Oden can't start running for 5 more months?!?

Surely someone recorded the game and can tell us what he said. (And I sure as hell am not jumping all over him....I really feel for he guy.)

Go Blazers

Check out my above post........ after I read the original post, I watched it.

The last thing Oden is going to do is Rush back when he isn't fully ready. If he rushes back and is injured again he probably wont get an extension from us an will lose millions on the FA market if he goes the route of accepting our 1 year offer and waiting to test the market tell after next season.

He'll be ready for the start of next season all right - in November 2012.

It sounds depressing, but we forget that the surgery was done only ("only") five months ago. It's easy to get it confused with the previous surgery, from which he was rehabbing (and just about to return) when they found this further problem. It's supposed to take about a year to recover from the surgery he had, so ten months is actually ahead of schedule!

So we'll get to see about 7 weeks of dominance out of him before the world ends? Talk about depressing...

The issue with MF is you have to immobilize the joint long enough for the scar tissue to develop. It's not like a ligament repair where they want you moving it as soon as you can. My biggest hope is that he alters his training routines so he gets leaner rather than bigger. I don't say this about many players, but he's strong enough. He's verging on Gary Trent territory, where his muscles begin to slow him down rather than help him.

Get lean, get light and work on quickness. It's the combination of size, strength and speed that made him such an amazing prospect. If he came to camp (whenever that is) in the 260s, I'd be thrilled.

Wasn't he almost 270 when he came to camp after we drafted him?

That's not really a fair comparison as he had MF surgery before camp began. I liked him at his summer league weight.

When did he have his 2nd MF? Was it November?

Anyways, I'd rather he not rush into coming back. He's not 100% needed to start the season, and with the chances of the season being cancelled or shortened, I'd rather he be taking his time and doing it right. Get down to 260ish, make sure his shoes are the best they can be (cushioning, etc) and work on conditioning and his wind.

Dude always looked tired when he was playing. I'd rather he miss half of next season (assuming there is a whole season) because he's getting ready. Included in that is scrimmaging with the team I mean. But get himself into game shape, mental and physical. And I'm now in the boat of hiring a big man coach solely for him and LaMarcus (maybe even Johnson too). Don't know who would be available, but if I'm Paul Allen, I ask Hakeem or Kevin McHale or ? how much money they want and then double it.

That's the scary thing about GO: He hasn't yet been in basketball shape with this team. We haven't seen him at 100%. And at 80% he's had flashes of dominance.

In my mind, it's another Walton equation. Sure he may break down, but if he has a stretch of health, there's no limit to where he can take you.

And I completely agree with either McHale or Dream as coaches. McHale has the best low post footwork in the history of the NBA and Hakeem did wonders for Dwight's game this past summer.

You don't think it's strange MGB that he isn't even at the point where he can run yet? In fact, he won't even be at that point for 5 months? That's not weird?

I have nothing to do with his rehab so I have no idea what the time lines are for anything. I do know if he said a earlier time and he wasn't doing whatever by that time he'd be attacked just like he is from this casual interview during the game when he's probably paying more attention to the game.

I'm watching the replay on NBATV right now and he said it would be at least 5 months before he was running. However the context he meant was "running playing basketball". It doesn't mean he can't jog right now.

Brilliant, and so true. We haven't seen nothing yet, literally I know, but its scary to think how dominate we could be. And I think that's why everyone is so upset, they've been teased to the brink.

Exactly, it's so damn easy to take things out of context, that's why I don't believe anything I hear in the media.

Can't wait to see G.O. "Up and Running." Get him a dream coach please poppa PA. I'm thinking McHale, he's got love for the Blazers. It would be so pimp to have an ex-head coach as your position coach!

So it's fair to say "running on a basketball court" ?

That is still ridiculous and terrible news.

Yeah, let's rush him back because fans know better.

No. Running in this context essentially means playing basketball. If I'm going to get a run in it means I'm going to play basketball.

doesn't "running" to baskeball players also mean = "five on five, full-court bball"?

WTF? I seriously think that dude is made of glass. I'm starting to lean toward the side of blaming KP for that draft blunder. Seriously, if you go back, I didn't care either way. I thought Durant had just as much superstar potential as Oden.

You guys are crazy.

It will be five months before he's back in Practice, Active; Running, Jumping, Playing D and going for it. That's when he'll be ready to put in work and get into game shape. That's what I'm hearing and it sounds about right to me. If he's back in action January 2012 roaring to go I'll be stoked and the Blazers will be on fire.

Call my Crazy Mick, but I'd rather have Batum/Wallace/ and a questionable Superstar in G.O. than Durant by himself.

Well, even if it is only being able to run in 5 months, that only put's him at mid-august. He said himself that he won't be ready to go and back playing till at least November.

I don't really get the freaking out in here about this. Sounds about right to me.... plus with the lockout looming, that will give him another couple months to recover if needed.

"Greg Oden spent a fair portion of his Thursday morning on a treadmill at the Trail Blazers practice facility, with a towel around his neck, running." Clownzano

It's almost bizarre to hear a rehab update from Oden. Whereas other injury-prone athletes still produced memories on the court, Oden has only played 82 games in his four years with Portland. (For the sake of comparison, the much-mocked Sam Bowie played 76 games in his rookie season.) Oden can't be counted on to contribute anything because he has not yet shown the ability to stay healthy, so what does his rehab even mean? Is he a basketball player or a hypothetical?

This is a sad state of affairs, but it's the ugly truth of Oden's career. Updates like this one only serve to remind us that Oden is perpetually months away from seeing a basketball court. Don't call him a bust or cautionary tale, because he hasn't played enough to provide evidence for either claim. He's a living spectre.

OUCH.

Not only does the guy constantly get injured, but he also seems to be a very slow healer.

The good news is that no team is going to throw much money at him, IMO. The bad news is this may mean Greg accepts the Q.O. and plays for an unrestricted offer in the summer of 2012.
