Nets and Memphis "close, but not close enough"

Sam Smith was on AM570 here and said the Nets are working several deals. One is the much talked Miller deal...

Miller for DA, Boki & Mags. But says Memphis is asking for the Nets own first round pick. Thorn is trying to include one of the Mavs picks. Memphis is also trying to work the deal to include Cardinal, meaning we would need to throw in additional pieces. He suggests some of the Mavs players we got to make the contracts work.

The other deal is with Miami and NY in a convoluted 3 way deal; where Miami ends up with Curry, Hassell (how is that possible already?) and Marcus; Nets get Banks & Parker; NY gets Williams and spare change.

Sounds like typical Smith rumors; except for the Memphis part. I tend to believe it... would make sense for Memphis to ask for that; hence Thorn stalling if it's true.

i dont think any of the players we just acquired can be traded

salary wise we cant take on cardinal and miller, we dont have the pieces for both

we can just do the miller deal and screw it if they want our 1st pick give it to them

thorn should hold out until the grizz accepts the mav's pick, we are rebuilding anyway so mike miller is just someone nice to have as compared to a team trying to be competitive going into the playoffs. if this new group doesn't mesh right away and vc is traded, we'll get a lottery pick and that is more valuable in the rebuilding effort than an $8M shooter. also, the nets are one of the few who have a surplus of picks they can afford to give away...

I really hope the Memphis rumor is true. Easily worth a non-lottery first rounder to get Miller, maybe even a low lottery pick since Miller is still only 27. He is exactly what this team needs: a shooter with enough all round game to not make himself a liability in other areas. If Memphis would accept NJ's lottery-protected pick this year, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

As for Cardinal, the guy can shoot the long ball. His contract runs for 2 more years after this one, just like Hassell's. But whereas Hassell is owed 8.7M over that time, Cardinal is owed 13.05M. If Memphis would accept a separate trade of Miller for expirings in exchange for us trading Hassell for Cardinal in a second deal straight up -- thus saving Memphis well over 4M over the next two years -- I'd do that as well. I haven't bothered with the math, but we do have a trade exception we could use part of on the Cardinal swap, if necessary.

good stuff - I would do the deal for our pick as well if it is lotto protected.

That's why I said "lottery protected". I would even go as far as to make it top 10 protected but nothing beyond that. Miller was the rookie of the year, is a solid, versatile wing that plays hard, and is still only 27. He's worth that much IMO.

Can not combine TE with a player in a trade. So unless we have a TE large enough to take on Cardinal, that deal would not work.

I wouldnt be surprised if there was another trade, but I would be very surprised if it's Carter or Jefferson.

I could see the Nets trying for someone like Gerald Green or J.J. Redick with one of those players, sending a pick and a TE. Miller sounds awfully complicated. Brian Cardinal? Please.

And by the way, $3 million in cash could come in very handy as well. The Nets shipped out $1.5 million to the Hornets to take Ilic and Robinson off our hands...and paid Gill and Thomas $200K. So maybe Ratner will let the team use the remainder to sweeten a deal.

I cannot believe how much Cuban threw into this trade.

It wasn't proposed because of admiration for his game but rather out of a realization that Memphis is cutting every penny they can and that Hassell will cost 4.4M less than Cardinal over the next two years. I personally feel Cardinal has a little more to offer this particular team, and if it was enough of an inducement to get the deal for Miller done without relinquishing a first round pick, well worth it.

Out of curiosity, why would you be very surprised if Carter was dealt? The Internet is swirling with varied reports that NJ is shopping him hard. Is it just his contract that you feel will keep him here at least through this season?

If the cost for Miller becomes high enough, people who were not available might all of a sudden come into play.

There are younger players that can be had cheaper if Memphis is asking for too much, though.
