This data is from Jan 24, but I posted it then and don't have time to update it now, but . . .

Omg I knew they were bad but damn this bad? Worse than Harden huh?

So tell me why do we like the dame and Cj pairing moving forward?

I will say this again. You can win with both. The talent around them outside Nurkic isn't much. Surround them with talent. Get some defensive minded players in there.

How dare he. CJ and his bottom 5 defensive rating for a shooting guard is a great defender.

I took one trick pony as offense only. Like Dame, he has zero interest in playing defense.

But it's not blowing rose dust up the fans asses, so he sucks, or has an agenda. CJ couldn't actually suck as a defender....right?

No, it's just that when some talking head with a grudge says the exact same thing MANY posters here have need saying for the last two years, it hardly qualifies as news. Why is he flogging this dead horse now with the Blazers winning 5 of their last 6? Is it possible he actually does have an agenda and is butt hurt about being fired from Talking Ball? Otherwise, why in the middle of Nurkmania, with the whole team playing better does he feel it necessary to shit on everyone else's enjoyment of the team.

Oh wait, I forgot who I was talking to. Never mind.

Great. Another thread about this argument.

Couldn't you just bump an old thread? I mean just the other day you bumped a random game thread from 2 years ago.

Why do I have the sneaking suspicion that all our players, not just the 2 guards, would suddenly look better at defense if Stotts were replaced with a conventional NBA coach.

I wonder, though... If then we get mad when we lose games because we dont then have enough scoring? If 3 players are all doing the scoring.... Its all dependent on who moves out... Its a theory, though.

Or might you just be afraid to let one of them go?

These sorts of statements are really empty without naming specific options.

Or might you just be afraid to let one of them go?
No I am not afraid of it. I just think it can work out. Dame and CJ are so close and have a chemistry and they are some of the best offensive players in the game. Defense is bad, I get that but we succeeded with them last season when everybody was playing better. This season guys kinda stopped playing as good. Plus you gotta think it's already in the organizations minds that this is the two they want going forward. I could see them exploring trading CJ after next season if whatever they have planned doesn't work out. Look how much Nurkic alone has helped the team. Switch out some other guys too, lets see what else we can get going

Using defensive rating to compare individual players and their defensive worth seems pretty foolish to me. I love stats, and the more the merrier, IMO. It all, along with the eye test, helps. They help. But then people look at a simple stat like defensive rating and go oh, look, they're the worst, or they're better than X, worse than X. Pau Gasol is #8 currently in DRTG. 8th! Show of hands of who thinks Pau Gasol is a top 8 defender in the league currently? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Last year LaMarcus Aldridge was #7 in DRTG. Somehow he turned into a top 10 defender just by leaving Portland? Even better was Jared SUllinger last year being #10. DRTG said that Aldridge and Sullinger were better defenders than Draymond Green.

Defensive rating certainly has a team
Element to it, but do you really think Aminu, Harkless, Nurkic and Vinleh are dragging Dame and CJ down?

I can't find it easily, but would love to see Dame and CJs stats on defending the three compared to league average. Can't hide from that one. I guess you can blame Stotts if you really must.

It's not just one defensive metric, it seems to be just about every defensive metric, rating or analysis out there. Dame and CJ are both quite good offensively but I don't think that with both of them as bad at defense as they are and being the first line of _efense, that the team can be contenders. I also believe that CJ will have enough value that you can get someone who might not be quite as good on offense but much better on defense that can also help cover for Dame like Matthews did.

You can cover for one but it's tough to cover for both. I like them both.....just like Warrior fans like Curry/Ellis. They were PISSED when Ellis was traded. That worked out fairly well. The history of the NBA is not replete with successful franchises with 2 offensive minded, non-defensive, undersized scoring guards that don't pass a lot between the two of them except mostly to each other.

Didn't the warriors already have klay when they traded monta? Do we have a Klay?

^^^ @Natebishop3 ....they did have Klay but he wasn't playing much because of Ellis. Thompson wasn't as good of an offensively well-rounded player as Ellis and not nearly the passer but was much better at defense and now could start. Bogut added a lot of defense with some scoring and a little passing.

CJ is the one player who could get someone that could fill multiple needs instead of just one. Crabbe doesn't play defense as well as Thompson but shoot is about as well with much less volume. Neither is much of a passer or scorer outside of perimeter shooting but obviously Thompson is at a much higher level of over all production. Not saying Crabbe is the answer but he would score, play at least a little more defense and then you would add in what you got from a CJ trade which would be a very good piece.

Don't forget the 6'2" Vinnie Johnson "The Microwave". He was the third guard in that 3-guard rotation. Without Vinnie (and hey - what do you know? - some terrible officiating against Portland), Detroit likely does not win the Finals against Portland.
Are you really bitching about the officiating from almost 30 years ago?

Gonna go after the other posters who agree with him, or just me? I do love your dissertations

So, 100 words now qualifies as a dissertation? Good to know, time to go back to school and get multiple PhDs.

And I love your victim act. That never gets old. Never.

Where did I even say I disagree with Ropp?

I just find the timing of his rant disingenuous and self-serving. It's not like it's some earth shattering revelation. Many others here and elsewhere in the media have been saying the same thing for the past two seasons. So why does Ropp act like this is some big hot newsflash at this particular point in time? We just added a rim protecting big man that has helped improve our team defense. He isn't even fully integrated into the team yet, but they have won 5 of their last 6 games. Nurkic had been a difference maker. Why not give it the rest of the regular season to see how well having a paint clogging big man helps make up for Dame and C.J.'s defensive inadequacies before beating this same old dead horse?

Oh right, Ropp got fired and now has a personal vendetta against the team. Instead of talking about how Jusuf Nurkic is helping the team improve their defense and how he can do even more as he becomes more integrated into the teams offensive and defensive schemes, he trots out this same tired sentiment that's already been discussed ad nauseum.

That was awesome.

God forbid someone has a different time table than you.

People notice things at different times. How are all those Meyers supporters doing? Or assclown mcscribbles supporters? Some people dont want to see the truth. Or maybe, just maybe Ropp doesn't read the forum to know when it's ok by you for him to have an opinion.

Oh dear lord, I really want to know who assclown mcscribbles is.

I would suppose, perhaps incorrectly, being topical and current would be an important part of being an on air sports talk radio personality. Perhaps not. Or, maybe that's why Ropp lost his job on Talking Ball. If you aren't current and relevant, what do you bring to the party?

Nate McMillan.

I called him Assclown early cause I saw he was a shitty coach. I got killed by the fanboys for it. Then several years later others caught on and someone called him McScribbles. It grew from there

There a ton of people outside this forum who love the Blazers. They, along with some here that think the players can do no wrong. Ropp brought it up on the radio. Good for him. Those people need to hear it.

Why do you assume they can't think for themselves? Why do they need Ropp to point out the obvious? You seem to have a very low opinion of your fellow "fans".

Ropp got fired from Talking Ball because he brought absolutely nothing to that program. No insights, no talking points, nothing. He was a complete waste of space.

Then he whined about it and said he was fired because he was critical of the team. Yet, miraculously, Dwight Jaynes, who has made a career out of criticizing the Blazers still has a job on Talking Ball.

And now, because Ropp rehashes the same tired story that's been widely circulating for the past two seasons, he's suddenly your hero. Go figure...

I think with Nurk now becoming a very good piece we did not previously have increases the possibility of trading CJ for a "different piece" as we have become a better team with Nurk. With Nurk onboard we now have to start looking at the imbalances more seriously that two very good scoring/no defense guards cause, IMO if we could move CJ for other parts that would fit our team with Nurk that could easily make us better. I like both Dame and CJ, however we have to ask ourselves are they the best fit on a team that we want to see contend or at least be a consistent 2nd rd team and win 50 games or more for a few seasons at least?

That he doesn't believe the Blazers can win with both C.J and Lillard. He said C.J is basically a one trick pony and really only cares about his offense. Also said that Neil's crazy if he doesn't trade CJ for a better defensive two way SG.

Bullshit. We can't win with two of the best scoring guards in the league? Give me a break. Our worst lineup is when we play just one of them alongside Crabbe whose a good defender. Our problem is not with having CJ and Dame, our weaknesses are in other areas of the roster.
I've said it many times, Napier should play more, that's the key for the season. He plays more and we win but it's still not enough. Every time we play just one of Dame, CJ, Napier we struggle. If we play two of them throughout the game we'd be that much better

I'm not bitching. With today's reviews, though, the Danny Young three-pointer counts.

Vinnie killed us, though. We were ahead in pretty much every game until Vinnie took over.

Crabbe is not a good defender. He is long and pokes the ball loose at times, but he is really bad on PnR coverage like Dame and CJ.

I was gonna say this. Crabbe is NOT a good defender.
And his dumb fouls drive me crazy at times

Ok, it's debatable if Crabbe is a good defender but he's not known as a liability the way Dame and CJ supposedly are.
And my point was different. I think we should not only play Dame and CJ together, I think every time either of them sit Napier should play, meaning we play two smaller guards the entire game (Dame and CJ; Dame and Napier; CJ and Napier).
I don't know how to find advanced stats but I would be surprised if Crabbe is not much more efficient (especially in plus-minus rating) as a SF than he is as a SG. My idea is that Crabbe should only play SF and that he should play, I like Crabbe, but I want the guard rotation to only be Dame, CJ, Napier the entire game. I think having two such guards is our strength, not our weakness
