It's been my experience that vegetarians are usually healthier than meat-eaters.

If you don't get complete amino acids being a vegetarian is no guarantee of a healthful diet. If I recall Walton wasn't doing it quite right, he was very protein and calcium deficient.

It depends on how careful the vegetarian is to get proteins and various vitamins that meats have an abundance of. If that care is taken, a vegetarian diet is fine.
 
We thought this thing would heal a little sooner and it's not healing as fast as we thought or that recovery is not as fast as we thought it would be.

As for Webster, keep in mind that by most reasonable standards, 6'8" is a pretty big dude. That sort of size places a lot of stress on the bones, which may well affect recovery.
 
Equally annoying is the Martell Webster situation. How does a guy miss a whole season just because his ankle is bothering him??

As far as Oden, I think Nate may be simply making sure that all the fucking idiots out there who questioned Greg's heart and work ethic, now realize that the reason he is not playing is because he can't run very well, not because he just "decided not to play yet". Nate maybe over compensating for his previous remarks. He has to realize that most fans hang on every word.

Call me out in person, not like this. From the public record, Oden is cleared by doctors to play by his own words, and he even said he needs to "suck it up" because the end of the year is near.

That would be everyone who who is stupid enough to question a man's integrity. There are only two reasons why 99.9% of NBA players would not play due to an injury. Either they can't or they think by playing they would make things worse. Do you think so lowly of Greg that he would let his teammates down like that. You are basically saying to him that he is not a man. It is the worse thing you can say about an athlete. That is idiotic to me.

But this guy has had a string of injuries, with the wrist, the knee, the ankle, and now his other knee. I thought he was just starting to come on too. But I'd like to see what he can do in the next 3 years.

It's not too uncommon for big men to get hurt. Take a look at Shaq's career, or Alonzo Mourning's, or Ewing who missed 50 games his first 2 years

I've said nothing of the above in any of my posts, I haven't questioned his integrity, and I'll be sure to remember your insult in the future for me merely pointing out the Oden, by his own words, said that it was up to him as when he'd return.
 
Greg played with a broken hand. I think we can agree you need to be able to move up and down the court to contribute.

I was only commenting on you previous post about Joel. Continue to call me a "F*****G idiot" for pointing out that Oden said that he is cleared to play medically. Seems like a pretty firm line drawn in the sand against a fellow Blazer fan, but I guess you're an Oden fan first?

I am not calling you out specifically at all. Like I said I have no idea what you posted. I am simply calling out those who jump to conclusions and question a man's integrity. Do you think i am wrong here? Should his integrity be challenged based on a quote? Shoudn't we wait for some facts for a change. I think it is time that we all take a step back before we jump on a message board and start crucifying all these players for every little thing.
I guess I should stay off the internet. I don't get it. I don't understand the constant negativity. Not just this site, but everywhere. Radio as well. There seems to be no balance. People take enjoyment in tearing the players down.

I've said it before on this board and I'll say it again: Portland needs a new trainer. Jay Jensen seems to be having trouble keeping this team healthy. At the end of the day, that's the trainer's job. Questions:

Why was Martell brought back so early that he re-fractured the foot in less than 5 minutes of action?

Why was Blake brought back so early that he reinjured his shoulder fighting through one screen?

Why has a day-to-day injury to Oden kept him out 2+ weeks? At some point, don't you have to explore more than "rest" for the injury?

Why the total uncertainty on how to handle Roy's talus bone thing a few years ago? That was a total circus and I'm actually shocked it hasn't come back.

In the past five years, here are the players who have missed major time for this team with serious injuries: Joel, Oden, Roy, LMA, Webster, Blake, Damon, Zach, Miles. Pretty much *everyone* who gets decent minutes! And probably more who I'm not remembering right now. I don't feel like other NBA teams have had this much injury news this consistently for the last five years or so. Yes there is the occasional Elton Brand or Bynum type injury. But this has happened to almost every one of our rotation players for five years. Either the conditioning is not enough or the treatment is not enough. Maybe both. Something is wrong with the Blazers and injuries. And while I'm willing to chalk some of that up to bad luck, at some point, it's got to be Jensen's fault. This is his job. And he's failing.

The answer to the bold why question can probably be answered by the previous two why questions. I don't know if you intended it to be funny, but you kind of answered your own question.

As to Roy, most of the uncertainty was from fans and the media, seems the Blazers have dealt with the injury quite well. If they had explored more than rest for that who knows if he'd even be playing now.

I can't quote the article directly, and I don't have the link, but the NYTimes recently stated that eating meat is the second most dangerous thing for your health after smoking. Americans have a very difficult time accepting this fact, and the message has been very slow to get through.
 
I hear about how NBA players dine out in restaurants on the road, and wonder how good their diet really is. Diet, is of course, extremely important to an athlete for an athlete to keep their body operating optimally under such high stress conditions. I also hope that they are giving these guys top quality vitamin and mineral supplements. It seems like a no brainer that they would be, but who knows.

I guess knowing when to come back is tricky in sports. How could Martell know for sure the limits of his foot until he tried it going full force? He could have re-injured it in practice if he had gone full force there, but it seems they decided to let him test it in a game.

"Vegetarians" don't have to be all that careful in their diet - at least no more "careful" than those that eat a high portion of their calories as meat - as meat heavy diets create their own, different and more severe problems with low nutrient levels.

The confusion over vegetarian diets occurs because so many "vegetarians" don't eat all that many vegetables. Deep colored vegetables are where the vitamins are, and protien too.

Many so-call vegetarians are actually "grainarians/dairyarians".

I regularly remind folks that you can eat chips, sodas, ice cream and donuts - and still call yourself a vegetarian.

Vegetarian - as defined commonly - does not equal healthy. "Vegans" are more likely to be closer to a healthy diet, just from the reduction of a large souce of dietary fat in most diets - dairy. But, even vegans can have what is effectively a "junk-food" diet.

The absolute key to a healthy diet - for vegetarians, vegans or meat eater or whatever - is consuming large quantities of vegetables.

TrueHoop has had several articles about how the Cheesecake Factory is the most popular restaurant among NBA players. The nutritional quality of food there is crap. The second most popular places are steakhouses. Huge slabs of heavily marbled meat. White potatoes (the nutritional cellar among veggies), drowned in butter and cream. If they bother with veggies they are covered in cream/cheese. Again, crap food.

As for suplements - the pill pushing industry would like you to think you can take pills to make up for a poor diet. It hasn't worked. It doesn't work. It won't work. Notice how new pills keep coming out. They keep discovering new "essential" nutrients.

You cannot extract all the important vitamins, minerals, micronutrients, etc. from quality foods. Pills are insurance against occasional low levels. They cannot be a long-term souce of nutrients.

Either the players eat a healthy diet, or they don't. Most don't.

"I don't think we have played against him (Oden) yet," Gregg Popovich said before the game.

"I might be wrong, but I think I'm correct. This is his second year in the league, right? We haven't played against him yet so they are not really who they are going to be yet, because Nate (McMillan) has had to readjust for a number of games.

"When the big fella in a consistent basis, you'll start to see exactly what the team is," Popovich added.

According to McMillan, Oden did some light running on Saturday and the team will take a look at him on Monday.

"This has been a lot slower that we expected," said McMillan, "as far as, we thought it would be a few days rest and this thing will calm down and it hasn't."

McMillan said the Blazers would need to see Oden in a full practice before he returns. That means a lot of "live" practices so McMillan can determine if his young center is favoring his knee. Where Oden continues to have discomfort is when he has to stop after sprinting.

Not a good sign for Portland, and Oden for that fact.

"Just seeing him go through drills, and possibly when he is ready to come back, we can go 3 on 3. As many games as we have, we're not going to do 5 on 5," McMillan continued.
 
Nate just said Oden will miss at least all this week.
