You guys think there's anyway of getting O'Neal without giving up RJ?

Sure- trade Carter instead.

Playing for the Nets would put Jermaine in the greatest possible position for him to succeed. Kidd and Carter would do wonders for him. He would get more easy looks than he's ever gotten before and his athleticism and ability to finish around the rim would open things up for them too. Carter wouldn't be constantly triple teamed and teams wouldn't be able to clog the middle like they've done in the past.

This is the only part of that excellent post with which I disagree.

JON would not draw defenders into the paint to "clog the middle" any more than RJ would.

In fact, he's an offensive downgrade. He'll shoot a lower percentage and make fewer foul shots than RJ if both players are 100%.

(Now, Pau Gasol, a REAL threat in the paint, would be an upgrade over RJ in every way.)

you're probably right, but there's just something about the term "all-star big man" that gets everyone worked up..

and i'd rather have gasol, too, but beggars can't be choosers.

What I don't understand is why the people who say O'Neal will limit Kidd's effectiveness were so adamant about wanting Garnett, the epitome of an empty numbers player, in a Nets uniform for a similar package. O'Neal's offensive repertoire is practically identical to Garnett's, the only difference being that KG is a far superior shooter. Hell, JO has more power and back to the basket moves to his game than Garnett does. Granted I'm not saying that JO is better than KG, since there is absolutely nothing on the court he does better other than the occasional drop step or sweeping hook, but since both players have similar offensive skill sets, wouldn't KG also limit Kidd's effectiveness? KG has absolutely no inside game whatsoever. He's a fadeaway jump shooter much like O'Neal and it's the reason why he's never been a dominant scorer able to shoulder the load of a contender. I believe it was Scottie Pippen who suggested that perhaps KG should move to shooting guard and he's right. Garnett's lack of a back to the basket game is what separates him from Duncan, unarguably the best power forward in the league and in history. It's why his teams have never won and is why he'll never even come close to approaching Duncan's level. Garnett is a second fiddle type player, however; he will thrive now that he has an alpha dog on his team in Pierce and another capable scorer in Allen. That's besides the point though. The point is that arguing that JO will slow the team down while so vehemently lobbying to acquire Garnett with a package based around the same players is absurd. It's certainly possible that the team will get worse if it trades for JO, though I highly doubt it, but to do nothing and keep the same team is ridiculous. At best we are a middle of the pack playoff team that gets bounced in round 2, and even getting that far with this group will be extremely difficult.

Sorry, just had to rant. I'm sick of how wildly over-rated KG is.

My impression's that KG is a far fiercer competitor with better court awareness and a higher bbiq- which I suppose is why you say he'd make a decent sg. At this point, despite being low man on the elite pf totem pole, I'd be really happy to have JO on the team- just wouldn't want to give up RJ or Krstic to make it happen.

Pacers are probably going to wait on Bynum and if no Bynum, I think the Nets will be able to get O'Neal, if they still want him in Feb.
