Nets Interested in Stromile Swift … Again?
January 31, 2008, 6:16 am Ron Tillery of the Memphis Commercial Appeal reports Stromile Swift, the athletic but underachieving power forward, is on the market again and that the Nets are likely to be interested. Tillery reveals the Nets were rebuffed in an earlier attempt to pick up Swift for Jamaal Magloire. Swift, 28, will be paid $5.8 million this season and has a player option at $6.2 million for next. He was suspended by the Griz this week.

Especially because, id rather Magloire expire if we cant get anything better....and sean williams is already better then stromile...who is most deff going to pick up his 6.2M player option next season...not worth it
 
This guy seems like a real reporter - so I didn't want to blatantly accuse him of making things up, but I posted a comment questioning his source on that one.

Whooooo, that is a whopper of a lie there.

Either he got that from Swift's agent or he has a source with the team that has really sketchy information that's best left out of the paper.
 
Actually, I believe it. Thron has always been bizarrely enamored with Stro.

How does anyone that watched Thron give Jeff McInnis a two year deal not believe he'd go after Not So Swift?

McInnis fit the budget. Statistically, many made the argument that he was a bargain. That's why Thorn was so hot for him.

Swift makes an absurd, budget-busting $6.2M next season, which the Nets can't pay and the owner wouldn't approve.

If i am Stromile there is no way i opt out of 6.2M next season unless by some crazzzzzyyyyy surprise the Rockets offer me the same 5 year contract at the full MLE!!!!!!

Other then that i fully expect Swift to pick up that 6.2M option because his next contract will be nothing close to that sum.

The chances of him opting out are the same as Jamaal Magloire paying attention to Frank during a timeout huddle.

Why wouldn't we go for Hakim? He has the offense we are missing in the low post and his bad defense can be made up by Sean.

Ratner would pay the luxury tax for the "right player" and I have little doubt that Thron sees Swift as that player. Thron gave Magloire 4 million, paying Swift 6.2 would seem like a bargain to him.

Swift is not a bad pickup...I mean he's not a bad player really the criticism on him is that he could be a great player but doesnt have the desire to be one. As a backup PF/C he would be a big improvement over Collins and would definately improve bench scoring.

Still feel are focus should be on trying to trade Kidd, Carter and RJ...but who knows maybe Thorn is feeling he cn't get a proper deal so he wants to try to make a slight change, get Nenad back and see if we can slide into the 6th or 7th seed and then surprise people.

If you think this guy is worth $6.2M dollars we are watching two different NBAs.

Have you been watching the same Thron I have? Do you doubt how enamored Thron is with Swift? Do you doubt how desperate Thron is right now to keep this team in the playoffs?

The trade doesn't make basketball sense, but this is Thron we are talking about. Yes it is a financial nightmare of a trade, but there is still time this season to make other tax savings trades or to include Malik in the trade.

He is a horrible pickup.

The criticism is that he isn't even a mediocre NBA player. Houston had to dangle Rudy Gay in order to trade him.

He wouldn't improve anything over Twin.

Exactly. He's not in a situation where he can opt out of his deal and sign a bigger one. He's not going to get that much money, so there is no way he'll just leave it on the table like that.
 
Thorn is reminding me of Glen Grudwald when he was the GM of the Raptors. He never wants to blow the team up because he knows their capable of being a playoff team; so instead he just gets "band aid" players like Stromile Swift. Give it up Thorn. Just work on trying to get rid of Kidd and Carter.

An underachiever, and bringing him to New Jersey won't change that. Unless you're in the position where you have to take Stro in order to complete some deal, there is no real point in acquiring him. Yeah, he can run the floor, but if Kidd is gone, what's the point?
 
Why is Swift an underachiever?

He doesn't know how to play basketball and he has never been able to learn.

Just because he's tall and athletic doesn't mean he's bound to be an NBA legend.
 
In the article yesterday they mentioned the Nets had to make a move before they could do the Kidd deal to obtain the extra roster spots needed.

Wow I would do this in a heart beat, although I also have a penchant for athletic players who can't do anything else but jump. Perhaps Josh Boone's improving post defense would be enough to persuade the more 'traditional-appreciative' basketball fans.

Well it won't help immediately since this would be a one-for-one deal. (And an absolutely ridiclious one at that...).
