Ya'll are going to love this kid.

He's grown a lot in while at Memphis. He said coming out of Detroit he had an attitude. He's grown and learned alot under Cal. He's a respectful kid with a no-nonsense attitude.

He can flat out play. As mentioned previously in this thread, he was the best player on the best team in the country (OK, Kansas might have a slight claim to that
). He was a 1st Team All-American and he earned it.

He's a winner. He doesn't accept defeat. Watch the end of the UAB game in Birmingham. UAB was up. Memphis had the ball. CDR wanted the ball. I wouldn't have wanted the ball in anybody's hands OTHER than him.

I can't wait to watch him play.

Also, per the bad-workout-reports, I think Cal addressed that adequately last night. CDR is unconventional. If you compare him to others he may not look as good. But come game time you've got a winner. Montana was a horrible work-out guy and his stock dropped, but he got it done when it counted.</div>

Memphis fan here, so yes I'm biased. Please indulge me for a moment…

You guys just landed a first team All-American. Everyone here in Memphis appreciated and revered DRose but it was CDR who was our go-to-guy. CDR aka "Buckets" has what the other players called "old man moves". He has a knack for scoring with the 3, floaters, spin moves, you name it. We could almost always count on his slashing dribble drive moves to create offense. He's athletic, smart, adroit and has an impeccable work ethic. He’s an all-around true competitor and great kid.

All of us here in Memphis are in SHOCK that he went at 40. Congratulations to your fans and organization. CDR will NOT disappoint.
 
Welcome, slktigers, umbluegrey, and daddyodewy! I'm lovin that fans of Memphis are coming to the board to congratulate us on CDR. That's gotta say somethin about CDR.

Btw, I'd like to note that CDR shot 54% from the field. That's amazing for CDR. I like the thought of comparing him to RJ in terms of scoring efficiently. I love that.

(Ya, that's 8% higher than our lottery big man "stud", Lopez.

Rockets fans all wanted CDR when we knew we got the 34th pick so when Morey (Rockets GM) was asked why he didn't pick CDR when we desperately needed bench scoring at the 2/3.

"Morey says he is gifted between 6 and 15 feet he is an amazing offensive player.... but he says he gets no speratation on that shot, struggles against NBA types to get that shot, and can not shoot past 15 feet and his distance shooting will struggle...says he is someone that Memphis did not run plays for and was just beating his guy off the dribble and Adelman's offense does not work for that type of player." - from recap taken from DaDa's post on Clutchfans.

Where'd all these Memphians come from... and more importantly, where in Memphis are ya'll from?

I've been posting on boards for almost eight years (sounds crazy long when I think about it, but then again, I started posting on sites when I was just like 12/13-ish because no one I knew in my personal life wanted to talk ball haha), and I've only ever seen one other Memphis poster in all that time, and he actually turned out to be a former HS teammate of mine (before he transferred... to the HS team that had Jerry West's kid and Marc Gasol... yeah, I was jealous).

So it's nuts for me to see Memphis fans show up. We're not really a basketball city. As these guys who're showing up out of nowhere will tell ya, no one in Memphis really cares about the Grizz, and the Tigers just got good a few years ago when Calipari came into town a few years ago with all his money.

Why don't you guys stick around and post a bit? I guarantee you our college basketball talk is good. That's my area, and I know a lot of our posters are just as legit about their college interest.

Btw, FUCK king Willie... who is with me?
 
This guy is a huge intangibles guy... Has all the signs of a Boozer/Arenas size steal...

AT WORST he is a taller Hassan Adams... which is A-OK for a mid second rounder.
 
Do we know what his number will be? I need to order my custom CDR jersey from the nba store.

Memphis has always been a bball town,, from the 50's when we went to NIT a few times , to the 70's with championship game with UCLA and Bill Walton.. thru the 80's with Keith Lee and final four ,, and 90's with Penny Hardaway... although maybe not as rich in tradition as Kansas or KY, or NC.. we love our Tiger basketball ..

Now with the Nets adding CDR.. we will love some Nets. and yea never much of grizz fan here but city did support them when they won..
 
I live in Detroit and i know CDR is a detroit native...but his refusal to even give the Pistons a chance to work him out....he througnt hes a top 20 guy..

I wouldn't go as far as calling Memphis a bball town, not with all the towns out there that actually are bball towns. The Tigers were a historical nothing until Calipari got here. A few years here and there are nothing that a team like Western Kentucky can't boast. The Tigers have never won a title, they have less tournament apperances than the likes of BYU, Princeton, DePaul, St. John's, Utah, Penn, Kansas State, Iowa, etc. They only have two Final Four appearances on the record books too (and only one before Cal), which teams like Baylor, Bradley, CCNY, Colorado, Dartmouth, DePaul, Holy Cross, La Salle, NYU, Oregon State, Providence, Purdue, St. John's, Temple, etc. can boast.

They really haven't been a basketball school historically. They've been a school that occassionally has a good basketball team, but nobody thought of them as a basketball legacy until Cal and his money rolled into town.

With that disagreement aside though, I'm glad to see another Memphis poster on the site. Where are you from?

Maybe it's just semantics, but Memphis has supported TIGER b-ball since we came in second in the 1957 NIT. TIGER basketball is # 1 in Memphis and whatever is # 2 is so far behind, it doesn't make any difference.

Maybe nationally we aren't/haven't been thought of as a basketball school........but in Memphis......fugetaboutit.

The NETS will have many Memphians follow them......as will Houston that drafted Joey Dorsey and the Bulls with Mr. Rose. Make no mistake.....in Memphis we love, remember, and stay loyal to all who have worn TIGER BLUE.

And CDR......... as Tina Turner sang.......simply the best.

You guys will be proud he wears a NET Jersey

I have my doubts. It's not very often so many GM's are so wrong on a guy. It happens, but usually not with someone as visible as CDR. Monta Ellis and Paul Millsap were different. Ellis was a high school player who had had knee surgery. Millsap was a small college player who showed up out of shape for his workouts.

Nearest examples I can think of are Michael Redd who dramatically altered his shot after scoring only 10 points TOTAL his rookie season, and Carlos Boozer, but he too adjusted big time when he got into the pro's, losing 25 pounds.

Nets liked him which is great, were trying to buy or trade for him late in the first round which is encouraging..and Dave D said before the draft that Kiki thought he had had the best workout of any of the 30+ prospects who had been seen by then, an indication they weren't just blowing smoke after the draft. BUT they do not have a good record in the second round. (Nets didnt pick Korver for themselves. They picked him for the Sixers.) The rest of the second rounders in the Thorn era are Soumalia Samaki, Brian Scalabrine, Tamar Slay, Christian Drejer, Mile Ilic, and Hassan Adams.

Manu Ginobili Rashard Lewis and Gilbert Arenas come to mind. I understand why people would have doubts, But make no mistake about it. We got the steal of the night with CDR.

I see him comparable to a poor man's RJ when he first entered the league...he's not quite as athletic as RJ but he should be a good defender who can slash to the basket and score on fast break points. It will be uip to CDR's commitment in the gym working on his shot and offensive game that determines what type of player he ultimately becomes. He's been an underdog his entire career...if he keeps a chip on his soldier then he might just be able to grow into a very good pro.

he seems to be a more natural scorer than RJ, IMO, has a better shot than RJ had comming into the league. I think his game is gonna translate well and he'll quickly become a fan fav.

to play devil's advocate:

(1) there were those reports about how some teams passed on him because he didn't work out for them.
(2) He's seen as an unathletic Junior without much upside . . . once more it comes down to individual preferences by GMs; many prefer to gamble on the athletic young guy.
(3) once the second round hits, all bets are off--too many teams want to just forfeit their picks, so they take some foreign kid who will never see the light of day, just to satisfy the fans, I think. Especially given the fact that a couple of teams had two picks in the top of the second round, and those teams already had rosters full of guarranteed contracts (yes, I checked before the draft), I had a hunch that a projected late first rounder would fall to the Nets in the second round.
(4) no team has a good record in the second round, it isn't just the Nets. But CDR has as good a chance to work out as anyone this year. But we said the same thing about Hassan Adams, too.

I want to add that it was a really weird 2nd round this year. It seems anumber of teams were choosing for need. Here's a look at the 9 picks before the Nets:
31 - T'Wolves - took a Euro stash center (Pekovic)
32 - OKC for Detroit - wanted a PF (Sharpe)
33 - Portland (to Houston) - wanted an enforcer down low (Dorsey)
34 - T'Wolves (to Miami) - wanted a pg (Chalmers)
35 - Clips - took best available big (Jordan)
36 - Portland (to Chicago) - Euro stash center (Asik)
37 - Bucks - odd choice here (Mbah a Moute)
38 - Bobs - again an odd choice considering CDR available (Weaver)
39 - Bulls (to Denver) - oddest choice of them all (Weems)

Considering the motives of 31 to 36 I think CDR could have gone as high as 37, but since the Bucks got RJ from us did they really need CDR? Probably not. Still don't get Bobs and Bulls choices at 38 or 39. I get Weaver if CDR is gone, but he wasn't.

Another thing that could've influenced people is that they already knew who they wanted in rd 2. As for why he wasn't drafted within the last 5 picks of round 1 I think a lot of big guys dropped (Batum, Arthur, Greene) and a couple early 2nd rounders jumped (Hill, White, Giddens). From pick 24 on it was an odd draft.
