Nets Send Young Bigs to Big Man Camp

August 15, 2008, 10:25 pm Josh Boone hurt his elbow the first day of camp and Yi Jianlian couldn’t come because he was otherwise occupied in Beijing, but all the Nets’ other 20-something bigs–Brook Lopez, Sean Williams and Ryan Anderson–spent a week at Pete Newell’s legendary big man camp in Las Vegas. Rod Thorn thought “all played pretty well.” It was Anderson’s second time with Newell. Chris Douglas-Roberts also attended.

Who knows what drastic improvements this will bring, but Sean Williams seemed to develop the foundation of a post game in the short time he spent with John Lucas before he was drafted. Perhaps he's the kind of guy that can absorb stuff like this well.

Although given the chance to play against Pete Newell competition, or all-world competition...well I'd say he's getting enough experience this Summer :)

Yi's already been there.

From a USA Today article.
Newell, the legendary Hall of Fame coach who has run the Big Man Camp for years, had Yi there four years ago. He renewed acquaintances last month, watching Yi work out at UCLA. "Yi will end up being the best player in the NBA from China, and I know that's saying a lot," Newell, 91, says. "He has much more body control than Yao, and he's a much better jumper. I'm real high on him, and I think I'm right."
Like Del Harris, Kiki, and Don Nelson, Newell is a big fan of Yi.

Interesting the Nets bigs were there, I thought it was mostly high school kids who attend.

Nets are on a tight budget? :)

I guess every little bit of practice helps (for noobs)

I haven't read this because I'm lazy and tired, but I wonder if this is what the Nets do every year. If so, then I consider it a major plus. And a great move by Frank & company.

I dont think they do. Take a look at the alumni lists on the Newell website and you dont find Net players.

It's one of the subtle shifts in player development. The Nets also played in two summer leagues--essentially development leagues--this season instead of one. That's another. There are probably others that we are unaware of.

This is a Kiki thing. He was director of player development in Dallas when they had a big man who needed help...played against Yi yesterday.

Damn, well this sounds great to me. I like all these things we're doing. Sounds like we brought in the right guy for rebuilding.

THis is great for are big men, but why was CDR at big man camp???

Kenyon attended the camp after he was drafted.

Other notable names: Jabari Smith, Rodney Rodgers. Jim McIlvaine, Eric Montross, Desagana Diop, Scott Padgett and Todd McCulloch

That's an epic list of great Nets big men.

Prepare for a breakout season from every Nets young big. And CDR.

I doubt the Nets sent any of them, considering that none were drafted by the Nets, and other than Big Todd, none were Nets in their second year in the league either.

Swift went his second year in 2001, where he played with Jason Collins, who had just been drafted that year.

ya this is the first im hearing of it... but why is cdr at the camp? hes a big man? :p
