The Oregonian has the news from Portland Police today that tasty but shabbily-decorated North Portland barbecue place Yam Yam's was possibly a money-laundering front for a "coke kingpin."

North Portland resident James Ray "Lonnie" Yoakum is charged with running a $300,000 a month cocaine operation in town, using Yam Yam's to make the money look legit. After using wiretaps and other surveillance, police arrested Yoakum with $11,000 in cash on his person. Yoakum told authorities that he was a cook at Yam Yams and officers found $60,000 more in a safe at the restaurant. That's a lot of $5 jambalayas.

Investigators also accuse Yoakum's sons of dirty business. Yoakum's 19-year-old son is accused of having a hand in a Northeast gun fight that left a rival gang member wounded on Killingsworth and the other is accused of robbing two California medical marijuana clinics.

While the Yoakum family waits in jail, the fate of Yam Yams and their delicious savory bbq sauce remains unclear.

I'm telling you, that these frozen yogurt stores popping up everywhere are also money laundering fronts for Korean Sex Slave Prostiuttion.

If you're getting it of a Korean sex slave that ain't yogurt.

Can't say I've ever had Yam Yam's. Russel St. BBQ is the best BBQ I've ever had that wasn't my own...brisket to die for.

For the BBQ food right?

You ever try Campbell's on Powell?

I have. Worst BBQ I've ever had. The meat was as dry as a bone and the sauce uninspiring. I haven't found a decent BBQ place in Portland. I've heard some good things about Russells, but haven't been there.

When ABM lived in Atlanta and I visited, he took me to some rib places that were so good they should be illegal.

The best BBQ I've ever had were (for pork) Pierce's BBQ Pit in Williamsburg, VA and the Salt Lick (for brisket and sausage) just outside of Austin.

However, for PDX, Yam Yam's was pretty damn good.

Yam Yam nOooooooo!

They have the best sides.

However, the King of great BBQ is Cannon's Rib Express on 33rd.

Was I the only one who decided to make barbecue because of this thread? Baby back ribs and Blazers game.....droool....

As the person who started this thread I think it's only fair that I get a pound of those ribs and a quart of sauce.

Let me know when I can pick them up.

Seriously, earlier today and without prompting, my wife decided that she would pick up barbecue tonight because it's the first Blazer game of the year. Luckily we live in Denver, so I don't need to worry about what she may have done to score a little Bolivian Marching Powder.

With a little Bolivian Marching Powder in her she could almost make the drive to Yam Yam's and back in time for tip off.

Russel Street is pretty damn good. I like Yam Yams as well, but Russel Street actually had better sides IMO. That and some of their specials are pretty damn tasty. Like the Smoked Meat Loaf.

I can't believe no one's come up with:

"Because they put a secret addictive chemical in it to make you crave it fortnightly, smartass!"

From tha Roota to tha Toota is a Field Mob album. It's slang for oral. Dunno why a BBQ joint would use that as their slogan.

LOL! I totally missed the "So I Married An Axe Murderer" angle. I was focused on the "Taxi" episode where Latka Gravas makes his family home cookie recipe, which turns out to be wildly popular, but has cocaine as one of the ingredients.

I think it's safe to say the fine members of "Field Mob" did not invent that saying.
