I read McCain decided it wasn't a good idea to go on a clown show on TV when the nation is going through this serious stuff.

Regarding McCain in DC: There's this perception among some that it is Bush and the Democrats, and the House GOP led by John McCain revolting against the President.

While inaccurate, is that perception really a bad thing? Reinforces McCain's maverick image, plus it looks like he's going against an unpopular President.
