Now, rumors are emerging that the Trail Blazers are interested in adding Whiteside in their roster to have a defensive presence in the middle. According to All U Can Heat, Trail Blazers general manager Neil Olshey have been chasing Whiteside in the free agency because of his enthusiasm of old-school low-post guy just like Hassan.

Anything would help....

We need a center and PF.

Please god help my blazers

Have at least 5% of chance to we sign in him, or its just a impossible ideia? He just sign in a new contract with the heat

Anything but that headcase!

Olshey is likely going to try to save his job, I just hope he does nothing stupid in a fit of desperatation

Article states we are offering Leonard, Plumlee, Harkless and 2 first round draft picks... interesting. White side is good, but it would sting to lose Harkless and the picks. Maybe Layman is in the plans to be a bigger part of the future.

hard to believe that would be enough, Leonard sucks and with his contract is at best a neutral piece, Hark is the best piece and Plums is ok but will get paid this offseason. The two picks if they are the Blazers picks would be expected to be at what 12-24 so mid rd/ I gotta believe someone like Boston would make a much stronger offer

I'd give EVERYONE else on the roster except Dame and CJ to get Whiteside. Once you get 3 - others WANT to come play here.
Yes, Harkless would be missed, but only until Layman got 30 straight games under his belt. : )

Who does Neil think he dealing with he dealing with Pat Riley is not stupid enough to give his best player to anyone right now. Especially someone anchor his defense and get players that not very good defender except Harkless I dont see this happening.

Riley knows he's needs draft picks and young projects...Miami will not contend as constructed..I could see him trading for a starter and bench help plus picks

The only player mentioned in the article that can be traded today is Plumlee.

Whiteside can not be traded until Dec 15th
Leonard can not be traded until Jan 14th
Harkless can not be traded until Jan 14th

Reason, all three signed free agent contracts last off season.

Wish this type of info was stickied somewhere....

Why can Whiteside be traded before Leonard/Harkless? They all signed extensions with their original team.

WHERE?

Article doesn't state anything like that. This is just some random dude going on trade machine.

First thing I learned about Olshey is you won't know what he's doing until 1 minute before a deadline...he isn't a guy who let's rumors spread much

I've always been confused by the statements like this.

"The Trail Blazers is offering".

Why isn't the correct way to write that "The Trail Blazers ARE offering"?

Saying "is", makes it sound like it's improper english, "They IS who we say they is"

correct unless you use it as a non count noun which usually would say the Trail Blazers Organization is....

A free agent can not be traded before Dec. 15th, or, 3 months after the contract is signed, WHICH EVER IS LATER.

No, that's not it at all. It all depends on if you're signed with cap space or bird rights. Bird rights retentions have a later trade-availability date.

But if we want to net someone significant the package will have to include Moe Harkless. Him and Aminu (and maybe Davis) are our only positives assets at the moment with good contracts.

With those three we are at about 21M. Which is enough to get an all-star caliber player. Is someone desperate enough to accept that and some picks? I am not sure. But Moe at this price must have a really really high value around the league.

Here is the NBA's official explanation of the free agent trade rule. I have not had enough coffee yet to completely understand what it says in the last paragraph about bird rights, cap space and salary. But I believe you make a valid point.

95. When can a team trade a free agent it signs? Do they have to keep him forever?
Generally a team only has to keep a player for three months after signing a contract or December 151 of that season, whichever is later. This does not apply to draft picks, who can be traded 30 days after signing (even if signed using cap room in a later season -- see question number 51). For sign-and-trade transactions, the initial trade which completes the sign-and-trade obviously is allowed, even though it occurs right after the player is signed. The trade restriction in a sign-and-trade applies to the first subsequent trade.

See question number 100 for more information on trade restrictions.

1 January 15 if the player is a Larry Bird or Early Bird free agent, re-signs with his prior team, his team is over the cap, and he receives a raise greater than 20% in the first season of his contract, and his new salary is greater than the minimum salary.
