Trump threatened if the "lunatic communist" was elected mayor of New York he would end federal aid, send troops, even possibility of denaturalizing and deporting Mamdani was floated.

I'm being 100% serious, but I think the main reason Trump liked Mamdani is because Mamdani has a very pretty wife. Trump measures things with his tiny mushroom. Vance's wife, pretty. Rubio's wife, pretty. Ted Cruz's wife, not pretty, Ted has no position in his cabinet.

A bit more to the point, Trump still owns extensive real estate in New York City and is known to cut corners. Maybe kissing Mamdani's ass he hopes the new administration won't look too closely.
