So since I've barely been able to see my god damned team this season.. I have to ask.. are Oden's 5 fouls a game.. are they all legit? The fouling seems to be even moreso than last year.

whoops pulled an ABM there

There have been a couple of questionable ones, but he's also taking a lot of fouls from guards.

(I got your back, homie)

Is the D that much worse from Miller and Blake, compared to Blake and Sergio though?

uh, he got a lot of fouls from Sergio and Blake last year, too. :)

Seriously, there've been a couple of games called really tightly (Joel collecting fouls like it's cool as well), and less like tonight where Oden was getting called for everything while JOel had 2.

They're mostly legit. But at least half the blame has to go on PGs and wings who can't keep their men from getting into the lane.

Some were questionable, I think, but he still puts himself in the position to be called for it. Our perimeter defense is just awful and terrible right now.

ok thanks.. I have only had the chance to watch the 1st game in person and then the TNT game. I hope this stuff could get corrected in his careers.. cause our dominant #1 pick cant do much when on the bench.

and regarding our perimeter D.. I figured out how we convince Chicago to give us Hinrich.. giving them Outlaw and Blake and a Pick or 2... and tell them they will need the extra cap space to sign Flash in the off-season! Hinrich at PG and Batum at SF... Oden will only have 1 foul a game! ;)

I think if that trade was available we would already have done it. If it was and KP didn't do it then...just...wow. I pray nothing like that or the rumored Harris or Conley trades were true. If they were and KP passed on them that would be a concern. Right now of course I'm far more worried about McScribbles.

One of the BENEFITS of having a great shotblocker on your team is that the perimeter guys can stay up close on their man and gamble a little bit more, knowing that if their man beats them, the shotblocker is there to send them back. But Oden fouls and turns the ball over more than he blocks shots. Sadly, he hurts us more than he helps us.

benefit of having a shotblocker yes.. but having to rely on him is piss poor. I really think that Blake and co are hurting us a lot more than Oden is.

but now we tell them they need to.. to be able to afford Wade.. MUAHAHAH

His only attribute is his offensive rebounding. He has given us a few extra possessions this season but he has also turned the ball over 3.2 times per game and commits almost 5 fouls per game in limited minutes.

He's scoring 2.5 ppg less this season and turning the ball over more than twice as much as last year. The microfracture knee surgery was two years ago....

We should just trade Oden if he hurts us that much.

you can point out all the negatives you want about oden so far this season, but he still doesn't hurt the team more than he helps.

Oden picks up at least 1 stupid fould every game. Then at least 2 fouls are because our perimeter defenders all suck.

Pretty much this.
There were some ticky-tack fouls called, but most of them are because he doesn't go straight up, he tries to jam that ball back into the defenders fucking face.

Either way, I like that he's physical out there and doesn't take shit, but McScribbles needs to play him till the end, and not bench him with 5 fouls.

who fucking cares if he fouls out early in the fourth, put Joel in there.

If Joel is not in foul trouble then you LET ODEN PLAY till he is gone. Its that simple. What is the point of having one of the best back-ups in the league if you limit both players with stupid rotations and play scared. Rotations, that I might add, allow the players get ZERO flow in the game.

The player that hurts us more then helps us most of the time is your favorite Outlaw. So, stop bagging on Oden and watch the game with a little objectivity. :tsktsk::dunno:

We need the replacement refs back! Oden wasn't fouling out in preseason...

Well part of the problem (no, not all of it but part of it) is that Oden is one of few players making an effort on the defensive end. The problem is that when his teammates arent matching that effort and their players get around them then that leaves Oden trying to defend a smaller, quicker player that already had the advantage of momentum to the basket. Sure, Oden is a good shot blocker but its stupid to think that he clean up all of their mistakes.

I agree... I don't know why it's better to end with 5 fouls than with 6. Just let him fucking play and if he fouls out, so be it. Him being tentative is clearly not working, so just encourage him to be aggressive, especially in the fourth quarter.

Ed O.

Oden was going to have some growing pains this season. It is unavoidable.

But absolutely needed.

Portland will not win a title without an inside threat. Currently the only guy who even has the potential to fill this role is Oden.

Portland has to live with the mistakes now so Oden gets comfortable in the future.

Oh, and one other thing.

The team plays better with Oden on the floor then off. You have also downplayed the importance of offensive rebounds. Those are the only things keeping Portland in games right now.

So since I've barely been able to see my god damned team this season.. I have to ask.. are Oden's 5 fouls a game.. are they all legit? The fouling seems to be even moreso than last year.

Honestly, they are all fouls, but not ones you normally seen called on big men, especially centers. So you can argue that they are bogus, but if you ever "replay" them, they are actual fouls.

I don't know why he is getting called for every little foul. I mean they give him no room to operate. It's like tying his hand behind his back, and making him guard a prime Shaq. You give the edge to his opponent every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

I agree that most are actual fouls but a lot are the kind of fouls that the refs let go if the player is playing aggressively. And Oden is playing aggressively so it really does make no sense. The real problem is that you want your center to play aggressively and you understand that he is going to pick up some fouls that way. That can be good thing and will send a message to the other that between fouls and blocks that you will not be getting shots easily. But when your center is getting 1-3 extra fouls a game because of botched defense from the other players then they cant afford to lose other fouls by playing aggressively.

The problem is that fouls keep him off the floor where he will get the needed experience. It's a catch-22 with him.

I think he just needs to be WAY less aggressive on the defensive end this season. I'd rather have him out there grabbing boards than trying to block every shot.

If they had called all the fouls on Shaq that they call on Oden, Shaq would've averaged 20-something minutes a game as well. Oden is being pinched for whatever godawful reason. A lot of his fouls just simply do not get called on other big men.

What really annoys me is that it is a one way street. A lot of his "turn-overs" are the same kind of fouls on the other side that are not called.

Pretty ugly officiating, imho. The replacement officials were a pain - but they did not play these favoritism games.
