What are the chances of an astroid actually hitting earth? Never gonna' happen!
 
17,000 miles is damned close. It's less than 1/10th the way to the moon.

Meteor crater is 1 mile across, the meteor hit about 50,000 years ago. A comet or meteor exploded above Tunguska in the early 1900s, and it was huge.

Maybe Astronomers were too busy watching the south, when they should have been watching the west!
