Since we seem to have a separate thread for every possible center, I don't think we should exclude Nene.

He turns 31 in September, so he will be 31, 32, and 33 the next 3 seasons while getting paid 13 million each. He is frustrated with his injuries, but I doubt he retires. (Although he briefly considered it this season)

There is no doubt in my mind Washington would like to get out of his contract.
He is still good when he plays. He is strong, has a big body, plays good D, and can put the ball on the floor. Certainly not as athletic as he used to be and not a big time rebounder. (But still effective)

I would give up Joel and take on his contract. But I would not give up our draft pick. (#10) What do you guys think? He is there for the taking IMO. He is a risk like the others, but I always liked his attitude.

I've always liked nene, even though he isn't a great defensive presence

Not with his contract.

I think he is a good defender. He has very quick hands and does not allow players to back down on him. I realize he does not block a lot of shots lately, but he is above average on D.

But yeah his contract is an issue. But of course that is the only reason he will be available.

He doesn't do enough to make the remaining years on his contract somewhat palatable.

If we gave them Joel and kept #10, I wouldnt mind nene

I agree it is a big contract for someone with his nagging injuries. But I can't think of a better center we have discussed in the last
couple of months than Nene. Skills wise. (Besides Howard of course)

So our big FA acquisition would essentially be Nene, who plays 50% of the games, and is on a 3 year 40 million dollar deal? Sounds absurd.

He doesnt get a bunch of blocks but he had a d rtg of 101, which is just outside the top 20.

Nene is a great player, the only downsides are injuries and contract.

If all things went well with him and he stayed healthy he would be a great addition on the court.

If the price was only.joel Freeland and cap space, id consider it if the other options were.bad.

I am sorry what was your non-absurd option? DMC who is likely going no where and ..........

Patience. You wait for one to become available that makes sense now and in the long-term or find one in the draft and develop. Indy was very patient with Hibbert. Memphis was very patient with Gasol. Both picked well outside the lotto.

Going out and splurging on these broken down vets is beyond stupid. The core is really Lillard. By the time he's in his prime these centers will be out of the league.

OK I agree with that as well. But just for the record when someone offers a topic for discussion, it doesn't mean they want to do it, but that they want to hear everyone's opinions.

Unfortunately I dont think Paul Allen has a lot of patience

ok i can agree with that. But I am unsure where you come up with 20 million.

Pau Gasol is 19.3 mill next year.

Nene is 13 mill.

How is Nene that much more reliable than Bynum *who is coming off of a year off*? I'd rather risk 3 years on Bynum than 3 years on Nene.

I am confused by this post. I agreed with you that Bynum is a smarter risk than Nene. My question was how did you originally come up with 20 million for Nene. (The Gimpy center) 13 million is still too high, but a long ways from 20.

If the cost of attaining him is mostly about absorbing his contract and his nagging plantar fasciitis is thought to finally be mended, he'd be a tremendous addition. Dude would be big upgrade defensively over JJ and would compliment LA as he can also play on the high and low post effectively and is solid at most everything. Cue the snarky remarks about Portland's medical staff ability to correctly evaluate a player's health status, but if he's available and checks out health wise Portland should jump at that opportunity. Their starting 5 would be one of the best in the league

You countered with non-absurd options, which made me assume that you thought Gasol was attainable and worth the risk.

No I never mentioned Gasol in this thread. I was talking strictly about Nene. I did agree with you that Bynum may be better than Nene, (Since both come with a risk) but the reason I started this thread in the first place was because I think Nene is attainable. Many of the other options we have discussed IMO are not.

More concerned with his severely arthritic knees

I'd be down with essentially trading our capspace for Nene... as long as we get the Wizards lotto-pick, too!

Blech. Not a deal killer, but I sure hope we can do better.

I think you are going to be disappointed. I hope we can do better as well. I just don't think we can.

Unless you are a Pekovic fan. I guess we could offer him 12 million and get him.
But is that better? He is healthier.

A little late to the party on this thread, but can all but guarantee Nene is not nearly available as the beginning of this post indicates.

Contract and health concerns be damned, the Wizards are putting a premium at growing their global fanbase and will be playing a game in Brazil this year.

Not trying to end the discussion, but know for a fact that this one would be DOA - surprisingly, from their end...

If we are talking WAS Centers then for the cost I think I would rather have Okafor anyways. Difference however is Nene I would start. Okafor I would only start for at most 1 year before letting him be the backup.
