Anybody use the Nike+ with your iPhone at the gym? A friend of mine from Nike gave me one and I just got it all set up to use. At the gym, I usually do the stairs and elyptical, not running on the tread mill. Will this be useful if I'm not running?

No, it will be worse than useless, it is likely it will kill you. If I were you I'd hit the phone with a large hammer until you are sure that that app no longer works.

Nike+ is designed to work for running. It won't work correctly on a stairmaster or elliptical machine.

I use the Nike+GPS app all the time. I use it for both running outdoors (GPS) and indoors on the elliptical. If you set it for "indoors", and put your phone in your pocket, it works. Not 100% accurate, but close enough to the #'s the elliptical spits out IMO. It uses the motion sensor in your phone to sense how many steps you've taken.

I don't think the basic Nike+ does... I used to use it for marathon training... but after about 500 miles the battery went dead and I found out I'd have to buy another whole new device because you can't replace it. Just one of the reasons I hate Apple.

I just uploaded the Nike GPS ap to my phone and it asked to sync with Nike+, so I think I will just use Nike GPS. I did see the indoor function, but I do the stairs in hoop shorts, no pockets son! I don't know what I'm going to do.

Now all you have to do is buy the new sensor for like $10.

Basically how it calculates your distance is it takes the amount of steps you take and multiplies it by the length of your stride. As far as ellipticals are concerned, the Nike+ipod would have no affect because it measures everything by the amount of steps you take and since you don't take any steps on an elliptical, it wouldn't work.

Gotcha! And 2 miles on the stairs would just measure like 2 miles on a treadmill, even though it is tougher?

You could try using the distance meter on the elliptical?

I remember the days when we would all just simply run.

I'm getting old. Even I've resigned myself to the treadmills or elliptical on the non-hoop days.

^ you never commented on why WE never fight on here like you do with everybody else!
