Nets Defense

I have a question on how the Nets rate defensively as of now. We don't know too much about the rookies but can only hope they all play good defense but how bout the others.

Josh Boone is he a good defender, hes not a great shot blocker like he was in college, any one know why. Hes strong and I remember he held his own agaisnt Dwight Howard but is he considered an above average defender? Can he match up against centers day in and day out ?

Sean Williams he blocks a ton of shots but seems to be an inexperienced defender. He blocks changes the shot of small guys coming into the lane but will he be able to guard let's say Elton Brand one on one? He seemed skinny last year but you guys said hes bulked up. He did amazing agaisnt Beasly but that was Beasly's second game ever. Is sean williams an consistent defender?

Harris- I heard is one of the top defending PGs in the league but I didn't really see anything he did that well last year. He seems to run out of gas and tires before he hits 40 minutes.

Carter- honestly I think hes a good defender when he wants to be but with Jefferson gone will he be chosen to shut down the other team's top scorer if so the Nets will be in trouble. I think he'll need to be so focused on offense this year if he wants to give his team a chance to win , defense will slip even more for him this year.

Swift- I wish Frank would have just let him play 30 minutes one game last year so we can just see what he can do, otherwise I know little about what kind of defense he plays but heard hes never been willing to do it.

Yi- we all know that hes a bad defender but he know hes bad and will try to improve.

Simmons- hard nosed playey, havn't seen him play much, probably nobody will ever call him a lock down defender and has been said to have lost a step do to surgery. his defense may disapoint us to where we were wishing for even R.J to come back.

Hassel- after his first game I read this forums as a guest and everybody became a fan favorite and said hes strong, tough and a lock down defender. That quickly faded and so did his minutes.

Marcus- He actually didn't have that bad of a reputation of defense coming out of college but he just can't stay in front of his man. I think I'll call him the worst defender on the team.

Nachbar- I don't understand why a guy with his atheltic ability can't defend a sheet. I felt hes way too soft on defense and doesn't make up enough for it with his offense. Hope he leaves

Kristic- Was improving as a defender and rebounder but injuy set him back a lot. Will just be an average defender if he ever returns to full health. Not a true center either

Ager- was called a very good defender coming out of college but barely sees the court to prove it.

A lot of defenders when they come out of college are considered good defenders but then some could never adapt to the NBA style of play. That's why I'm not going to judge the rookies yet. CDR is a toss up on if hes going to be a good defender or not. I have high hopes for Lopez but hes just a rookie and theres no way he'll be more than an average defender this upcoming season. Anderson has never been called a good defender even in college but at least he can't be any worse than Nachbar.

Josh Boone- has become a good help defender and can body up NBA centers. I believe he's less effective with shooting bigs. he seems to have the stamina to guard night in night out.

Sean Williams- is an inexperienced basketball player with tremendous upside. When he play with purpose he can do some amazing things. He seems to be comitted to filling a role and doing his job well. He's smart and still learning how to defend in the NBA.

Harris- good. worried about his ankles though.

Carter- an experienced NBA all-star. knows when to turn it on. knows when to slack off.

Swift- big guy. tremendous athlete. little bit dumb.

Yi- dunno.

Simmons- dunno, but he'll do what coach asks of him.

Hassel- can defend, cannot score

Marcus- slow, airheadded, at times disinterested in defense.

Nachbar- not that bad

Kristic- ok

Ager- never seen

In general I think they are hanging their hats on D.

Lopez- might be great.

CDR- can defend, but will never be an elite defender.

Anderson- probably on a Boki level

(Carrol)- haven't seen, but seems to have the speed.

Since no one knows about Ager's defense, I'll chime in with a quote from a scouting report I wrote during the '06 draft -

"Ager has the potential to be a great defender on the next level because of his long arms and lateral quickness, but in order to be that great defender, he can't just go through the motions on defense and take possessions off like he tended to do in his senior season. When he was an underclassman, Ager played with a lot more intensity on defense because there was less pressure on him to produce on the offensive end, so with the burden of Michigan State's scoring load on his back, Ager drifted away from defense a bit and didn't perform the way he should have. Still, he has all the physical tools to become one of the league's better defenders if he wants it badly enough."

I stand by what I said there. He has the tools to be great, but who knows how he's developing with his lack of playing time. The sudden break in playing time and exposure can't be helping though. Knowing his mentality, he's the type of player who'll try to earn playing time by trying to impress offensively before falling into place on the defensive end.

As for Chris Douglas-Roberts, I don't expect much defense (nor significant playing time) from him for a while. The point that he's thin has been hammered home enough since the draft, but he's also surprisingly slow on his feet defensively. He can get out there on the break, but he has a bit of a slow reaction time on the other end of the floor. Those two weaknesses are some of the main reasons he fell from the mid-to-late 20's range of the draft to #40.

I don't know what you're talking about. Everyone's been extremely positive about CDR's game ever since he tested the draft process. I've read thing on this board about fans wanting him to have the starting job, about fans wanting to pre-order his jersey, etc.

Sure, he'll likely be better than most of his second round counterparts, but what is that saying? He wasn't a lottery talent that fell to New Jersey. If he were, then why would your own franchise pass him up at #21 for Ryan Anderson? I've lived in Memphis most of my life, I know a lot of the players, and I've coached at camps run by the coaching staff, so I've seen a lot of CDR and know his game.

He was a steal. He's a good player, but is he a great player? No. Should he step into serious playing time this season? It may happen, but he shouldn't, not with Ager on the roster.

What are you talking about? First off, Maurice Ager was named an All-Star at the Vegas Summer League and has been in the league for two years. Secondly, what has CDR proven?

Don't pull an ad hominem on me, KC. Besides, if you were on the JBB side before the merge, you'd see I criticized the hell out of Mo Ager. I feel that without him on the Spartans' 2006 quad, they could have won the national title. He was a total hack and a complete cancer.

However, that's neither here nor there at the moment. In an off-the-ball role, he's my pick over CDR nine times out of ten and should be any coach's pick as well.

As for his playing time these past two seasons, he spent most of them on a Dallas roster that included Josh Howard, Jason Terry, Eddie Jones, Jerry Stackhouse, and Devean George. Who do the Nets have standing in his way?

Wtf really? People want him to start? Ha. They'll be disappointed.

The Nets were really high on Anderson. They wanted him to replace Boki, maybe? He's a great shooter, good rebounder, so I'm assuming they'd figured he'd be a better fit than CDR - being able to play both forward spots and shoot the 3 well, unlike CDR.

I've read around that the Nets actually were considering CDR at 21.

defense is a big part of EFFORT... last year i didnt see the extra effort from the guys... hopefully with a new beginning... players will not only be responsible from themselves... but for each other....

I honestly think that Sean will be a big factor in determining how consistant our defensive effort will be.

i will say this about the rookies and other players on the summer league. They are all playing great defense for a summer league team. I'm impressed with all of them which is a great sign of the nets coaching and teaching. How that will translate into the regular long grueling season against other world class athletes is another story. But atleast they are on the right track.
