Troy Weaver Interviews For Blazers GM Job
Sep 03, 2011 10:11 AM EDT

The Blazers have begun interviewing candidates for their general manager vacancy, according to sources.

Troy Weaver is Sam Presti's No. 2 with the Oklahoma City Thunder and was in Portland for an interview on Thursday.

Weaver was behind the push for the then-Sonics to draft Russell Westbrook and is considered a well-connected networker.

Chris Mullin!!!??? I mean, I like the guy and all, but the number of talented players that Golden State has traded away boggles the mind.

Was Mullin the one that did the Dunleavy-for-Captain Jack trade? I might warm to him if it was. But then if he was the one that drafted Dunleavy at #3, then he's right back on my shit list.

Other than Mullin, it's basically the familiar Spurs-or-Spurs-via-Sonics obsession again. If we didn't like Pritchard or Cho, why are we going back to those wells?

A full GM does more than just talent evaluation. He runs the stadium business. I'd like someone smarter than the average bear. And someone who has been humbled by real office jobs for many years. Former NBA players like Mullin don't qualify.

Why isn't Bob Whitsitt on the list? Allen fears the mighty Canzano.

Mullin is hard to evaluate. He had to deal with both a difficult owner and coach (Don Nelson). Not sure who to give credit for the talent they found and who to blame for the players they lost.

To me it just doesn't matter. After the firing of KP & Cho and others, it has become evident the GM has little authority and has to be a "yes" man.

Being considered:

David Griffin
Neil Olshey
Troy Weaver
Dennis Lindsey
Chris Mullin

I vote for Dennis Weaver.

Correct me if I'm wrong HCP, but if I hunt all the GMs, they're gonna lock me up and throw away the key...

I'm gonna throw my hat into the ring. If they are merely looking for a "yes" man, I think I could fill those shoes nicely. It would even be a good fan-outreach move. I'll keep PapaG on my speed dial to run all moves by him though.

Hire all 5, GM as committee. PA has the cash.

Blazers president Larry Miller says he "hopes" the organization has a GM before the team next takes the court, but he wouldn't guarantee it.

Well that's certainly taking the bull by the horns Larry.

The team already has a GM.

They're just looking for a patsy to dial phones and be a scapegoat when the team underperforms.

You're right, I shouldn't have counted out Bert.

On the other hand just how long does it take to find a guy who's willing to get paid a couple hundred K a year to work a phone for a couple of years? Unless of course they still intend to keep up the pretense that the GM job is "real?"
:dunno:

Weaver pulls out of Blazers’ GM search

Oklahoma City Thunder executive Troy Weaver has withdrawn from consideration for the Portland Trail Blazers’ general manager vacancy, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Weaver, an assistant GM, had interviewed for the job in early September, and was still a prominent part of the pool of candidates, sources said.
Portland officials conducting the search have failed to reach a consensus on bringing in candidates to meet owner Paul Allen, and had started gauging the interest of more established GMs in the league. Blazers officials hope that offering more money to higher-profile candidates could convince some to push their own owners to let them get involved in the search.

San Antonio Spurs assistant GM Dennis Lindsey is still part of the candidate pool, sources said.

“They’re going to have a tough time finding guys who are established and content to leave for the uncertainty that’s come with that job,” one Western Conference executive said. “Even if they do offer a lot of money.”

Weaver has been particular about the jobs he’s considered, having turned down a chance to interview for at least one GM position a year ago. Most league executives believe it’s just a matter of time until Weaver’s a GM, and that he didn’t have a desire to hang around in Portland’s circuitous search.

Portland fired one of Weaver’s former colleagues in Oklahoma City, Rich Cho, less than a year after hiring him as a replacement for Kevin Pritchard.

Can anybody remember recently if a team went into the season without a GM?

According to Canzano the team is back to square one as of this past Monday.

The management sucks a fat one. Seriously, Larry Miller is about as bad as this team has ever had.

“Rich is the perfect fit for our organization,” said Miller. “He has the right balance of basketball knowledge, business acumen and tremendous people skills. Everyone I spoke to about Rich commented not just on his qualifications but on who he is as a person. He is well known for his ability to connect genuinely with people. Rich will be a great fit for our organization and for Portland. He is an executive on the rise and we’re thrilled to have him as a Trail Blazer.”

:sigh:

I guess tremendous is not enough to work with PA.

But a league source told me former New Orleans GM Jeff Bower and Philadelphia GM Ed Stefanski will be among the #Blazers' new GM targets.

Didn't that Bower guy suck with the Hornets?

Just hire Trader Bob and get this shit over with.
