Cole Aldrich
25 years old | 6'11" 245 | C
46 games | PER36: 10 PPG 14 RPG 3.3 BPG | DRtg: 100 -- 23 TRB%| 19 PER

I know it's a very small sample size but for the first time in his career he looked like he had a clue last year. In two starts (yeah, I know..) he put up 13 PPG 13 RPG 4 BPG. He's hopefully on the upswing and won't revert to his pre-Knick play. When you're looking for a backup/3rd stringer, there isn't a better option out there for the BAE.

So, we'll have RoLo as the starter, Freeland as the backup, and Aldrich as the 3rd stringer.

Does that mean Meyers Leonard will be sitting on the bench wearing street clothes like Claver did last season?

Freeland is a PF. In fact, he didn't even play C in Europe.

With Meyers looking like a deer-in-the-headlights Joel had to play the five.

PF: Aldridge / Robinson / Freeland
C: Lopez / Leonard / Aldrich

how bout Kaman for the BAE?

Cole Aldrich? Really? He's been in the league 4 years, on 4 teams (5 if you count the Hornets), and has a career average of 2 ppg and 2.8 rpg.

We already have a better Cole Aldrich. His name is Meyers Leonard.

Meyers is 3 years younger, 2 inches taller, a better shooter, and more athletic. But let's give up on Meyers and replace him with Aldrich?

This is not how I'd spend our scant resources this off season.

Keep in mind this is BAE. I've seen some pretty nice names thrown around in here for that level that I just believe us or anyone else will have a shot at. If Cole is servicable, he might be one of the max talent wise you are going to get for that option.

Unless you know something I don't.

I know I wouldn't replace Meyers Leonard with Cole Aldrich just for the pleasure of using up the BAE.

I haven't studied other teams but wouldn't be surprised if a lot them are down to MLE and BAE. First the value MLE players taken, then the value BAE players. I think some players it comes down to which GM can convince the value players to come to their franchise.

Who did we get last year with the BAE?

Earl Watson? I understand it's a different year. But do you think the talent recieved will be any better than that?

I think point guard is so crucial to what we're going to do, so I would use the MLE on a backup point guard and the BAE on either a wing or a big.

I still think Neil is going to make a trade for a wing though. That's just my gut.

Kaman?? Aldrich?? I'd rather just give minutes to Leonard lol what a joke.

Agreed. Meyers is a full 3.5 years younger than Aldrich. So Aldrich has had 3.5 more years of development, 2 of them in the NBA, to show he's better than Meyers. He not only isn't better than Meyers today, Meyers will be better than him in 3 years. And Kaman will be sitting on his porch yelling at kids to get off his lawn.

We need another veteran big. Leonard is still so raw. I'm not necessarily advocating Kaman or Aldrich, but we need a vet who we can count on to come in and spell rolo.

Go get okafor of jermaine o'neal to backup lopez

True, we need a dependable reliever for Fropez. But Aldrich isn't a vet, he's a D-Leaguer. I'm still on the Jermaine bandwagon though. ;)

Okafor might be a good option, but we have no idea what his status is. He didn't play at all last season. He might be done as far as we know.

Jermaine would be great, but isn't he locked up in GS?

Edit - I guess not. I think he signed the 2 million/ one year deal last summer with Golden State. I would be on board with Jermaine.

A healthy Joel Freeland makes a good backup center. We had a ridiculous start to the season with his defense before injury. I'd sign Jermaine Oneal to take Earl Watson's roster spot in a heartbeat. Joel is our version of a Nick Collison

Joel was really playing well before he went down with the injury. I'm interested to see how he does next season. I think he'll continue to improve.

If Jason Smith can be had for the BAE get him

If not he should still be a target

Jason Smith is another one of those not very good players that Blazer fans seem to be obsessed with. Isn't' he really injury prone too?

Okafor would be my first choice if his physical checks out ok. Jason Smith is a good option and the Pelicans will have to cut him to complete the Asik trade. Ekpe Udoh would be great but I think he goes for more than the BAE.

I think we'll probably target someone with our MLE first and that could impact who we target with the BAE. Obviously we'd love to get Pau Gasol for the MLE if for some odd reason that is possible. Spencer Hawes is probably in that boat. But then we fall the the more realistic Marvin Williams, Shawn Marion, Avery Bradley options at the MLE. Grabbing one of those players effects the position we need for the BAE. If there aren't any great BAE options available we can just use that roster spot on a minimum salary guy and roll the BAE over to next year. Hence the name "BI-annual exception"

Unless we can pick up a difference maker at PG I'd target other positions first with our MLE and BAE. There are so many great free agent PG's we will find solid options for even the minimum. Next season if we have another stretch with big man injuries I don't want to have to play Victor Calvier at backup center as we did last year.

I think the obvious choice now is Brian Roberts.

He can shoot and was more than serviceable when he started.

Kind of a catch 22 scenario. If his physical checks out how could we possibly get him for the BAE?

So if Mo signs with Dallas, I bet we're going to sign Steve Blake. At times last year I wished we had a backup more like Blake. There's also
-Ridnour
-Hinrich
-Brooks

Yeah I'd be happy with Ridnour or Blake. I like Hinrich's game but not sure if he'd accept the role well and I'd rather have a slightly inferior player if he totally buys into the roll as a backup or 3rd string PG. Our good chemistry was critical last season. For the same reason I hope we can reach a buyout with Clavier; I don't think he'll be happy here.

Given our roster size limitations, I hope we keep him, and allow him to supplant Wright as our backup SF.
