Why do so many people dig emo? I'm beyond bashing it. Right now, I'm just trying to understand it. It just doesn't make any sense to me. The 70's had disco, the 80's had hair metal and new wave, the 90's had boy bands, and now the 00's have emo.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>voodoo child, I may have asked you this before, but have you heard of the group the legendary pink dots?</div>
They don't come to mind, but they sound really familiar, like a band I used to know (ever have that happen to you? completely forget about a band and then randomly find them again? happens a lot to me for some reason). What songs should I check out?
Joker... why don't you check out some of the Beatles 1966 work (they had three albums that year). I didn't really listen to much pre-'67 Beatles until about November or so because I thought it was too poppy and couldn't really find any soul in it, but I've been hooked on albums like Rubber Soul and Revolver lately. It's often lighthearted, melodic music, but I it has a lot more substance to it than their pre-'66 work.
If you're looking for something new, it's about a year old, but I've been into Kings of Leon's latest album, especially the song "Camaro." They're more of an acquired taste as a whole because of the southern overtones to their music (especially vocally and lyrically), so I'm not sure if you'd like them as much as I do, but I'm really digging them.

Indeed, that happens to me from time to time as well!
Tell ya what, I'll upload a few songs for you tommorow which you may like. What are some of the jam bands that you're into at the moment?
</div>
I was never really
that into jam bands until I moved to New Orleans this year. I've always liked the Allman Brothers and the Dead, but being in such a musical city, I've gone to a lot of crazy shows and have sort of discovered the jam scene. I've seen bands like Gov't Mule, Derek Trucks Band, Widespead Panic, moe., etc. Some of the electronic jam bands like STS9 and Bisco are fun to see live too, as are the jazzier ones like Dirty Dozen Brass Band.
I'm actually going to be seeing a lot of good jam bands this summer going to Bonnaroo and Rothbury (a new festival in Michigan). There's some big name headliners like Pearl Jam, 311, Metallica, Snoop Dogg, Modest Mouse, Jack Johnson, etc., but there's also a hell of a lot of good jam bands this year. Just check out the lineups -

You listen to jam bands?

I saw Yonder Mountain String Band open for DMB about two years ago. (They will be at both Bonnaroo and Rothbury). They are a bluegrass jam band, and I would recommend them to anyone who enjoys any kind of jam band. It's four guys, but no drummer. They just love to jam out and have a good time. One of their crowd favorites is "Legalize It" which says a lot I guess. At the Rothbury Festival they will be playing with Jon Fishman, the drummer from Phish.

Yeah, I saw Yonder Mountain String Band play a set at New Orleans' House of Blues. It's a really commercial venue, but they always seem to pull the acts I like (the Roots, Les Claypool, etc.). Anyway, they've got a really unique sound for a jam band... I dig it.
And I had no idea other people here were into Howard Stern. Maybe it's because I'm not in the northeast, but I really don't know anyone else in person that listens to it. I'm on the level with that show that I tune in every morning and listen for a good two hours. I'm not a fan of Howard's insight though. In fact, I think he's a dumbass. He doesn't know what he's talking about most of the time, especially when it comes to music or politics, but the show as a whole is great. Like a caller said the other day, it's like having your daily cup of coffee. It just seems to wake me up every day.
BTW - Ghoti, speaking of Bonnaroo, both My Morning Jacket and Death Cab for Cutie are going to be there this year. I've never seen Death Cab, but I saw My Morning Jacket at Roo before, and they're probably the ones that opened my eyes to jam bands. "One Big Holiday" has got to be in my top 25-50 or so songs. You should check out the Roo this year.
