"There is a realistic timeline in the Western Conference. We sometimes need to take a longer lens... There is no quick fix that can make us say, 'we are better than the Warriors.' Nobody is afraid to go our and compete, but we require a sense of realism when it comes to this."

"Really excited about Zach Collins. He's a two way player, he's tough, can shoot, can score, defend, is really long. Ironically like CJ, he was also drafted 10th and players usually picked in this range are relied upon early. He's developing and is going to be really really good. Currently we are 4th in the west, and the variance between 4th and 10th in the west is tiny and we can't afford to lose games now at the cost of his development. We also have a ton of positional conflicts with so many bigmen. Collins is in every day and working, and Terry has proved that you don't need minutes to develop. My background affords me the patience, but we are seeing behind the scenes how good this guy is and will be."

This is gonna trigger half the board.

Translation: we’re going after Hezonja.

Regarding scouting: "I'd rather be on the road, at games, in college practices. I try to be at home when the team is, but when they're on the road, so am I. I try to get to about 85-110 college games in a year. You've got to get out, and for a high level prospect in our range, we have to see him a minimum of 3 times live for each of the staff. And a conference tournament counts as 1 of those times. So between me and the staff, we see each guy live about 12 times + film. I watch a lot of film prior to seeing the guys live on flights from Portland. "

Didn’t he say he only watched Collins live once? Lol.

I thought he just said that he wanted Collins the first time he saw him.

Yeah I wasn’t being serious anyway, but if Olshey said he only saw him live once, I’m guessing he wasn’t being serious either.

I'm glad you weren't being serious; I didn't pick it up because it was definitely the kind of misinterpretation I've seen plenty of times around here.

Found the video. Olshey basically said that he went to the Gonzaga-Portland game in January, saw two plays from Collins, and said, "All right, we're done here--he's a top-10 pick".

It was in the context of how there is not one move that we can make to vault ourselves ahead of GS in the next few years. You have to think for the future with both the draft and the players retained in FA.

That it's good that the players feel like they can play with anyone, but basically, the staff has to remain level-headed and realize there is no sense in gutting the team's future in order to acquire a good team that can't beat the warriors

So that mean we give up no zach Collins or Swanigan or a 1st rounder to Move a Bad contract away?

What I've been saying about him from day 1.... Hope Neil and I am right!

Not necessarily, because that bad contract can bite our future's ass if we're above a certain salary threshold for a certain number of years. But I think attaching an asset to move a bad contract will only be done as a last-ditch effort as the clock is ticking down.

I just Wonder how Portland pay Nurkic and Then resign vonleh or connaughton when the Blazers have 112 Million in guaranteed money without these players when free agency is starting

Through the rules of Restricted Free Agency. We will retain them - no question about that.

Yeah they are restricted so if Noah and Pat contuine to play on that Level, i also think Olshey want to resign them. But look the cap without Nurk, Noah and pat is 112 Million. So add 18-20 Million from Nurk that's 130 Million and Then also Noah and pat, we would probably be around 140. That's even more than the Warriors if we Don't move Harkless, Meyers or Turner. That's a crazy payroll for a non Contender

he said he liked some pass Collins made, without watching or whatever... that was the moment he knew Collins is the truth

You can go over the cap to sign your own players. I'm also not sure we're gonna pay Vonleh.

we need to find the way to keep Vonleh, if not, we better play Collins there, I dont want to watch Chief
Vonleh and Collins have talent and upside, Chief is finished product

"Guaranteed contracts are da devil!"

latest

"You have three wishes, chose wisely !"

1. MAKE TURNER'S CONTRACT DISAPPEAR
2 MAKE MO'S CONTRACT DISAPPEAR
3 MAKE MEYERS CONTRACT DISAPPEAR*

*those wishes are not ordered

I don't think Vonleh will cost too much. I suspect we won't re-sign Davis, and will pay Vonleh a couple mil more than we're paying Davis. If Vonleh gets anything north of $12M then I agree we'll let him walk - but I'm thinking we'll give him around $9M.

Bottom line is, we're going to be spending WAY too much money on a mediocre roster, but we can't afford to let talent walk. Not signing Nurk/Vonleh/Pat doesn't improve our financial situation any. It might reduce the tax bill, but it doesn't get us to a point where we can sign free agents (as if we can sign free agents - ha!). And that's 3 rotations players we'd have to somehow replace with MLE-or-less players. That's a real good way to alienate Dame and CJ. So, with the richest owner in sports, we CAN afford to pay taxes, but we CAN'T afford to let talent walk.

Long story short: in for a penny, in for a pound.
