I'm still keeping an strong eye on Gingrich. He may not win the nomination, but he appears to be doing a credible job of becoming a viable and legit option:

Mr. Gingrich announced that as the Republican nominee he would challenge President Obama to seven Lincoln-Douglas-style debates. "I think I can represent American exceptionalism, free enterprise, the rights of private property and the Constitution, better than he can represent class warfare, bureaucratic socialism, weakness in foreign policy, and total confusion in the economy."

When it came time to answer questions from a panel of journalists, he was asked first about energy, one of those vital subjects that don't tend to yield lively commentary. How would Mr. Gingrich's policies differ from those of the current administration?

Mr. Gingrich launched into a lethal thumbnail description of the Obama administration's energy policy. The president, he said, had gone to Brazil and told the Brazilians he was really glad they were drilling offshore and that he would like America to be their best customer. "The job of the American president," Mr. Gingrich told the panel, "is not to be a purchasing agent for a foreign country—it's to be a salesman for the United States of America."

The former speaker of the House is a dab hand at drawing listeners in, for good reason—he showers them with details, facts and history in a degree no candidate in recent memory has even approached. Audiences have a way of rewarding such trust.......

I challenge Obama to climb Mt McKinley if I get the Republican Nomination!!!

Gingrich can't win, but he's easily the smartest, most concise, and wonkiest of any candidate in the GOP field, and he'd debate circles around Obama as well. I think he just has too much personal baggage to win the GOP nomination, though.

I think a wet paper bag could beat Obama by next fall, FWIW. Blaming everybody but himself isn't going work this time.

Latest CNN poll has newt in a virtual tie wit mit.

Lucky for him he'll face no one anywhere near that strong.

Gingrich would shred him to mincemeat in Lincoln-Douglas style debates. I may never get the opportunity to see that, but I would love to.

We must be thinking of two completely different politicians, both named Newt Gingrich.

Complaining about the debate format = mating call of the loser. Luh-hoo zeh-hurrrr.

McCain did the same whining about "town hall style" and look where that got him.

Or he wants something different for the political process.

Please. There's not a single person voting for or against Obama because of a debate. He could put out the formula to cure cancer, and people would hate that he held onto it until it was politically expedient. He could get crushed by Sarah Palin, and he'd still get voted in by people who like to vote for the (D) next to the name, or for the Hopey McChange-ness of the fresh new campaign.

I mean, look at the "Promises" put out during the last set of debates. It's almost 2012, and:

a) We're still in Iraq (though drawing down and leaving soon, but heavily indebted to a "surge" that then-Senator Obama said "I am not persuaded that 20,000 additional troops in Iraq is going to solve the sectarian violence there. In fact, I think it will do the reverse"),
b) "Now, what I've done throughout this campaign is to propose a net (government budget) spending cut" (Oct. 15, 2008)
c) Is Guantanamo Bay still open for business?

Now, I'm not saying that any of these policies are good or bad or should be acted on. But they're major points he brought up in debates, and no one really cares 4 years later that he flopped, didn't act, or didn't follow his timeline. Those who didn't like him still don't, those who do don't care that he flopped, and people will probably elect him again, for whatever reason.

Tell that to JFK. :)

That said, these GOP debates have sucked to no end. TERRIBLE formats.

He died. 50 years ago. How did the debates go during Vietnam, or post-Watergate, or for Mondale? Ross Perot crushed the debates in 92. All he did was take a few votes from GHWB. Did Kerry do anything in the debates other than say "Swift Boat Veterans are liars?" Did Obama show a stunning foreign policy or economic advantage over McCain, or did everyone who wasn't a right-wing whack job say that they're not voting for a ticket where Palin is a 75-y/o's heartbeat away from President?

Perot was leading both GHW and Clinton in the polls. Then he withdrew form the race.

Look, all I'm saying is that for "most" people, the debates provide a chance to get a bit clearer idea as to where the candidates precisely stand "publically" on various issues; how composed (or even rattled) they appear under a bit of "pressure"; how they defend (or not) their respective positions; what new ideas we may not have heard of that they bring to the table; and so on...

I'm certainly not saying that the debates are a be all, end all. They're a bit superficial, as well. In and of themselves, the debates won't be the final determiner. However, in my opinion, they're still helpful as being part of the process in weeding out the chaff.

That said, I'd still love to see may man Newt take on Obama in said Lincoln-Douglas style debates.

There have been more republican debates this time around than any time I can remember. The formats may suck, and it allows the lefty media to pounce on any miscues. The good news is that there are a lot of candidates, and every one of them has been vetted to an unprecedented degree.

Rick Perry has proven to be horrible in the debate formats. I'm not so sure his performance speaks to how good a president he could be. Not that I'm convinced he'd be good at it.

He has a lot of campaign money to run concise and polished ads. I've seen one a couple times now, and he comes across much better.

My hunch is that he's going to be going head to head against Romney for most of the remaining race. Until/if he runs out of donors' money.

From Newt's daughter. Thought this part was interesting..

....As for my parents' divorce, I can remember when they told me.

It was the spring of 1980.

I was 13 years old, and we were about to leave Fairfax, Va., and drive to Carrollton, Ga., for the summer. My parents told my sister and me that they were getting a divorce as our family of four sat around the kitchen table of our ranch home.

Soon afterward, my mom, sister and I got into our light-blue Chevrolet Impala and drove back to Carrollton.

Later that summer, Mom went to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta for surgery to remove a tumor. While she was there, Dad took my sister and me to see her.

It is this visit that has turned into the infamous hospital visit about which many untruths have been told. I won't repeat them. You can look them up online if you are interested in untruths. But here's what happened:

My mother and father were already in the process of getting a divorce, which she requested.

Dad took my sister and me to the hospital to see our mother.

She had undergone surgery the day before to remove a tumor.

The tumor was benign.

As with many divorces, it was hard and painful for all involved, but life continued.

As have many families, we have healed; we have moved on.

We are not a perfect family, but we are knit together through common bonds, commitment and love.

My mother and father are alive and well, and my sister and I are blessed to have a close relationship with them both.
