Does this mean he wont contribute in this draft???

Schmitz has a vast array of scouting and player relationships and deep prospect knowledge across multiple continents that Cronin expects will plan a significant role in shaping the Blazers' roster.

Schmitz is expected to remain with ESPN through the June 23 NBA Draft, and formally begin his duties with Portland in July. The Blazers have the seventh overall pick in 2022 Draft.

26 min mark. They talk about the blazers. Schmitz says hes taking BPA "if im in that seat." Specifically points out Shaedon Sharpe as a candidate that hed spring for multiple times.

Says he has seen him play a bunch in Canada and while in HS. Compares sharpe to Anthony Edwards. He says he went to a Kentucky practice and found Sharpe easily the best player on the floor but still wonders if that practice performance translates to the game floor.

Didn't really tell me much that I hadn't already heard from him. I mean he says that he would pick at 7 if he were us and now he is us, so maybe that's why you're suggesting listening to this but he didn't blow my mind with any new insites on the players they broke down. I think we have to get better at both starting forward spots without losing the experienced talent we have on our bench (Hart, Nas and Justise) if we want to be a competitive team that the word contender could even be whispered about without being laughed out of the room. I don't see how we do that (unless Joe has a way to add Grant for future picks) without moving back in the draft.

Wow, that's interesting. He'd at least have to had given his insites on this draft and our position in it while interviewing and if you've anounced a hire you have to think you'd be talking to them when considering moves that will impact what he's doing starting in July. He has generally just talked about who players are and his evaluations of them and not who should take them or if trades are happening. So maybe he has an agreement with us and ESPN that he will break down players for their draft coverage but not talk about anything going on around the league on air and lend those things to us.

I guarantee if teams around the league had been talking to this guy about the order of their draft boards, they aren't anymore. I mean, except us.

Hopefully this works out better than Mike Mayock did for the Raiders....

At least he isn't the real gm. But I don't care for Cronin much right now.

Good question.

If he is staying with ESPN until after the draft, that would tend to indicate we are trading out of this draft. Since we also still owe a future 1st as part of the Nance trade...what exactly is a draft/scouting expert supposed to do for the team?

Cronin so smart that if we pick the wrong player, there’s no Fire Cronin chant but Fire Schmitz
It wont matter how it turns out people will be shouting fire Cronin!
Thats just the way people are nowadays.

He'll take on much of what Joe did in his old position.

Hopefully they're planning on keeping him for more than one year. The team is still allowed to acquire picks and make trades.

Wouldn't that depend on whether/when the team is sold? If the team is actually on the market, he won't have much time to make a good impression.

Technically everyone on contract can get let go, Dame included. I don't know how long Schmitz got on his deal, but I don't see this being a make or break move. Certianly has more upside than downside in my opinion.

Maybe we'll stay in the lottery for the foreseeable future and not have to give the pick to Chicago.

It’s as good as gone

look (olshey - tm), I know you think you know something the rest of us don't know, and you may be right. But unless you're willing to be a lot more specific you should just let us speculate and project ideas about what might happen. You're killing the buzz with your vague little reality bombs. There will be several months of buzzkill if what you say will happen, does happen. But we've still got a month to cling to the hope it won't. Stop raining on that parade

How dare people expect highly paid professionals to be competent at their jobs!

he hasn’t even had a full season yet and people are already crying for his firing. Btw the team played their best ball last season post his deadline, so much so that they had to start coming up with injuries to keep guys out.

Yup. Didn't scout Dragan enough to have an opinion but I've disagreed with a lot of his 2nd round level evaluations particularly.

He was a big Iwundu guy in 2017 and Jacob Evans in 2018. Both were fringe NBA players in my eyes.

Everybody is going to be wrong a lot with this stuff
Man... Everyone's had some misses. I don't get coming in here to point out two 2nd round misses four years ago just to say that you had them rated properly. Dude knows his stuff.

Tbf Schmitz doesn’t really shit on prospects and usually looks for the positives. Probably why I like him so much, but also easy to point out his “misses”

Olshey routinely got second round steals. Let's hope Mike is as good.

It was one area that Olshey did well.....trading multiple picks for a 2nd round gem. The only 2nd rounder he owned that he picked that was good was Will Barton. But in ~20 Draft picks, he seemed to almost completely ignore the International portion of the talent pool. A single, solitary scout might have had something to do with that. Schmitz seems much more prepared in that area.

one international scout is pretty common for an nba team. Don’t think anyone has more than two. But yes it’s annoying how he didn’t dip into that market.

I have very limited knowledge anymore about the inner workings of the NBA. I just follow here and on Tweet Tweet but Mike Schmitz is a name i know and have followed. This seems like a really good addition. Almost too good? I'm wondering if there is a bunch of credit owed to Joe and his reputation around the league for this acquisition?

Hello,

I am in the same boat with regards to knowledge of the inner workings.
However the word I gathered after doing a bit of research on this guy is this is a slam dunk/homerun of a hire compared to what we have had in the past.
This gets me really excited for the long term future of the franchise. I hope he sticks around long enough to make a significant impact with his knowledge.
If Joe did help to make this happen, I would consider this his best move this far as GM.
