We cannot sign and trade Mo guys. Get that out of your thinking. He must play at least 3 years before a player can sign and trade

I'm pretty sure we can sign and trade him mags. I don't believe he has to have bird rights to be signed and traded. I believe early bird and non bird exceptions still qualify.

Do you have a source to back this up?

No source looking it up. I just remember we had that problem with hickson because he wasn't with us for 3 years. Brian would be better qualified.

Huh? We had hicksons bird rights because we claimed him off waivers. I believe we renounced his rights to create the cap space for the Lopez and trob deals

"The player cannot be signed using the Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level exception, the Taxpayer Mid-Level exception, or any exception that cannot be used to offer a three-year contract (see question number 25)."

I may be reading it wrong, but in order for the Blazers to sign Mo, we must use the MLE or BAE to resign him, since we don't have his bird rights.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Also, I thought the moment we renounced hickson to make cap room, was when he was off bird rights; which makes him fall into the same category as an non-bird free agent as well. I seem to remember asking Brian this very same question "can't we sign and trade hickson?"

We can sign him using the non bird exception. Which allows is to sign him for 120% above his last year's salary with 4.5% max raises for up to four years

Pretty sure once you renounce a guy, unless you unrenounce him, which I don't believe you can if his cap hold space has been used, you lose his bird rights entirely, and he would not qualify for any exceptions.

Technically if we would have picked him up off the street instead of claiming him off waivers, hickson would have qualifid as an early bird exception because he had finished two years with the team. A partial year counts as a full year

Well if we can sign and trade Mo, that could be a valuable asset. In no cap guru, but I just remembered Brian explaining how we can't sign and trade a non bird player. If I understood it wrong, then I stand corrected.

"The player cannot be signed using the Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level exception, the Taxpayer Mid-Level exception, or any exception that cannot be used to offer a three-year contract (see question number 25).

This said "any exemption".. Wouldn't BAE be considered one of those?

If that's the case, then Portland will not be able to resign a "non-bird" player, since we aren't under cap.

That would mean for us to make a sign and trade work, we would need one of our exemptions. To me it reads this is not allowed in a sign and trade.

The non bird exception can sign someone to a four year contract.

The bae can only sign someone to two years

You don't have to be under the cap to sign someone with the non bird exception

But even a "non bird exemption" is still an exemption right? The quote on Coon's FAQ said "no exemption can be used"

No exception can be used that can't offer a three year contract. You can sign a guy with the non bird exception up to four years

It's the contract length that matters, not the fact that an exception is used. The contract length has to be at least 3 years.

If we signed Mo using the BAE, the longest contract that could be given would be two years. In that scenario, he couldn't be involved in a S&T.

Since the Blazers have the ability to sign him using the non-Bird Exception, they could sign him to a deal of 3-4 years. That fits the rule so he could be included in a S&T.

Oh okay. So what is the max dollar amount of a non-bird exemption?

It starts at 120% of the player's prior year salary, with a maximum of 4.5% annual raises, and a maximum length of 4 years.

He's gonna get more than that bro. Pushing 3.5 mil seemed too low even.

Yeah, I agree. He wants a minimum of 3 years, too, so a team is going to have to be willing to swallow that as well. But, yeah, after seeing what salaries are doing this summer, I think Mo's played his last game as a Blazer and I don't think we'll get anything back for him.

If Portland was able to have him agree to stay for 3.18, then I think that qualifies for a free agent and Portland. Obviously he could get more somewhere else

Mavericks, I'm told, are closing in on a verbal agreement to bring back point guard Devin Harris. Sides expected to strike three-year deal

Does anyone know if Dallas signing Harris effects whether or not they would still go after Mo?

I would say yes. Regardless if Dallas has cap space, Harris would fill their guard position up

I'd have to think so. They have Felton, Harris, mekel and Ellis who can all play Pg.

if we lose out on Mo i'm betting we get black back.
