It must be tough being 2 decades older than your teammates.

Am I the only one who thinks this is a little weird? Or is this a normal thing with some NBA players?

Here is a pretty interesting and old article about Kobe's loner nature.

Kobe Bryant's A Superstar Who Doesn't Quite Fit In--With His Team, L.A. Or Even This Country

[...]

Kobe agrees and extends that concept to his relationship with all his teammates. "We may not be close off the court, but I've got their back on the court no matter what," he says. Before the playoffs began, the Lakers held a team meeting to try to ease tensions and get the other players to give Bryant more support. "We look at all the attention and hype he gets and think he shouldn't be making all those mistakes," said Laker forward Rick Fox. "But we forget he's just a kid. We just sort of left him hanging this season, an island by himself, and that's going to stop. He wants to win as much as anyone else, and he deserves our support."

[...]

Kobe says he's a loner by nature. At the Forum he dresses separately in a back room; on the road, he sticks to his hotel room, filling his day with repeat breakfasts--eggs, potatoes and pancakes morning, noon and night--and pay-per-view movies. Bryant is also something of a misfit among the young black men who populate the NBA, the result, he says, of having been raised first in Italy and then in an affluent white suburb.

I would like to see Greg smile for once.

Maybe Roy should sneak up and tickle him?

Man, why did you have to draw attention to this, now were going to get the usual, "Greg Oden isn't liked by his team mates" , "he's depressed" "he doesnt cheer for his team-mates" " he doesnt smile" rinse and repeat, psycho-analyzed bullshit from the few "forum-shrinks" we have on here.

Bottom line is, It's gotta be one tough situation to be in, being the top pick, getting all the attention, etc taking a year off of NBA and then trying to come back in and make a huge splash.... so much expectation, and not a lot of room for error....in most peoples minds.

In the first 6 minutes of our last game (TOR) I saw him smile a cuople of times. I think he is finally starting to lessen the pressure on himself.

Haha, if that's directed at me- read your avatar, duder.

I'd say your post represents more of a psychoanalysis than mine.

Yeah, I think the internet beat me to this story.

100% agree with this. I actually watched the replay of the game on Com(evil)cast last night just so I could see the beginning of the game when it looked like Greg was having fun.

Wasn't talkin' to you man, but no big-deal, I read my avatar every time I post. :)

And I wasn't psychoanalyzing anyone, but merely explaining my disdain for the guys that come on here trying to tell us how Oden's a head-case, over and over and over again. It's tiring, because you know it's going to happen on this thread once they catch wind of it.

Well that is good to know. Kobe was like that too.

Yep. That was my point.

From the article about Kobe:
Indeed, asked if he's happy, Bryant shrugs and says, "I guess, maybe. Not really." Then he adds rather poignantly, "I really don't believe in happiness."

Now that's a nice thing to say.

I'm not normally one to rip Canzano...maybe I just don't pay close enough attention to him...but this article is idiotic. As if minutes played are little gold starts handed out by the teacher and the rules have to be exactly the same for everyone. I get there can be damage from a double standard...but this is a bad example.

There is only 1 supreme goal. It is not to make the playoffs this season. It is to win an NBA championship and that can't realistically happen until an upcoming season (unless something amazing happens).

What do we need in order for that to happen? I think we need Oden to develop as quickly as possible. How will that happen? By playing with the starting group against the best possible players. Starting Pryz...who I have loved as a player for years...might maybe help you win more now -maybe...but starting Oden is working towards the long-term success of the team. He's already learning to hold the ball up more, keep his hands up straighter, not hang on the rim (as much), how to push just enough with the off arm to create a little space without fouling, etc...you can already see glimpses of progress.

I think the problem with overreacting fans and commentators is that everyone is so focused on short term goals and "what have you done this week" analysis, that they totally lose sight of the larger goal. Thankfully I think Paul Allen, Larry Miller, KP, and Nate all get it. I'm very glad they're steering the ship!

Thank you and good night.

I am OK with everyone saying Canzano piece is trash, but are you guys saying that Oden is not the type that prefers to keeps to himself, not socialize, etc?

Who really cares if he prefers to keep to himself?

The words "witch hunt" come to mind.

The fans.

People around here discuss everything Blazers related and I don't see why they wouldn't talk about Oden's temperament and personality. The same way people have being discussing the way Bryant handle himself throughout his career.

Sorry for not getting it, but where is the "witch hunt"?

Canzano, not fans. It's not terribly important that he keeps to himself. It's par for the course for Canzano to bring up something thats minor, and make it into a bigger deal than necessary (and then some fans act like it matters).

That's why I don't really care if Canzano's piece is trash but we can't deny the fact that Oden has a loner nature and IMO similar to a young Kobe.

The OP is not about Canzano's article, it's about Oden's personality and that's what I think is worth talking about.

I am not saying that this is the most relevant thing to discuss, but definitely has it's importance and it will find room in any active message-board among Blazers fans.

Only because he's making it out to be something more than just someone who likes to be alone. Whats next, Brandon Roy likes giving his girlfriend dutch-ovens?

Let me tell you one more time. I don't care about Canzano, I don't read his stuff and no NBA fan should accept a sports writer opinion as the truth.

Now having an important cog in your team that has a personality to be a loner is pretty interesting and should be put in the picture when you are trying to build a team to win it all. Knowing how to handle him and his relationship with the teammates and help building bridges should be a top priority to the Blazers staff.

I think Rick Fox put it in a pretty good way in the article I just posted: "But we forget he's just a kid. We just sort of left him hanging this season, an island by himself, and that's going to stop. He wants to win as much as anyone else, and he deserves our support."

The same goes to any poster around here. Even if you don't agree with the opinion of the OP this is a relevant topic and worth the discussion.

I'm kind of a loner by nature and from my perspective it might not mean a thing. Maybe he just likes to clear his head and analyze how he feels he did before he wants to talk about it. It doesn't mean he dislikes anybody.

He's had so much pressure from the hype and has felt like he was disappointing people. He had one of his best games against Toronto and looked like he was having fun. Obviously I don't know Greg but he seems to be a pretty upbeat guy by nature and it's not like he's on a team with a bunch of party animals who want to go out all the time. I think he's just working through his own expectations of himself and finding his role on the team.

What Spud said.

I think it is an interesting glimpse into Greg's personality. So, the guy needs a little privacy, or a little quiet time to unwind, or whatever. The described behavior in no way indicates anything negative. Just yesterday, my wife was giving me a hard time for not being sociable enough (by her standards) at parties -- and there is no question what a great human being I am, so there ya go. :ghoti:

Like I said before, Canzano is a jerkoff! So Greg likes a little privacy. I won't go into this too much, but lets just say there aren't a lot of extra seats on the plane. Maybe some vets have the big captains chairs and he can't fit on the couches with the little Euros. Maybe he has respect for the vets and would never ask a player who has put his time into the league to move just so he can sit in a big chair. This is the kind of crap that bugs me. These guys have no idea what they are talking about! This is the kind of crap that will make Greg leave in 4 years. (Big fish in a little pond kinda shit) Fuck Canzano!!!!!!!!

+1 This is exactly what I think about Canzano!
