Don't see one of these up. Figured we could use this thread to talk about the "war" and upcoming movies.</p>

Does anyone have either player? I have the add-on for the 360 and the ps3 is my blu-ray player. I'm pretty neutral right now. I have 10 Blu-rays and 8 HD-Dvds. I buy whatever movie, i dont care about format.</p>

Seems like VHS/Beta wars all over again. I would consider getting some sort of HD DVD player, but I'd hate to invest in the media for a player that turns out to be the loser.</p>

Sony (made Beta in the old days) has a strong position with the PS3 and that they own signficant properties and studios. HD DVD seems to be the better technology, tho they might be the losers (as Beta was better as well). I hear the Blu-Ray players take like foerver to boot up.</p>

Everyone is comparing it to the BetaMax/VHS war. HD-DVD gained a lot of steam this past week with their players selling for only $99 at Walmart. What will determine the outcome is studio support and right now its split, with a few major studios supporting one format so it evens out. Still way too early to tell.</p>

Celtic, I can tell a difference a bit, but there are factors to consider. I have the PS3 hooked up differently, with HDMI and my 360 is component. I think to the difference isn't that noticeable on my tv where i'd endorse one over the other.</p>
 
You're right, I have the hd receiver hooked up with HDMI and the 360 like you said with component, and there is a difference.</p>
 
I to have the Hi Def adapter for the Xbox and my brother is getting the PS3for Xmas so i'll be able to fully compare then. But for the Time being I'm a HD Man.</p>

Tokyo Drift is probably the best hi-def movie experience I've had, with maybe Transformers giving it a run for its money. 300 is 3rd.</p>
 
Yeh the Engine sound and the Looks on the cars in Hi-Def is amazing.</p>
 
For those not very familiar with what the two formats are i've updated the first post with a tips/guide for all info. I'll update it when I find new info. I'm compiling a list of best places to buy movies.</p>

Wasn't Sony behind the Laserdisc, as well?</p>
 
The last thing I heard was that Blue Ray was outselling HD DVD 3 to 1. Blue Ray is going to run away when its all said and done.</p>
 
I'm not really sure where you got this info about Blu-ray going to run away with it. Early on it seemed like Blu-ray had an advatage but lately with studio support and the lowered HD-DVD players, its not so clear anymore. I think it'll be a long time before its determined which format will be the standard. History tells us HD-DVD will win.</p>
 
I dunno... I don't see very much compelling about either of them to be honest. Still way too expensive for a mass audience.</p>
 
It'll definitely take a few years for either to really become common. Standard DVDs just started to become the norm the past 3-4 years.</p>

Not sure Sony was behind the Laserdisc. Two things are for sure: people like shiney disks, and they like little shiney disks better than big shiney ones

$99 disk player at Walmart. That's not too expensive. The media/software is about the same as regular DVDs.</p>

The thing for me is that any DVD I'd want to buy now seems like it's going to be obsolete once I get some sort of Hi Def player.</p>

nah for the most part the software is almost $10 to double more than a standard DVD. Youc an buy a new movie for $15-20 on SDVD. Hi Def formats are $25-30. Its pretty outrageous. There are only certain movies you can get for $20 right now. The other issue is if you get a hi-def player you better have or should buy a hi-def tv. If you don't then whats the point? The % of hi-def tvs in households is very low right now.</p>

Right now I only buy movies that I know are "must sees" in Hi-Def or that get great reviews at hi-def digest. Other I still buy SDVDs.</p>
 
^^^ good point. I generally buy DVDs that are "must see" as well, but I was an early adopter of HDTV and DVD and now I have a decent number of DVDs. So many that I have to consider spending the extra $5 to get the HD versions from now on.</p>
