is needed by looking into the future, not the past. A case can be made that the Pacific and SW divisions are stronger this season than last, and the NW division is weaker. The owners have a right to be concerned about the shift in power teams. The talent between the divisions is not balanced.

The only NW division team projected to be above .500 this season is the Thunder, and that is if they stay healthy. It is possible (put not probable) that the next NW division champion wins less than 40 games, and would have been the #4 seed in the conference playoffs.

So what? When conferences are so unbalanced, the bad conference gets the benefit of playing weaker competition AND getting into the playoffs with below .500 records. At least this would even that out in one respect. They could still slant the scheduling so that teams play more often closer to home.
