@BlazerFreeman: #Blazers just opened practice to media and, for the second season in a row, owner Paul Allen is on hand to watch first workout.

Chris Haynes said:
Rookie CJ McCollum, from all accounts, has been spectacular in voluntary team workouts. General manager Neil Olshey says McCollum “scores like he breathes.” At 6-3, he's not the prototypical size of an off-guard, though he doesn't see that as an issue.

“I'm going to try (for the two-guard spot),” McCollum told CSNNW.com. “If coach feels I can best help this team playing the two, I'm ready for it. I've been preparing all summer for both positions (point and two), so I think I'll be comfortable playing wherever he puts me at.”

@ChrisBHaynes: Paul Allen wouldn't bite on a playoff guarantee. Says #Blazers should be in the mix.

@ChrisBHaynes: #Blazers coach Terry Stotts says G Mo Williams tweaked his ankle during practice. His status for tonight's session is unknown at the time.

It makes the most sense. He's not going to supplant Lillard and he's a naturally gifted scorer, so I think there's a chance he ends up as the starting shooting guard.

@ChrisBHaynes: This morning #Blazers focused on defense, tonight it will be more on offensive execution. But Stotts added defense will be part of it, too.

Not too familiar with the history of Mo's health. But if he misses a lot if time this season, the addition of Watson will be huge. Don't think they want CJ to be our backup PG yet. Not after what we saw in summer league.

I don't think CJ is ever going to be the backup point guard. He's saying he wants to push for starting two guard.

@BlazerFreeman: #Blazers owner Paul Allen refused to predict a playoff berth "because there’s so many things that can intervene and change things ..."

@BlazerFreeman: #Blazers owner @PaulGAllen said franchise is as stable as it's been in years:"I think we’ve turned the page and we’re in a new era here ..."

@BlazerFreeman: After challenging GM Neil Olshey after last game of 12-13 season to improve team, owner Paul Allen said he was pleased w/ additions.

@CHold: . @PaulGAllen said he doesn't expect any roster moves in season, but noted that "things can always change and evolve."

@BlazerFreeman: #Blazers owner Paul Allen: "I think Neil and the scouts have done a great job improving the talent ..." (cont)

@BlazerFreeman: Allen cont: "Now it’s the coaches’ turn to take that talent and see how far we can go."

Agree that he is a SG. CJ didn't show me much at PG at Summer League, and he didn't play PG in college:

McCollum played the point during Summer League so the logic is to believe he'll be the backup point guard to Lillard. Not so fast, the Trail Blazers were just experimenting with what they had.

They found out that he's capable of playing both positions at a high level. Nonetheless, he's more comfortable at one position, and Olshey explains.

“You got to remember, while CJ can play point, he didn't play point for three years at Lehigh. This is not a Damian Lillard, Stephen Curry kind of situation. They were point guards for their college teams, CJ wasn't.”
I don't see CJ supplanting Mo Williams at backup PG either.

Nope. He'll play behind Wes, and if he plays well enough it might push Wes to the bench.

Yeah, I hope CJ plays well enough to take minutes from our vets. If he does play well we might see more lineups with Wes at SF. Perhaps Batum or Wright even play a little small ball PF.

Sorry but a 6'4" Wes can't play SF FAMS.

Yes, Watson will be great as a 3rd PG.

Don't you think he can in certain matchups? I mean he is listed at 6'5" 220. He out weighs alot of SF's (i.e Batum) I certainly think he can if needed. But right now it is not needed with Nic, Vic and Dorell.

Nic has his wingspan going for him. I don't think Wessy Wes has anything near that range.

Wes is tough, but we'd have to play a zone to make up for his size.

Well history disagrees with you. He has played the bigger SF better than Batum.

The notion that Batum might develop into a stopper defensively has slowly faded. He does an excellent job against point guards, using his wingspan to block their vision and cut off driving lanes, but is less effective against bigger, more physical small forwards. The Blazers will frequently cross-match and use the stronger Wesley Matthews on those players.
