I feel like this is a real option this off-season.
I believe we have his bird rights and can sign him for more than any other team. He will surely want the bag at this stage of his career. I can’t see him going to a shit team for more money though..
Neil has said we have “4 of 5 starters under contract”.
What are your guys thoughts on this? potential targets?
Apologies if this is incorrect but I don’t think it is

Depends on what they wanna do with CJ. I think one of those two will be gone. If Powell leaves, a sign and trade makes the most sense because the majority of the league will be over the cap.

Impossible. He's BYC. Means he counts for 10 million outgoing but whatever he signs for incoming. So if he signs for 20, we need to match salaries knowing that he only counts for 10 million outgoing for us.

Difficult - yes, but not impossible.
The constraints on the S&T with the fact that Portland will likely be in the tax make it such that the effort isn't worth the reward.

If they don't trade CJ, they likely lose Powell due to his contract status.

So instead of Powell + whatever you can get for CJ, you would just run back CJ AND Powell would leave for nothing. #epicfail

The constraints on the S&T and Portland being over the cap are what make it almost impossible.

why do I already think the team will suck this season?

We need to keep Norm.

Does Powell even want to be here, and does he even fit for the Blazers in any role?

I don’t think he’ll be coming back unless CJ is traded and Olshey matches an offer and Norm starts at SG. I don’t want to see a 6’3” SF in the starting lineup again this year. Dame, CJ, and Powell are all 6’3” and under and it obviously doesn’t work defensively at all. Coaching can only do so much when 3/5 of your line-up are that short regardless of wing span.

Somebody will pay him $20-22 million as a starting SG and he won’t have to try and defend much taller players because CJ and Dame are worse on defense. That’s too much to match for a 6th Man who isn’t a shot creator.

I think he was a rental, didn’t work out, and it’s best for both parties if he moves to another team. He just doesn’t fit, didn’t really play that well here and his flaws as a SF would show even more in 2021-22. I like him in the correct role, but it isn’t as starting SF in Portland for me.

If Powell walks we have no money for a good replacement. For me there is only one way forward and this is to keep Norm since we can go over the cap to do that and trade CJ for a starting forward. To lose Powell for nothing and have someone like Derrick Jones starting next year I don't like it. And we have seen how much flawed is that Dame-CJ backcourt after so many years and so many failures together.

Because you have a defeatist mindset towards the team. I have that problem with finance. No matter how hard i try , i never get ahead. I let my mindset put me in a hole. I need to change that, you as well towards the Blazers.

Powell CAN, and does , create his own shot. He's one of the best penetrators on the team. He's a good 3 pt. threat, even though it left him, for the most part, during the Nuggets Series. He plays good defense, and plays much bigger than his 6-3 size would suggest. We need him IMO.

Agreed. But I don't think he re-signs unless the SG position is open for him.

This is a popular theory based on nothing.

I'm NOT saying it's wrong, but it's just guesswork. Neither Powell nor his agent has said any such thing.

However, I do agree that trading CJ maximizes our chances of resigning Powell.

My theory, also based on nothing, is that the new coach improves our chances of resigning Powell.

That’s basically what I said, although I don’t think Powell fits with CJ on the roster and along with Dame the defense with those three starting was awful. Those three are too short to be a contender playing major minutes together. That was already proven against Denver.

Quick essentially voiced those same concerns about Norm..... heck, it didn't even sound like he thought he'd come back if CJ was gone.

sure, but Quick straight up said he didn't know, and hasn't talked to Norm - it was his "feeling".

The sad truth for those of us with over 50 posts in the last 48 hours is that the next thing up is the draft, which isn't for a MONTH. Most trades won't happen until that time.

If Powell walks with no compensation of any kind it will be a devastating blunder in a series of epic fuck ups by Olshey. It is imperative we either re-sign him which is preferred or at least get something in a S/T

I mean why spoil an epic hot streak by Neil of fucking things up?

Obviously if it's the only option I would want a sign and trade before letting Norm walk for nothing but even a sign and trade would be a real shame. Powell is a great fit next to Dame. He is a really good defender and can both take the ball to the hole and make the three at a great clip. He doesn't need the ball or even need to be on with his shot to make the kind of difference this team needs made.

So I want Norm signed and obviously CJ traded but even if you have decided to give Dame and CJ another chance, I think you sign Powell. You have to know that if the Dame/CJ back court is given new life by Chauncey... Norman Powell will be worth more in a trade at the deadline than he will be in a sign and trade now. More likely we'll see that even with a new head coach Dame's and CJ's redundant strengths and more importantly weaknesses won't work together and we will be able to trade CJ for a position of need and plug and play Norm at the starting 2.

Assets who are worth as much as Powell walking out the door for nothing is not an option for Olshey. Powell could leave no matter what Portland offers, but there’s been absolutely no indication of that out of his camp. There’s no likely way to replace him this year, sign and trades are difficult to say the least, and Portland’s market is what it is.

The simplest answer is Portland pays up — market price and more. CJ traded or not. Powell signs with the Blazers for $$$ and playing with Lillard and the rest — CJ traded or not. Again, he COULD choose to walk.

If the Blazers want SNAFU and FUBAR, they let him walk … and then justify it to Lillard. This is a tipping point.

I think Powell goes for whoever gives him the most money. As long as we don't max him I'm fine with a big deal, maybe 60% of the max.
