Official 2018-2019 training camp thread

Define "full roster". We are going into camp with 18 players, but only 15 are guaranteed contracts. Sounds "full enough" to me. It gives us the flexibility to pick up someone when all the other teams make their final roster cuts in October - like we did with Wade Baldwin last year.

I suspect at least one of Onuaku or Oliiver will end up being signed as a 2-way, perhaps both, but no need to lock them in now until you see what else becomes available.

BNM

Full as in full. 20 players. And I’d bet none of the training camp guys stick. There’s a reason they didnt get two way deals.

Deyonta Davis was cut today. Still only 21. Ceiling is probably Ed Davis with a jumper. Could be worth a camp invite.

That’s what I don’t get. If we’re not going to sign any two way guys right now, why not fill out the roster and let guys compete? Literally no downside.

I remember he was being talked about as a lottery pick at one point. I know I’d rather give Davis a two way than any of the other camp invites. We stole from Memphis once. Let’s do it again.

This isn’t going to be the rotation, but this is my ideal one

Dame
CJ
Harkless
Aminu
Nurkic

Baldwin
Curry
Trent
Turner
Collins
You should put minutes next to their names

He blocked Biggie's shot - how rude!

I think Terry runs an 8-man rotation this year when healthy, similar to what Indiana did last year.

Dame 36 / McCollum 12
McCollum 24 / Curry 24
Harkless 23 / Turner 25
Aminu 32 / Collins 9 / Harkless 7
Nurkic 29 / Collins 19

Pretty close to what I have

Dame (36) / McCollum (12)
McCollum (23) / Curry (25)
Harkless (23) / Turner (22) / Curry (3)
Aminu (33) / Collins (8) / Harkless (7)
Nurkic (30) / Collins (18)

Nice. I think we do see some 3 guard looks when the matchup lends itself.

Dame/McCollum/Curry/Aminu/Collins for instance could be really effective.

Not me... here's what I have:

Dame (35), Baldwin (13)
Butler (24), Curry (24)
Harkless (24), Butler (10), ET (14)
Aminu (30), Collins (10), Harkless (8)
Nurk (30), Collins (18)

Who plays more minutes this year? Swanigan or Meyers?

I'll go Swanigan. I think he's got the best chance at the 9th man spot.

I know most don't want ET playing at all, but there is no way he only plays 14 mpg if healthy.

EDIT: Didn't see that you had us trading for Jimmy lol. And for the record, I don't think Neal is going to pull that trigger. He's talked about turning down deals for guys that he knows (from player feedback) wouldn't work in the locker room, and I think Butler is one of those guys.

Meyers Lemon

I don’t really care about that stuff.

That 10 man rotation in the beginning of the season. Once Terry cuts it down to 8/9

Dame
CJ
Harkless
Aminu
Nurk

Bench (ranked by minutes)

1. Collins
2. Turner
3. Curry
4. Baldwin or Trent

It's a shame there's questions about Jimmy's character. Trading CJ for him would be absolutely perfect.

I doubt it'll be at 10 to start. We'll be trying to win. There's not enough minutes for that.

Agreed.

If I were Neil though, I'd want to be given some sort of indication that'd he'd be willing to re-sign if things went well before going through with it.

And I wouldn't give up Simons or Collins to do it.

It’s ten at the beginning of every season.
I think the top 8 on this roster is much clearer than on any of the previous four though.

Collins is going to be given every opportunity to play and I think the staff has more trust in what Curry can bring than they had in Bazz and Pat before last season.

Terry had a 9 man rotation in the meat of last season.

The bench seems pretty clear to me, at least initially.

CJ
Curry
Turner
Collins

Those are the locks. The fifth guy will Probably be matchup dependent. Meyers, Biggie, Layman, Stauskas, Baldwin the options. Maybe one of the rooks.

What I’m curious about is whether or not Terry tries out the second unit without CJ. If that happens I’d assume Stauskas would get first crack.

In that scenario, I'd go Layman if the shooting improvement is real. His size and and athleticism on D/transition would be more useful imo--especially is Hark or Aminu is out there with him. Gives that group some 3-4 switchability on D.

Stauskas is probably the safer pick though.

Yeah I’d rather give Layman a look than Stauskas, but I just know in my gut that Stauskas is going to get an opportunity.

Not really.

We had a couple blowouts to start the season so that doesn't apply if we're talking about our rotation in tight games. And a 10th player playing less than 8min doesn't make it a "10 man rotation IMO", because most of the time those minutes are situational and n ot part of a regular rotation (ex. Playing Meyers against Cousins). If you look at the rotation in October to start last season, multiple games saw us only playing 9 players. Some saw a 10th guy getting very limited minutes. It wasn't a 10-man rotation.
