The Blazers could make a change at the general manager position or keep Kevin Pritchard in charge. Either way, they need to bring in someone who handles the salary cap and contract issues and Oklahoma City Thunder assistant general manager Rich Cho has had his name mentioned by some to assume Tom Penn's position, although that would be a lateral move.

Darnell Mayberry of The Oklahoman doesn't believe that Cho is on the Blazers radar to become their general manager, but he does have the credentials to do the job.

Mayberry writes: "Cho is in his 12th season with the Thunder/Sonics franchise. ... Cho is as integral as any person in the organization. He handles contract negotiations, salary cap and Collective Bargaining Agreement matters, player contracts and all player personnel issues. ... Cho also overseas operations for the Thunder-owned Tulsa 66ers of the NBA D-League. It's possible, perhaps even probable, that Portland passes up Cho. But if Pritchard gets the ax and the Blazers go in a different direction, it could have a trickle-down effect if their selection is another team's GM."

Wasn't Cho The Sonics' guy in the war room along with KP when it was learned the Blazers had nailed the ping-pong ball that resulted in the #1 pick (Oden)?

Thunder fans are derisive about the corny-looking hick Darnell Mayberry. Apparently he's not terribly bright. Former Seattle fans have heard of Cho for years.

Rick Cho is as good as Penn. Most teams have a good cap guy like this, if it's not the GM. Most keep the guy secret more than we do to prevent him from being stolen, while Penn and Cho are out in the open. Pritchard always praises everything done by him, his hires, and the players he himself got.

So he told us how brilliant Penn is, but other teams have someone similar. I don't know why it's not always the GM himself. The top guy should be good in all his departments.

I actually don't mind having a specialist around to worry about the #'s. Let the gM worry about personal.

Is this bad attitude why you never get a promotion??

Fact is that "Cap Guru" is not as tough of a job as KP has made it out to be. Any intelligent person, especially lawyer, should be able to work through the Cap issues. Once the GM says 'we want player X', it is not very tough to work though all the variables to get player X.

Hell, the Blazers could probably hire 'storyteller' and come out just fine.
