I hope Frank can continue to make better adjustments, but if he lost this game, the way the wizards are at right now...I would've killed him.

The Wizards are exactly the same as they were last year except Thomas and Dixon are in for Haywood and Mason.

They were six point favorites.

Nick Young looked very good. I remember that i thought there was a legitimate chance that he would fall to the nets a few years ago, and that they would select him. Oh well. Who did they take again?

The worst part? ?The last game of that season (Nets v Wiz) was a game thrown by Tim Donaghy. The Nets won.

If Young were on board by the time we pick there would be high probability we picked him up. I remember Thorn saying something like Wiz taking Young before Nets made their choice easy at 17.

two quick comments:

It looked like about half the possessions, Vince brought up the ball and served as the primary ball handler, and Devin was the off-ball guard. I wonder if there are some sets they run with Vince handling the ball, and some with Devin handling the ball. I thought it was interesting, because it could cause havoc with the other team defensively. Vince can certainly do a pretty good job as a PG.

Also, I noticed that Hassell came off the bench and played most of the fourth quarter once the Nets had a lead. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a Hassell-Najera combo at the end of games to close things out. We're a team of specialists.

Hassell didn't play last night, do you mean Hayes?

Hassell didn't play. Are you thinking of Hayes?

My thoughts:

- Frank is doing what many thought he couldn't: be willing to play his bench and rest his starters, especially Vince and Devin just enough for them to be fresh all game. Also he played all 3 rookies, and for a significant amount of minutes as well.

- Vince did great a job deciding when to score and when to defer. He racked up the assists in the first half and tried to get people going, and in the second half he just went ballistic, abusing whoever was guarding him. He had a good mix of drives and jump shots.

- Devin is money from the step back jumper? I guess so! His quickness is extremely evident, whether it's driving the lane, or suddenly changing directions (last night, it was mostly a step backward, to give him space to shoot the jumper). He passed the ball around well enough to get 8 assists if Simmons wasn't so cold. Nothing Kidd-like, but he also didn't try to be flashy. He was efficient, and scored judiciously. I like it.

- Like ghoti said, Yi has NO confidence issues. He IS money from 10 feet, 16 feet, 18 feet, and 24 feet. And yeah, 0 feet as well. He has no conscience as a shooter, and that's a good thing because he's an absolute dead-eye shooter. But he's also not afraid to drive the lane for a hard dunk, and he also had a VERY impressive monster block on Etan Thomas (and that guy is HUGE). Also argued with the ref. I liked that as well. Get what you deserve young prodigy!

- Jarvis Hayes. I doubt Jarvis before the season started, but if he can be the player he was last night every other game... what a steal by ThronKiki. No hesitation to him jumpshot and he is also beautifully accurate. He may have saved the Nets last game. Still seemed pretty athletic as well.

- Bobby Simmons. Took open shots and missed them. Not too worried, he'll hit those 3's eventually at around a ~400 clip.

- Brook Lopez is huge. No one could really contain him, his missed shots were his own doing. A beast out there once he establishes position and a much better rebounder than I thought. Definitely an active rebounder, as he skys high for them and doesn't wait for them to come to him. Swatted many shots inside as well. I'm extremely happy we have him.

- Ryan Anderson played a good game for his role and minutes. Hit a 3, drove the lane with probably surprising quickness (not to me however), and collected rebounds and had a nice dish to Brook for the slam. Not more you could ask for.

- Yes, Dooling took some bad shots, and I can see how he isn't that great of a passer, but for the first time in many seasons, I felt... confident when our starting point guard wasn't in the game. Dooling has a calming presence... I don't get worried when he comes in for Harris and his competitive nature is contagious.

- CDR disappointed me a bit. He didn't seem very aggressive at all. Felt like he was just a cog in the dribble drive offense, when he probably should be one of the finishers. Could have just been the way the plays were run, however. I'm sure he'll make his mark on a game sooner or later.

- And finally, the TEAM! Yeah Sean and Ager didn't play but you couldn't tell by watching them to cheer and get ecstatic when the team on the floor scored or played some good defense. Everyone was into it, and it was just so refreshing and exciting to see. Vince also mentioned that Sean was still mentoring Ryan and Brook and Boone during the game, and Frank said that the whole team was very supportive and energetic and it was great to see.

That's my take! It was fun to watch and I'm excited to watch them play at home!

He wears #44. I'm cool with not seeing it at all this season.

yeah, I kind of thought it was weird when I saw him. Or thought I saw him. They both have an "Ha" on their jerseys and are bald.

Welcome! Yeah, I was sad when that sick dunk by Yi didn't count. Good eyes and pass by Brook and awesome finish by Yi. He threw that down with quickness and authority. Too bad it was half a second too late, according to the refs.

Great post, kdub. Expressed many of my thoughts as well.

yeah, I kind of thought it was weird when I saw him. Or thought I saw him. They both have an "Ha" on their jerseys and are bald.

The Wizards play-by-play guy mistaked Hayes for Carter once. I laughed, even though I can sorta see the similar body structure. Sorta.

I finally got around to watching the game, here are a few (and hopefully new!) thoughts:

1) If Javale McGee is 7'0", and Yi is 7'0" then Brook is at least 7'2". I think we've found Sean's replacement for the "Guess my real height" game.

2) It was so refreshing watching the team run the offense and play defense as a team. There were no plays that were iso's from the onset, and only on a very rare occasion did our sets run stagnant. It's going to be a fun year to watch the team.

3) Remember how in just about every game thread last year we took bets if the team could score through the 60's?

4) Brook could have easily come off the bench to have a 15/8 night. There were a lot of forced/wild shots along with some flubs right underneath the basket. This just looked like he lacked the focus, polish, and experience that comes with being a rookie, that's all. He'll be a player for us.

5) Speaking of wild shots, how about that first quarter? Once we settled down we were pretty impressive, but it looks like the biggest immediate impact of playing a young unfamiliar team will be a couple more airballs in the following months.

6) I'm not sure why anyone could say that CDR had a bad game. He gets a grade of N/A, since we apparently decided to hold on to Jacyee Carroll and give him Jabari Smith's old jersey. CDR had zero impact on the game because whenever he played Dooling was running the point, and was throwing up as many shots as he could.

7)...he was still a huge upgrade over Marcus though!

8) Yi is a beast. It was getting ridiculous how good his jumper looked, and how automatic it was for long stretches of the game; range from 3, too?

He is capable of it, but he needs to have a more consistent three point shot. If he can do that, his range will only increase, and he is faster than alot of big men or taller than most people at his position.

Good thing going yeah? I'll be keeping a close eye on Yi. Go Chinese players!

Yi also put up an inspiring effort when guarding Butler. It confirmed that he can't stay in front of SF's, but his effort and quickness was still very impressive for a 7 footer.

Does he inspire you Jigga? :D

we'll compete every night, but we won't win every night. The shooting displays by Yi and Hayes won't be duplicated every game. Also, there are still obvious weaknesses containing offensive rebounds by the opposition, and we'll get punished by a team with a more skilled inside scorer.

Also, if Brook and/or Boone get into foul trouble, we'll struggle. Despite all these reports on how "deep" the Nets are up front, there are just four players capable of playing center--and that includes Swift and Sean, who are there out of necessity. Brook is the only one that can stand up to a big center. Also, we could easily get abused by big and strong PFs with an inside game, at least until Najera returns.

We'll get beaten every time out by the top ten teams--the teams that are deep AND experienced. I can see the Nets being slightly above .500 against everyone else. 39 wins.

From what I remember, I think they actually ran at least 3 or 4 straight ISOs for Vince late in the 4th. They were nearly all successful though.

What was really encouraging about how they used Vince in the second half, though, was that they had him in the post, back to basket from 12 feet and in. A few times they had him mid-wing (15-17') facing in an isolation situation. That's a much different and better way to use him than having him catch from 20' closer to the middle. He is forced to be aggressive (which hasn't been a problem since the Kidd trade anyway) when he gets the ball in those areas of the floor. And now that he has teammates that can actually shoot long range, Vince in the post should be a staple of the late offense.
