travis outlaw and future 2nd for drew gooden = 1.8 million dollar savings

Sending Gooden out for a trade exception only works if there is some team under the cap that wants to rent him for the rest of the year, no? Chances of that seem slim, since there are few teams under the cap.

Travis makes $4 mil and Gooden makes $4.5, so I'm not sure how you can save 1.8 million on that deal. Especially since the season is already 2/3rds over. More like $350 thousand. And why would someone send cash in order to get a end-of-the-year rental player?

Haywood is putting up a 16.3 PER (compared to a 15.5 PER for his career). Gooden is putting up a 16.4 PER (compared to a 16.5 PER for his career). Their positions aren't that relevant because Haywood's value will mostly be aiding depth (he's only slightly better than Dampier) just as Gooden was mostly just depth.

It's a bit of an upgrade on defense, which may or may not be neutralized by dealing the better defender Howard for Butler. If the Mavericks are a better team, it's only marginally better.

I agree that it's not the slam dunk/robbery deal many believe it to be, but I think they are definitely better. Not by much, but I think it elevates them to No. 2 status in the West. Yes, Butler's and Howard's careers have been rather similar, though Butler has played significantly more minutes while producing at the same high level. Haywood is a better shot blocker than Gooden and may help them match up better with Pau/Bynum in the playoffs.

dont need to be in title contention imo, i would say playoff contention. and as far as rich goes, what does that mean? teams that arent bankrupt? or shedding salary? you dont have to be mark cuban to pay for an improvement, thats silly.

over 4 million i think orlando has areal big TE from the hedo deal i believe, denver has one, miami, utah and NO also but they arent using it. ALOT of teams have smaller ones they could use as well for other players.

i agree though it should be interesting,they are ripe for the picking right now. they would probably consider ANY deal that saves them ANY money.
