If the Nets ever relocate to Brooklyn, their new arena will likely be a scaled-down version of star architect Frank Gehry's much-touted design thanks to the dismal economy.

Developer Bruce Ratner shot down rumors yesterday that he had canned Gehry from the embattled Atlantic Yards project but admitted that he was exploring cheaper ways to build an arena.

The arena alone is currently estimated to cost nearly $1 billion.

"We are continuing to speak with many arena experts and working hard to find ways to build a world-class venue in an incredibly difficult economic environment," said Ratner spokesman Joe DePlasco.

Litigation, too, is holding up the $4 billion Atlantic Yards project. Last month, the developer stopped all work until a lawsuit seeking to block Atlantic Yards is decided.

When will the scam stop.
Keep 'em home where hey belong.
New Jersey Nets LIVE from Downtown Newark!

What a bunch of tools. Why would established Knicks fans ever want to become Nets fans?

They are fairweather fans and will say "I'm a lifetime New Yorker and have always been a Knick fan" if the Knicks finish the season better.

True... but the Nets aren't any better. Why would they chose a sucky no name team over a sucky big name team to which they are already attached and affiliated with?

If they move to Brooklyn, I guess they'll just have that newer vibe about them. Stupid reason to switch teams, but they aren't really fans in the first place.

But what vibe? It's not like a team from Seattle is re-locating. It's a team from Jersey that isn't anything new at all. Most people in Brooklyn know the whole move thing is being done to promote the AY... not for them at all.

New arena might appeal to the fairweather fans.

I think it's best if the Nets stay in Jersey, anyway.

Agreed. I am just trying to understand the angle the Nets ownership are trying to play... and it doesn't seem anything substantial. Oh wells.
