In breakthrough, OHSU corrects defective gene that causes deadly disease

A scientific breakthrough in Oregon that offers hope to those with genetic defects that cause deadly diseases faces steep hurdles to be tested.

Congress has enacted barriers to clinical trials for such genetic trials, and the National Institutes of Health has banned funding.

Even scientists have reservations.

But that doesn't discourage lead researcher Shoukhrat Mitalipov, head of OHSU's center for Embryonic Cell and Gene Therapy. He hopes his success in the laboratory will help soothe fears about genetic manipulation of human embryos.

His team corrected a faulty gene that causes a heart condition that is the most common cause of sudden death in young athletes. The same technique could be used against genes that cause thousands of diseases, including some breast and ovarian cancers.

Two research candidates, Mitalipov said, are two breast cancer gene mutations that have prompted many women, including actress Angelina Jolie, to undergo mastectomies to prevent breast and ovarian cancer.

In theory, the genes could be corrected, preventing generations of women from developing cancer caused by those mutations. But Mitalipov's technique would have to be tested in a clinical trial that is banned in the United States.

A lot of ethical, religious, social, and scientific aspects to this. Would you be okay with OHSU running a clinical trial right in our back yard?

I'm OK with it. If the clinical trial testing occurs in Ohio, I really don't care. All the other peer groups recognize this as an alteration of humanity. It can happen anywhere beyond US borders too!.

Drop the feel? What are you even talking about?!

His theory is that everyone else 'feels' too much. MarAzul is a purely rational being, like Spock, or perhaps like a parking meter.

I get that, but I don't understand where my OP said anything about feelings. For being strictly rational, his comment wasn't at all rational.

Genetic research and nanotechnology offer a ton of possibility, so I hope that research is allowed to proceed with some amount of oversight.

I am Legend.

Good thing humans never encounter unforseen results when pursuing scientific achievement.

That's the fun of it.

I'm sick of you hating on cherries! It's because, don't you speek French?

seeing gene modification in action tickled that sci-fi part of his brain and he started fantasizing about eliminating liberals via eugenics

Ha! Well, if science fixes multiple genetic mistakes with this technique there is a good chance they get rid of liberals by accident.

Probably just people who watch Hannity and listen to Rush Limbaugh. Those aren't really conservatives, they're sheep.

Maybe the reason we can't debate anymore is because each side sees the other as totally defective, instead of accepting that only conservatives are defective we're all the same.

Ha ha. Conservatives are just less defective.

I bet human embryos taste like chicken.

Every attempt by humans to improve upon nature's supposed flaws has always created worse flaws, because in reality nature is perfect.

Totally agree, God's design is.

Gonna throw a monkey wrench here:

Since God is perfect and makes no mistakes and Gay people are born that way, then they were designed that way by God...
