He has prevented a bigger bloodbath in Syria by holding back the Western powers responsible for 100,000 dead. He's defending a secular socialist government, very popular with its citizens (75% approval rating), against the right-wing religious Al Qaeda created by the CIA to fight Soviets in Afghanistan.
