My Ipod is filled with a bunch of all old songs. Need something fresh.

Maybe some rock? Not rap, unless it's some catchy song or whatever.

what type of rock in particular? what are some of your favorite bands?
I'm a big time music lover...I have around 1,300 cds. one of these days I'll get an ipod...

Just throw anything out. The only band I listen to consistently is RHCP.

You want something "fresh," like a modern band, or like older bands you've never heard of?

I've been getting into a lot of jam music lately and could recommend some new bands from that scene, but that's more of the type of music you want to see live. Outside of that, the only real music I'm up to date on is rap/hip-hop that I hear in bars, clubs, parties, and stuff.

I've also re-discovered a lot of old music recently, like A Tribe Called Quest, Bob Dylan, Traffic, Deep Purple, etc.

If you narrow down what you want a little though, I'll try to give you a good rec. specific to what you're looking for.

BTW - Do we still have the rec. thread? I've been gone for so long that I forgot all about it until now.

well, the new nine inch nails album is available for free at nin.com
also, I recommend checking out saul william's latest album, also available for free at his website. (very good alternative hip hop)

voodoo child, I may have asked you this before, but have you heard of the group the legendary pink dots?

Why do so many people dig emo? I'm beyond bashing it. Right now, I'm just trying to understand it. It just doesn't make any sense to me. The 70's had disco, the 80's had hair metal and new wave, the 90's had boy bands, and now the 00's have emo.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>voodoo child, I may have asked you this before, but have you heard of the group the legendary pink dots?</div>

They don't come to mind, but they sound really familiar, like a band I used to know (ever have that happen to you? completely forget about a band and then randomly find them again? happens a lot to me for some reason). What songs should I check out?

Joker... why don't you check out some of the Beatles 1966 work (they had three albums that year). I didn't really listen to much pre-'67 Beatles until about November or so because I thought it was too poppy and couldn't really find any soul in it, but I've been hooked on albums like Rubber Soul and Revolver lately. It's often lighthearted, melodic music, but I it has a lot more substance to it than their pre-'66 work.

If you're looking for something new, it's about a year old, but I've been into Kings of Leon's latest album, especially the song "Camaro." They're more of an acquired taste as a whole because of the southern overtones to their music (especially vocally and lyrically), so I'm not sure if you'd like them as much as I do, but I'm really digging them.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>You want something "fresh," like a modern band, or like older bands you've never heard of?</div>

Either one is fine.

I'm really not sure how to narrow it down. I'm pretty open to anything... well excluding rap.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>BTW - Do we still have the rec. thread? I've been gone for so long that I forgot all about it until now.</div>

It's somewhere. Completely dead, though.

it's strange because some of the bands I listen to, like Gomez, aren't classified jam bands on record, but live they're completely different and jam out with the best of them.
hey, you gotta check out Michael Franti and Spearhead at Bonarao! They jam out great live, and again, you wouldn't be able to tell listening to a cd of theirs.
Legendary Pink Dots, they jam on record and live, and it's a combination of live instrumentation and electronics. It was truely a live changing concert when I saw them live, and I've not turned back since. It's a bit darker and abstract at times, but that adds to the beauty of it.

And believe it or not one of the best live jam bands is Prince!

I've checked out some Dirty Dozen because of their involvment with the all star game. It was just the music I was looking for, I've always loved that sound (huge fan of funk music- parliament funkadelic live = greatness) .

Yeah, I've seen Michael Franti and Spearhead actually, about two or three weeks ago at New Orleans' Jazzfest. I was thinking of recommending them to Joker, but I didn't think it'd be in line with the rest of his tastes. Franti's got a lot of energy though... a great live performer. I can't find a good version of it online to post, but have you ever heard "Oh My God"? That song's been stuck in my head all week.

Seen Parliament too... actually got kicked out of their show before it was over though (long story haha). They're not really what they used to be though.

Punk Rock <> Emo

Punk Rock <> Emo
</div>

I don't see how people see emo as a subgenre of punk rock. They're really nothing alike. One has a lot of balls and testosterone, and the other is whiney and completely lacks masculinity. Punk fights the establishment, emo cries about it. The only real similarities are the simplistic musical elements that make up the songs, like power chords, etc. Punk to me is Fugazi, the Misfits, the Ramones, not Fall Out Boy, Brand New, etc.

cool that you've seen franti. Oh My God is an amazing song indeed. great live peformers.
yeah, Parliament isn't what they once were. I've seen some videos of their back in the 70's though and wow.
let's not get into punk rock and emo argument. It's very obvious the crap these days that people call "punk" is a far cry from the Sex Pistols, The New York Dolls, the Stooges, the MC5...the orginal punk music. And emo doesn't even come close to that, because frankly, it's just about selling records.

Any albums by Ted Leo and the Phramacists
The Police - Outlandos d'Amour
Self - Breakfast With Girls
Spoon - Kill The Moonlight

I can't stop laughing, Todd. I was just watching the beetljuice and iron sheik arguing with each other on youtube.

I saw Yonder Mountain String Band open for DMB about two years ago. (They will be at both Bonnaroo and Rothbury). They are a bluegrass jam band, and I would recommend them to anyone who enjoys any kind of jam band. It's four guys, but no drummer. They just love to jam out and have a good time. One of their crowd favorites is "Legalize It" which says a lot I guess. At the Rothbury Festival they will be playing with Jon Fishman, the drummer from Phish.

I had the same problem as you. I have all my favorite music in my player and I kept listening to the same stuff over and over.

So I got a really nice little 4G Sansa on woot! for $40 and I only put new music on it.

Right now I'm listening to

My Morning Jacket - Evil Urges (AWESOME, totally addicted)
Death Cab for Cutie - Narrow Stairs
Portishead - Third
The Black Keys - Attack and Release

If I didn't do this, I would spend the rest of my life listening to nothing but Steely Dan and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

If you haven't heard [video=youtube;3KANI2dpXLw], I highly recommend it as well.

Yeah, I saw Yonder Mountain String Band play a set at New Orleans' House of Blues. It's a really commercial venue, but they always seem to pull the acts I like (the Roots, Les Claypool, etc.). Anyway, they've got a really unique sound for a jam band... I dig it.

And I had no idea other people here were into Howard Stern. Maybe it's because I'm not in the northeast, but I really don't know anyone else in person that listens to it. I'm on the level with that show that I tune in every morning and listen for a good two hours. I'm not a fan of Howard's insight though. In fact, I think he's a dumbass. He doesn't know what he's talking about most of the time, especially when it comes to music or politics, but the show as a whole is great. Like a caller said the other day, it's like having your daily cup of coffee. It just seems to wake me up every day.

BTW - Ghoti, speaking of Bonnaroo, both My Morning Jacket and Death Cab for Cutie are going to be there this year. I've never seen Death Cab, but I saw My Morning Jacket at Roo before, and they're probably the ones that opened my eyes to jam bands. "One Big Holiday" has got to be in my top 25-50 or so songs. You should check out the Roo this year.

Try some Rage Against the Machine? I've been listening to them a lot lately, especially "The Battle for Los Angeles" (been struggling to play the riff from 'Maria' too).
