OK let's talk about it Roy VS Drexler Who was the better player

Drexler was light years better than any blazer we've had or have currently. His defense was some of the best I've ever seen from a sg. He rebounded well and made everyone around him better.

Do you remember the clutch blocks or steals he had? It was amazing to watch.

I would argue the shooting too. You should look at drexler's career numbers. The dude just oozed superstardom.

Roy could have been great if stayed healthy, but I doubt he would ever get to a level like drexler.

Sorry bro, it's not even close and drexler isn't even my favorite blazer.

I think, what's interesting, is the areas Drexler has the advantage (rebounding, defense, transition) it's an overwhelming one. They're pretty even otherwise, except for game closing ability, where Roy was one of the best in the last 20 years. But game closing is probably the most important measuring trait there is, and so I give it to Roy overall.

Drexler's defense was out of this world. Only player than he had trouble defending was Jordan. Everyone else would have big issues against him.

Who had issues with Drexler's D? Your treating Drexler like Republicans Treat Reagan. Just because you say it over and over again doesn't make it true. His OTB Defense was NOT good. He was NOT and never was a OTB defensive stopper. He was NOT better than Roy at OTB Defense before Roy's injuries. Now Drex was a FAR better Off The Ball Defender as that's where his steals came from (which would lead to many transition DUNKS). But to say that his D was outta this world? That is just not the case.

Now if we want to compare scoring averages Drexler had Terry Porter.

Roy had Blake.... Terry Porter made DREXLER better. We had no guards to help Make Roy Better. I can say this though:

Passing Drexler>Roy (I only give one chevron because Drex played w/Porter) But there was a season where Drexler averaged 8 assists a game.

That was a hyperbole argument. I am acknowledging how good Drexler was. And as far as a player turning a franchise around; he is the Blazer's Ronald Reagan. Walton brought the ring, but didn't stay with the franchise long enough to make a fan impact like Drexler did.

Drexler is #2 all time in steals at SG. 7th All time in the entire NBA. The OTB isn't a telling stat on his defensive prowess.

Scoring, Drexler was a hellofalot better.

"He is one of three players in NBA history to have posted career totals of at least 20,000 points, 6,000 rebounds and 6,000 assists (the two others being Oscar Robertson and John Havlicek).[14] As of 2008, Drexler leads all guards with his career average of offensive rebounds with 2.4 per game."

Get back to me when Roy was ever on pace for something like this....

Drexler played with a lead guard that actually made HIM better. Playing with Porter IMHO is the difference in Scoring #s. I already gave Drex his due on rebounding and his passing.

That's a load of crap. And miller was a great passing guard. Roy had problems playing with a facilitator.
 
I love watching both guys play. It's really close for me because of how clutch Roy was. If Roy was healthy he'd be the best SG in the game right now. My knock on Roy was he wasn't a very good play maker for his teammates. But with the game on the line I'd take Roy. Overall game I'd take Drexler. Game 7, 2 minutes left I'd take Roy every time!

Roy averaged 4.7 Assists for his career. While not being good in this area as Drexler, saying he "wasn't a very good playmaker for his teammates" is not a correct statement.

Then how come Drexler didn't win any defensive player awards?
 
For me it comes down to who made the team better. IMO Drexler played within the team system and while he was the superstar, everyone helped and contributed and he played with them. There was passing and transition.

Roy, while great, was all too often Roy & the Lugnuts. ISO-ball. Less team emphasis, movement, etc. Yes, Drexler had some very good players around him but Roy also had some decent players around him as well but it was a Roy emphasis game, not a team game.

Drexler had more success and games with Drexler were MUCH more fun to watch. Not discounting that Roy was a very good player, but I'm not sure Roy could have taken a "team" to the heights Drexler took his.

Career steals were at a 2.6 average. He was always over shadowed by Jordan; who won all defensive awards. There were other defensive specialists like cooper back then as well.

Honestly, I wish I could remember more of Clyde. I was pretty young when we were making our runs with Clyde, Terry, Jerome, etc. I didn't really start to understand and follow the league until 1993-1994.

I know that when Roy was healthy, he was as good as any other guard in the league. He was killer when the game was on the line. I really wish he could have stayed healthy because I think he would have set a legacy in the playoffs.

I saw him, I just don't remember much of it. I think I was in third or fourth grade when we were in the finals against the Bulls. My memory from that time is spotty at best.

That whole team was beautiful to watch. They played the game the right way. And to me, the game hasn't been played at a level since then by any Blazer team. But Clyde was a big key to that. His reckless abandon way of doing business was a beautiful thing to watch. I don't care about what they said about him. How hard he worked in practice. All I know is what I saw on the court. And there hasn't ever been Blazer ever quite like him since. Which is sad. I'm craving for that brand of basketball. Badly.

Doubt we will ever see it again.

Drexler also played without the benefit of a player of LA's ability. Porter, while the best PG we've had (sans possibly Lillard), was a one-time all-star.
 
Yeah clearly Drexler was superior to Roy.

Roy was pretty freaking great one year here, before he got injured against the Lakers. He was a top7 NBA player that season. Drexler had similar seasons but I don’t know if he was ever quite in the top 5 of NBA players. If Roy had been able to keep up that production maybe he would’ve been able to equal Drexler. If his knees were healthy maybe he would’ve let lose his athleticism more often. But that’s not what happened so no at the end of the day its not even close.
 
I don’t think we’ve seen the last of Roy in an NBA uniform. Give him another year or two with his knees feeling fine sitting at home and he’ll have to scratch that itch to try one last comeback. I guess we could sign him as a free agent in summer of 2015 ;|

Drexler was 1st Team All-NBA in 92 and finished 2nd in the MVP voting behind Jordan that same year. Roy was nowhere near that level of elite play.

That's what I was thinking. Memories fade. Walton, then Drexler were the two best Blazers of all time. Add Lucas and those are the only jersey's that should be hanging from the rafters.

Drexler > Roy.

Ballhandling Roy>>>Drexler (Drex = no left hand. Why Roy is better at Iso)
Mid range Jumper Roy>>>Drexler (drexler's jumper got better but still)
3 point range Roy>>>Drexler (this one's easy)
On the Ball Defense Roy>Drexler (when Roy wanted to he was solid defender before the knee injuries)
Off Ball Defense Drexler>>>Roy (Drex avg'd 2 stls per game for his career)
Leadership Roy>>>Drexler (Without Porter we would have no leader)
Half court Offense Roy>>>Drexler (obvious)
Transition Offense Drexler>>>Roy (obvious)
Athletcism Drexler>>>>Roy (roy had 40 inch vert but never really used it)
Work Ethic Roy>>Drexler (Drex has been reported to be a lazy practice player)
Killer Instinct Roy>>>>Drexler (there is absolutely no debate on this)

In my conclusion I would rather have Roy than Drexler. Imagine Roy with Porter at PG. Porter RAN that team and IMHO was the major reason for our success (Drex leading scorer but IMHO did not have the BBIQ that Porter had).

And now I will await the :shitstorm: I've just awakened!
