As far as I understand, he is extension eligible right now at a maximum 4 yr, ~65 mil contract.

Considering Rich Paul's history with other clients, he probably is going to advise Nurk to wait even if we offered him a deal. Also, I don't see our FO beating down the doors to get him this kinda $ given the current market for centers who can't shoot.

But I think there might be some value to locking him down earlier and not let him go to UFA next summer when all we have on the books will be Dame/CJ/Powell.

How high would you go?

Here are other UFA who might potentially be available next summer:

I doubt he'd get much more than 15-17 per year. His health, and his softness hasn't done him any favors. It might change with this season, but it also might be a(nother) season where he misses a big chunk of games.

I think 15-17 is a stretch. He's currently the 14th highest paid C at 12 mil. I don't really see him as being too much higher than 10 if you rank all the Cs by talent or impact. There are outliers like Jarrett Allen, but he was a RFA and CLE was stupid/desperate.

I would throw him a 4yr/50 mil deal filled with options and incentives for staying healthy to see if he bites. Worst case scenario, his contract is tradeable if we part ways with Dame down the road

I'm kinda worried about the slim pickings in FA next year. Hard to see where we can get a C upgrade for Nurk outside of a trade. And we don't even have Collins waiting in the wings now.

Maybe extend him for 4 years at 12 million. But if he wants more $$ I would wait to see how he plays this year. Can he last a full year without getting hurt?

I wouldn’t give him more than 2 or 3 years

I'd offer him 45/3 or 56/4. Final year TO on both.

The Blazers would be smart to at least be in discussions for a new deal. But the Blazers need protections in place as well. in any new deal.

I wouldn't offer him 15-17, but I'd wait to see what he gets knowing full well I'd peak at about 13 for him. His health is just too much of a question.

I'd lock Nurk up like we did Norm...get a discount for that 4th year ...you can always trade a contract like that if it's not too huge...I consider Nurk a core piece and keeping him would be the smart move

What is the timeline for offering him an extension? Having flexibility if a trade is still on the table is pretty important right now, so that's definitely a factor. Somewhere between 12-15 is probably a reasonable place to start though.

Rich Paul is anti small market.

Id bet Nurk signs a short-term deal and bounces.

Since he's on the final year of his contract, there is no deadline per se-- he can get an extension anytime before season's end. If he had more years left, the deadline would be the start of the reg. season (OCT 19).

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Awesome. I wouldn't be in a huge rush then. Just tell Nurk that we heard what he said about being here if Dame is here.

If this is the case, it's reasonable to wait until the trade deadline - since his short term deal on a reasonable contract can be a great trade chip if a real opportunity comes.

all of you are looking at this from portland trail blazers perspective (which is understandable), but nurk absolutely has no incentive to sign contract extension, unless its 20+ per year (which would be tough to pass on), otherwise he will just play out the season and hope that he has great one and therefore gets that 20+ per year offer... nurk can afford to bet on himself and those offers youre suggesting (12-15 per year), nurk can get them any time and he doesnt need to improve at all

his current contract is 12 per year and one can see why it would be idiotic to sign 12-15 per year contract extension, when he can bet on himself and in a contract season and with chauncey billups, its a very smart move

also, you cant give powell 20 per year and give nurk 12-15 per year, when powell isnt better than nurk, neither is he more impactful than nurk, its common sense

2018-2019 Nurk, sure. All other years, Powell has at least as good or higher VORP than Nurk. The problem with Nurk was, so far, availability. In 6 years Powell has played more games than Nurk did in 8. I can understand why Nurk will expect a contract in the $20m/year range and I can understand why the Blazers have no incentive to commit to this - that early.

the thing here is this: nurk can afford to bet on himself, because like i said, he can get 12-15 per year anytime and it would be foolish to sign contract extension like that, while the blazers cant really afford to let nurk hit the free agency (especially if he has a great season) as he would become unrestricted free agent, meaning blazers would have no control over the situation and anything can happen in free agency

blazers have no reason to give nurk 20 per year right now, they can offer him lets say 17 per year mid season and hope that nurk signs it and is not willing to bet on himself, but then we have to be realistic, what are the chances that nurk (barring season ending injury) doesnt get 17 per year from some other team in free agency... my guess is that the blazers will offer him something like that and hope he signs it, but if he doesnt, they will raise the offer to prevent him entering free agency or will raise the offer in free agency... a lot of it will depend on how nurk plays the season, if he has a great one, hes gonna get 20+ per year

Given nurks injury history, I dont think he would completely dismiss a 50 mil extension.

And centers dont get paid in today's nba. Wings and guards do. Richaun Holmes is a reasonable comp to Nurk and check out what he got this summer as a UFA. Serviceable starters get around 10-12 mil.

he absolutely would

thats 2 mil more than his current contract and nurk is better player than three years ago and he would be even better had he not missed season and a half on leg & wrist brakes

that slowed him down, but im pretty sure, if healthy this season, hell build up on 2018/2019 season... hes fully healthy, chauncey billups is high on him, contract season, hes gonna breakout this season

Max I'd offer Nurk is around 4 years 50 million.... he has major injury history and centers are often played off the court in the playoffs. If he bets on himself and has a huge season props to him I'd be ok paying him more in that case. I don't want the team stuck with a bad contract.

Roco is the more debatable scenario... his position is much more scarce. But he also has some injury history (not as much though) and his offense has been poor, and one on one defense sometimes overrated. I'd still probably offer him a bit more than Nurk.

Simons I don't even know I'd offer an extension, he had promise as a bench player last year but I don't want the team stuck with an Allen Crabbe contract. I'm not sure he is going to be more than an end of the bench backup, but if he figures it out he has good starter upside.

I'd offer Nurk 3 years 45M: first year 14M guaranteed, second year 15M guaranteed and third year 16M team option. I'd offer RoCo the same three year extension.

Well this cannot happen since the max he can get right now is not more than something like 16 on average for a 4 year contract. I think if we offered him a max extension he would jump all over it. Now if we do 50/4 years who knows. Maybe he again breaks his leg and he gets less than 10M next year on a one year deal or whatever as nobody will trust him after another lost year. Even during last contract negotiations people were hyping him up saying he would cost a lot and then he signed for 48 with a lot of unguaranteed money.

If Nurk had a second serious injury this year, he might not make a total of $10m for the rest of his career. I think that could be one incentive to lock up $30-40m.

There’s a lot of variables that going on with Nurk and his extension. From the blazers perspective they may not want to risk resigning an injury prone center who also deal with mental mistakes. But they want want to resign him so they can trade him
in case Dame leave to recoup some value. If not, hopefully Nurk break out into a star he’s meant to be under Billups. But from Nurk perspective he may want to prove he is one of the best centers in the league. And he wouldn’t want to be stuck here if Dame took off after the season. He may still want to resign to what he can get before he lose millions of dollars if he get hurt again.
RoCo on the other hand we should absolutely resign him. Neil have struggled getting a decent forward so let keep the one that we do have

Powell didn’t get 20 per year

my guess is nurk wont sign extension, unless its at least 20 per year, otherwise he will bet on himself

of course, im not nurk, nor his agent, so who knows... blazers will try to do whats best for them and nurk & his agent will try to do whats best for nurk

zach collins just got 3/22 (2nd year partially guaranteed, 3rd year non-guaranteed, total 10 mil guaranteed money)

hes bigger red flag than nurk when it comes to health and hes not as good as nurk

Personally i don't sign anything with Nurk until i see if he can be coached. Obviously Stotts was accused of not being able to coach him. He obviously fell out of favor in Denver. What happens when Billups has to bench this guy because of his lazy passes and "Going Rogue"? Ever notice Nurk always seems to miss layups? Ever notice Nurk can't dunk the ball?
Ever notice Nurk is always injured?

No i don't give Nurk another dime until i see he can stay healthy and he can follow directions of a coach. They will know what they have this year by the trade deadline.
