A report today indicates that Okafur, who is a restricted free agent, has been unable to reach an agreement with Charlotte and is (or might be?) requesting a sign-and-trade in order to receive a longer contract.
The Nets could clearly send back enough salary to make something work. Let's say Okafur was signed to a four year, $45 million deal, which isn't horrible. The Nets could package some combination of Swift, Hassell, Ager, Sean, and/or an S&T Krstic. That would give Charlotte a $6 million expiring contract, plus a young kid with potential (Sean or Krstic).
--Would that deal make the Nets playoff contenders?
--Should the Nets do it, even if they had to sign Okafur to a four-year deal?
